The Midwest Medieval History Conference is the oldest regional association devoted to medieval studies. For forty-seven years it has served as a forum for the discussion and presentation of new directions in historical research as well as a place of warm collegiality. Held on the campus of Denison University, in Granville, Ohio, the conference will commence with graduate student papers. Saturday’s meeting will feature the plenary address, as well as several sessions of presentations on a range of topics. At the end of the day there will be a banquet and the President’s Reception.
This year’s plenary speaker is Daniel Lord Smail (Harvard University).A specialist in social and cultural history, Professor Smail has published on such topics as law, violence, understandings of space, and most recently deep history. Among his books are Imaginary Cartographies: Possession and Identity in Late Medieval Marseille (1999), The Consumption of Justice: Emotions, Publicity, and Legal Culture in Marseille,1264-1423 (2003), and On Deep History and the Brain (2008).
Denison University is a highly selective, private, residential liberal arts college located in Granville, Ohio, approximately 30 miles east of Columbus. Founded in 1831, Denison enrolls just over 2,000 undergraduates, from almost all fifty states and more than forty countries. The college is situated atop a hill overlooking Granville, a quaint, New England-like village.
This conference is sponsored by the Denison University Provost’s Office
and Denison’s Department of History.
Blocks of rooms have been reserved at the Buxton Inn in Granville (313 E. Broadway, 740-587-0001), a short walk from campus; the Porch House (241 E. Maple, 740-587-1995), a small B&B in Granville, a short walk from campus; and the Courtyard Marriott in Newark (500 Highland Blvd., 740-344-1800), several miles from campus.
