Please Pray For Our Sick

Maurice Colbert Carl Foerstner

Maureen Melley Peter Sheehan Walter Vossel Sheila Ryan Bridget Kleiderer

Our Scripture readings begin to focus on the Holy Spirit. I think the Holy Spirit is the neglected Person of the Trinity. We think about the Spirit on Pentecost Sunday or at the time of the Sacrament of Confirmation, and that is about it. But the Spirit is important in our spiritual lives for a number of reasons. In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls the Spirit the Advocate, meaning the Helper. The Spirit helps us to live our Christian lives. How? Jesus calls the Advocate ‘the Spirit of truth’ who remains with us. We need to know the truth, the truth about ourselves, the truth about how to live well, the truth about what is right and wrong. The Spirit helps us to know the truth. This is quite a statement. We might think about this in terms of what our society and culture tell us about the truth, it is often far different than what we hear from our Christian faith. The Spirit also accompanies us in our lives, is with us as we live our lives. “I will not leave you orphans.” The Spirit walks with us and we can turn to Him in our need. We turn to the Spirit in our need when we pray to the Spirit for insight and guidance when we are not sure what to do. It is important to know where we can go when we are confused or need help; the Spirit is the Person standing with us as a help as we live our Christian lives. We might think about how we can make the Holy Spirit a more active part in our Christian lives. Easter Blessings, Fr. Sheridan

Speaking of Liturgy

Deep Care for Others When Jesus says to keep his commandments as a sign of our love for Him, He is not only speaking about simple laws or commands. He is saying live as He lived. We are to proclaim the living Christ by the way we heal the hurt in others. To bring a caring touch to those who are ailing in any way and strengthen those who are weak or paralyzed by fear, doubt or selfishness. We are to encourage those weighed down with too much stress, work or indecision.

We keep his commandments by being gentle and reverent toward others, having a clear conscience and doing good in the world.

From the Loft Heard at the onset of Communion at the 11:30am Mass is an excerpt from François Couperin’s (b.1668-1733) setting of the Magnificat. A translation of the excerpt is:

The text of the Magnificat, also known as the Canticle of Mary, is one of the earliest Christian hymns and perhaps the earliest Marian hymn. The following choral piece heard is I Will Sing of Thy Mercies from the St. Paul Oratorio by Felix Mendels-

sohn (b.1809-1847), arranged by Carlton Young.

Magníficat ánima mea Dóminum. Et exultávit spíritus meus: in Deo salutári meo.

My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God, my Savior.

SFX Blood Drive Thank You!

The Blood Drive on Mother’s Day weekend was a great success thanks to over 40 parishioners and friends. We surpassed the

LifeSource goal of 35 pints and reached 50 pints. The bone marrow registry gained 2 new supporters as well. The average

blood drive generates 30 to 35 pints. A very special thanks to all who came to the Xavier Room and donated. Everyone in-

volved clearly shared their time, talents and treasures. Parish vitality is alive and well at St. Francis Xavier. We look forward to

hosting the 3rd annual drive in March 2018.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The St. Francis Xavier Church Blood Drive was able to achieve 50 on a goal of 35!! You did it, WOW!!

Thank you for hosting your drives with us and for saving lives right here in our community. You know that volunteer blood donations provide a safe and adequate blood supply for our community. Please extend our gratitude to everyone who gave unselfishly of themselves to help others. Their generosity will help Chicagoland area friends, family and neighbors in need, including cancer pa-tients, critically ill newborns, burn survivors, accident victims, transplant patients and many, many more who have illnesses re-quiring treatment with blood products.

As always, on behalf of LifeSource and the patients, who are the ultimate beneficiaries of your generosity and efforts, thank you for saving lives through your Blood Drive.

Book: "The Nest" by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney When: June 20, 2017 at 9:30 A.M. Where: Mallinckrodt Community Center Reviewer: Nancy McGowan Hostesses: Judi Olk and Nancy Geary Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs' joint trust fund, "The Nest," which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their de-ceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest's value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems. WORD: Holy Listening Each week we gather to relax and listen to a short passage from scripture, reflect on God’s word, respond in prayer, and rest in God’s presence. Important information regarding communion visits and pastoral care of the sick for the homebound and hospitalized. Please read carefully.

Your spiritual needs are very important to the staff at St. Francis. To insure that you received the desired spiritual care if you are hospitalized or homebound with illness, please assist us by providing us with the following.

Hospital: If you would like anointing prior to a scheduled surgery, please call the parish office to schedule an anointing with a priest. You may also receive anointing at the hospital when there is an emergency. When you are admitted to the hospital it is critical that you or a loved one identifies your religious affiliation, your parish name and your desire for pastoral care and communion visits. The patient may also call the Ministry of Care line to request communion at the hospital. A minister of care will make sure the hospital is informed of this request. Homebound: Trained ministers of Care are available to bring communion to our parish sick and homebound. Ministers also visit local assisted living and nursing care homes. To schedule a visit, please call the Ministry of Care line at: 847 256-2273 press 0 and a Minister of Care will return your call.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is dedicated to helping the poor and others who have come upon difficult times. As Vincentians, we serve those in need through one-on-one counseling, as well as providing financial and other help to those who have fallen on hard times. If you or someone you know wishes to meet with us, please contact the parish office at 847-256-4250 and ask for extension 44 and leave a short message. We will respond as soon as possible. All inquiries will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

The St. Francis Xavier Peace & Justice Ministry works to link faith to action by providing information & resources on the social issues of our time. Activities include small faith sharing groups, speakers and field trips. There is also a monthly newsletter and calendar of local events.
