The Liturgy of the Palms

Book of Alternative services p. 297

Officiant: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

People: Hosanna in the highest.

Officiant: Dear friends in Christ, during Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord’s paschal mystery. On this day our Lord Jesus Christentered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph.

The people welcomed him with palms and shouts of praise, but the path before him led to self-giving, suffering, and death.

Today we greet him as our King, although we know his crown is thorns and his throne a cross

Page 4: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

Officiant: We follow him this week from the glory of the palmsto the glory of the resurrectionby way of the dark road of suffering and death.United with him in his suffering on the cross, may we share his resurrection and new life.

Let us pray.

Assist us mercifully with your help, Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy into the celebration of those mighty acts whereby you give us life and immortality; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

People: Amen.

Deacon: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew

People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them,‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.” And he will send them immediately.’This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying,

‘Tell the daughter of Zion,Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’

Page 6: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them;they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,

‘Hosanna to the Son of David!Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Hosanna in the highest heaven!’When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, ‘Who is this?’ The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.’

Deacon: The Gospel of Christ.

People : Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Page 7: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

Officiant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Officiant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right to praise you, almighty God,for the acts of love by which you have redeemed usthrough your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. The Hebrews acclaimed Jesus as Messiah and King, with palm branches in their hands, crying,Hosanna in the highest.May we also, carrying these emblems, go forth to meet Christ and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life;who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.

People: Amen.

The Readings

Reader: A Reading from the Book of Philippians

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

who, though he was in the form of God,

did not regard equality with God

as something to be exploited,

but emptied himself,

taking the form of a slave,

being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form,

he humbled himself

and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross.

Page 11: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

Therefore God also highly exalted him

and gave him the name

that is above every name,

so that at the name of Jesus

every knee should bend,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.Philippians 2:5-11

Reader: The word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

A moment of silence is observed

Homily The Rev. Dr. Holly Ratcliffe

Page 23: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

The Apostles’ Creed Book of Alternative services p.53

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and

born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Leader: Gracious God, as we look back on our pilgrimage

through Lent this day, we remember your own journey,

how you set your face firmly towards Jerusalem,

with clarity of purpose and purity of intention,

knowing what lay ahead, but never turning aside.

We remember how you rode into your city in triumph,

enjoying shouts of “Hosanna,” living fully in that moment of delight,

and accepting the crowds’ praise. We thank you that you went into the heart of our evil, and pain,

along a way that was both terrible and wonderful,

as your kingship became your brokenness,

and your dying became love's triumph.

Set the mind of the Church on your Kingdom of peace and joy.

Prayers for the church are offered

Page 26: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

Leader: May your church remain faithful

as it celebrates the wonder and the glory

of the mystery of your love and your life, given for us.

Lord, in your mercy:

All: Hear our prayer.

Leader: Let your word speak through the prophets

to the nations of this world,

that those who lead and hold authority in the world

may be instruments of life and healing,

banishing violence and injustice from the face of the eart

Prayers for the world are offered

Leader: May all the nations be gathered together into your kingdom.

Lord, in your mercy:

All: Hear our prayer.

Page 27: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

Leader: We pray for those who are working at this time

to care for and protect others, especially for. . .

We pray for the sick and suffering, especially . . .

Leader: I invite your own prayers for the sick and the suffering,

spoken aloud or offered in the sanctity of silence.

Please offer your prayers, as the Spirit moves you

Leader: Comfort all who suffer, and

heal the wounds inflicted by the chances and changes of life.

Lord, in your mercy:

All: Hear our prayer.

Page 28: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

Leader: Holy God, your blessed Son Jesus Christ

went about doing good, and healing all manner of sickness

and disease among the people.

We pray that you would continue his gracious work

among us: cheer, heal, and sanctify the sick;

grant to the physicians, surgeons, and nurses

wisdom and skill, sympathy and patience; and

send down your blessing upon all who work

to prevent suffering and to forward your purposes of love;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Page 29: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

Collect: Remember, Lord, your people bowed before you,

and those who are absent

through age, sickness, or any other cause.

Care for the infants, guide the young, support the aged,

inspire the faint-hearted,

and bring the wandering to your fold.

Journey with the travellers, encourage the oppressed,

defend the widows, deliver the captives, heal the sick.

Strengthen all who are in tribulation, necessity, or distress.

Remember for good those who love us,

and those who hate us, and those who have asked us,

unworthy as we are, to pray for them.

Remember especially, Lord, those whom we have forgotten.

For you are the helper of the helpless, the saviour of the lost,

the refuge of the wanderer, the healer of the sick.

You know the need of all and have heard each prayer:

save us in your merciful loving- kindness and eternal love;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Page 30: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

Leader: Enlighten those who walk in the shadow of death

and welcome them into your eternal Jerusalem with rejoicing.

The names of those who have died are offered

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord.

All: And let light perpetual shine upon them.

Leader: May they rest in peace and rise in Christ’s glory. Bless and comfort their loved ones

and give us faith in your promise of eternal life.

Lord, in your mercy:

All: Hear our prayer.

Leader: Gracious God, you have prepared a place for us

in your kingdom.

Accept these prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

One God, world without end.

All: Amen.

Page 31: Welcome to St. George’s Morning Prayer Service!

Officiant: As our Saviour Christ has taught us, let us pray:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the Kingdom,

the Power, and the Glory,

now and forever,

Amen.
