CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish May 25, 2014 Sixth Sunday of Easter “To renew all things in Christ” 50 Years of Faith Dear Friends, Love. It’s a difficult thing to write about. In many ways, it is more adequately expressed through poetry, songs, or through those little acts that people do to show their love. There is a certain elusive quality to love that prevents us from fully being able to capture its essence and communicate it satisfactorily to one another. Its forms of expression are manifold. And yet, for Christians, it is expressed in its totality in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Still, we are forever plumbing the depths of that mystery. Throughout the centuries, innumerable people have written about love or composed music about love to attempt to convey its nature. Many have done so in very powerful ways. I would venture to say that the vast majority of music that has ever been composed has revolved around the topic. Even today’s song lyrics predominately deal with love, or the loss of it. Yet, there is something about love that is missing in most of today’s music and literature. Most of it deals with the more fleshly or physical aspects of love. It seems that the contemporary arts treat love from a perspective of physical attraction and pleasure, whereas a good portion of the classic poems and lyrics comprise the more sublime and transcendent qualities of love. What has happened? Have we forgotten what love really is? Jesus instructs us, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” These words point to what we have lost regarding our understanding of love. There seems to be something about sacrifice that is implied here. Keeping commandments is not easy. It involves constraining oneself and one’s passions by observing one set of principles over another. This is sacrifice. Sacrifice involves an act of the will by which we choose one thing and let go of something else. Isn’t that what Jesus did on the cross? Jesus could have easily avoided the cross. But his love for us moved him to choose our good over his own well-being. He let go of one thing for the sake of something else. In doing so, Jesus showed us that perfect love is not so much a matter of the physical as the spiritual. It is associated with something more transcendent; a choice and a commitment. As I said, many of contemporary arts focus on gratification. From this perspective, love is demeaned to mere sensual pleasure, disregarding the more noble and sublime character of love. With the inundation of this kind of portrayal all around us, we translate this into every aspect of our lives. It is no wonder that marriages fail, or families are torn apart. People have forgotten that love is not what I can get out of it, but what others receive from it. It is about the choice to sacrifice one thing for another. One of the struggles we have these days is that we want to do it all. We are so engaged in trying to satisfy our physical needs that we forget the need for sacrifice. We want more money so that we can possess more things. We want to be liked, so we get involved in more activities. To make more money, we work harder and we demand more of ourselves. Families are stretched to the limits and yet they crave more of everything. Anything spectacular becomes

Dear Friends, Love. It’s a difficult thing to write about. In many ways, it is more adequately expressed through poetry,

songs, or through those little acts that people do to show their love.

To make more money, we work harder and we demand more of ourselves. a kind of religion. What gets sacrificed is the truly religious and spiritual part of our lives, which become placed at the bottom of the list. It’s no wonder we are lost and without meaning. It’s no wonder we crave love, because we have lost the sense of the sublime nature of love. Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” He also says, “Remain in my love.” Maybe it is time for us to re-prioritize our lives. Endless activity is not the answer. We need to start being more deliberate about our choices. We need to learn of the sacrifice required in order to keep the commandments. We need to see love more in terms of its transcendent qualities. To do that, all we have to do is look at Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Perhaps we can return to true love which is founded in Jesus Christ.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONSchool NewsBy Principal Bryan Krnavek

This past week was our last full week of school. It was a memorable one that was filled with end-of-school organization parties, field trips for our 1st, 2nd and 6th graders, a PTO meeting, a SAC meeting, a field day, a school picnic and a volleyball game between the faculty and the sixth graders.

One of the parties was for members of our Student Council that consist of 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. I have come to learn that they are one of the best elementary student councils in town. They not only do things for the school, but also for the community. Most of the service projects come from ideas generated by the Student Council members who organize and carry out the ideas. Because of their efforts, we have had clothing drives, tennis shoe drives, food drives, and we collected canned goods for the various homeless shelters. The sponsors are our 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Stovall and 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Urbis. These ladies do a fantastic job of teaching leadership skills and instilling a spirit of service in our students. Thank you, ladies!

The field day and school picnic on Friday, and the results of the volleyball game, will have to be reported in next week’s bulletin since this column is written before then. It will be my last school report until we return to school in August.

This coming week will be a short one for us. We will return after Memorial Day to end the school year with our “Move-up Day” on Tuesday, Safety Patrol party and last Manner of the Lunch on Wednesday and graduations and awards ceremonies on Thursday and Friday. After that, the teachers will close up their classrooms and begin a long-awaited summer vacation.

One of our activities this week will be a “Move-Up Day” where students in K-3 through 5th grade are given the opportunity to visit their next year’s teacher and classroom. The students are always excited and eager to learn what is in store for them in August when they return to school. The 6th graders will “move-down” to K-3 and visit with the teacher, Mrs. Ramos, and aide, Ms. Terry. Some of these students have been at St. Pius since K-3.

We will also have our final Manner of the Month lunch catered by Jason’s Deli on Wednesday. Thanks to parishioners Bob and Sue Becquet, our children get rewarded for using good manners. They have sponsored this program for many years now. Thanks again, Bob and Sue!

Have a blessed week!

Catechesis of the Good ShepherdThank you for your Wonderful response to working with us

to bring the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to the CCD children. It can be a wonderful experience for the children and thanks to you, our parish family, it is going to happen. Blessings to all who volunteered to help in any way.
