Moulton Mill - Moulton
w w w . v i s i t s p a l d i n g . c o . u k
Stretching across South Lincolnshire and NorthCambridgeshire, the Fens were originally an expanse ofswampland.
The Romans first attempted to drain the area by building seawalls and waterways, such as the Car Dyke, but this was largely unsuccessful. Charles I granted the 4th Earl of Bedfordthe right to drain the fens in 1630 but there was fierce opposition from settlers.
Well known for being isolated, resentful of outsiders and independent of aristocracy, fens people originally lived off theland by fishing, peat cutting, sedge and reed harvesting andextracting salt from the marsh, all of which now became underthreat.

DRAINING THE FENS
Cornelius Vermuyden was commissioned by the Earl of Bedford to drain the fens but neither had anticipated the effect this workwould have on the peat soils. Once drained the soil dried out, thepeat sank very quickly and the level of the land fell below that ofthe waterways, thus preventing the water from draining away further. It was not until windmills were introduced to pump waterfrom the fields in to the waterways that the situation improved.
These windmills were gradually succeeded by more efficientsteam powered pumps, which provided a permanent solution to the flooding.
THE FLOWER INDUSTRY
Draining the fens has produced two different types of arable land:silt and peat. This combination has made the area well known forbeing fertile, with each area suitable for growing particular crops. The land around Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, is ideal for producingsoft fruits and apples. Boston grows cabbage, cauliflower andsprouts.
Spalding became famous for producing flower bulbs. The flowerindustry in Spalding began in 1880 when a small number of entrepreneurs began experimenting with a new crop - flower bulbsfor sale as cut flowers and dried bulbs. By 1900 approximately500 acres of bulbs were planted in the Spalding area.
Now around 400 miles of rivers and artificial waterways, controlled by pumps, maintain the fine balance between floodingand fertility, thus keeping the Fens in their current state of firstclass agricultural land.
Set in the heart of the Fens, South Holland is the ideal place toexplore their rich and varied history. Why not follow the course of this history through a varied range of attractions, easily accessible from Spalding, many of which are outlined overleaf.

One of England's largest parishes, the area has several finechurches. The Parish Church of All Saints, largely built in the14th Century, has a particularly fine turreted north porch whichis believed to have been salvaged from the nearby castle ofThomas de Moulton when it became a ruin. The St. MaryMagdalene Church in nearby Gedney is also well worth seeing.

Holbeach is fortunate in having the attractive ten acre Carter'sPark close to the centre of town. It combines lawns, shrubberies, flower beds and children's playground with areas for sporting pursuits.

The area around Sutton Bridge was once marshland, graduallyreclaimed from the sea from the 16th Century onwards but evenby the 19th Century there was nothing more than a few cottages. The River Nene was much wider than at present, with no bridge, so it had to be crossed at low tide with greatcare and a guide.
As the land was reclaimed, a bridge was built to span the Nene. The current swing bridge is the third one (built in 1897) originally built to cater for road traffic on one side and rail on theother. After 1965 when the railway was closed, the bridge converted to purely road use.
Whilst farming and food processing are the main industries,1987 saw the opening of Port Sutton Bridge which is a thrivingmodern 62 acre dry cargo port and warehouse facility and in1999 the gas fired Sutton Bridge Power Station was opened, both offering good employment opportunities.
Sir Peter Scott, the famous naturalist, spent many years living in the East Lighthouse painting the geese and other wildlifethere and set up a small nature reserve for wildfowl. The Sir PeterScott Walk follows the coastline of The Wash from the EastLighthouse to King's Lynn in Norfolk where hardy walkers canenjoy the fantastic scenery and search for the varied wildlife thatlive here.
The Cross Keys Bridge is a unique historic feature of the town, theamazing inner workings of which can be experienced onLincolnshire Heritage Days.
Plans are evolving to build a new Community Centre and Libraryto enhance the growing town, which already boasts several high quality independent shops selling antiques, furniture and ladieswear.

The churches extend from Donington in the north of the District, with the church of St Mary and the Holy Rood. Here you canfind memorials to local lad, the19th century explorer MatthewFlinders, famous for surveying much of the Australian coast. Tothe south is the church of St Mary in Tydd St Mary’s, close tothe Cambridgeshire border.
In Anglo Saxon times the areas of dry land that rose above thefen attracted the attention of religious communities. Thisexplains why the oldest churches are situated in a ring aroundthe Wash, roughly in a line that follows the A151 and A17.These include St Mary’s, Weston with its colourful kneelers, AllSaints, Moulton, famous for its Adam and Eve font and StMary’s, Whaplode where there is a monument to the local family of magnates, the Irby’s. From here you can continue tothe market town of Holbeach where the entrance porch to AllSaints church resembles a castle and then on to Fleet, wherethe church of St Mary Magdalene has an attractive lych gateand, unusually, a detached steeple. Visible from the A17 is ‘TheCathedral of the Fens’ as Gedney’s St Mary Magdalene churchhas been called. This imposing building is noted for its clerestory of 12 closely spaced windows. At Long Sutton youwill find the unusual lead spire of St Mary’s. This is said to bethe oldest of its kind in England.
Away from The Wash are several more beautiful Medievalchurches. Those of particular interest include St Guthlac’s atCrowland. This is part of the former abbey, founded by StGuthlac who, in 699AD, sought a life of solitude and contemplation. This he found in Crowland.
Other noteworthy churches include St Laurence in Surfleetwhich until recently had the lightest peal of 12 bells in the world. This church is recognisable by its tower which leans 6 feet outof perpendicular. St Margaret’s stands some distance north ofthe village of Quadring. Local legend has it that the village tookit upon itself to move away from the church to escape the BlackDeath.
The church at Sutton St James is yet another with a separate tower. It is described as ‘the church with no nave’.Other Medieval churches worth visiting are St Mary’s atPinchbeck, St Peter and Paul’s in Gosberton, St Mary’s in Cowbit, the brick built church of St Nicholas inLutton and the church of the Holy Trinity in Gedney Hill.
Spalding town centre boasts the Parish Church of St Mary and St Nicolas which overlooks the River Welland. This magnificent church is open daily.

The South Holland area boasts many of these impressiveplaces of worship, several of which are given a mention inSimon Jenkins’ “England’s Thousand Best Churches”. These fine churches were built in the perpendicular style on the wealth of the wool trade. It could be said that influential land owners were buying a place in Heaven!

Lighthouse - Sir Peter Scott Walk - Sutton Bridge
w w w . v i s i t s p a l d i n g . c o . u k
Early on a crisp Autumn morning standing on the sea wall andwatching the wading birds at the water line feeding and swarmingin huge flocks, or a hot spring day watching the Marsh Harriersfeeding young, hunting on the marsh and the fantastic flying display as the male passes food to the female in mid air. Access to the sea wall is simple at Sutton Bridge and severalother places too (see map) as most of the Western Shore is inSouth Holland.
Visit the Peter Scott Lighthouse at Sutton Bridge near the mouthof the River Nene, where he started his first captive collection ofducks and geese, and where he began painting his famouswildlife pictures. The Scott Walk starts there and follows thisunique piece of coast over the border to Kings Lynn in Norfolk.
Not surprisingly there are several nature reserves in the area, onthe banks of the River Welland is the Moulton Marsh NatureReserve, owned and run by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, one ofseveral in the immediate area. This is a place of tranquil beautyand peace and preserves some rare habitats. From the car parkenter the reserve and walk the woodland path, off to the right asyou pass through the gate. Here is an opportunity to watch andlisten to the wildlife, emerge above the fresh water and salinelagoons either side of the sea defences, both teaming withwildlife. Visitors are welcome but do remember that thesereserves were created to provide safe haven for the wildlife andmust be respected as such.
Spalding has its own safe haven at the Vernatt’s Local NatureReserve. Sandwiched between the Spalding Cemetery and theVernatt’s Drain, the waterway that surrounds the northern edge ofthe town, this miniature green lung is a mosaic of habitats with a surprising range of plants and animals living there. The reserve isthe home of kingfisher, water vole, sparrow hawk, woodpecker aswell as many seasonal song birds and over 250 species of plant, trees and shrubs.
There are five main habitats including a woodland walk, meadow, pool and marsh. Visit the web site at www.sholland.gov.uk/environment/vernatts follow the ‘Images’ and the ‘Reserve indetail’ links and see what has been seen on the reserve and thework in progress to keep this pocket wilderness just that. Thereis also a habitats map and directions on how to find the reserve.
There are many more wildlife sites in South Holland and althoughsome of them are not open to the public they make up the richpattern of biodiversity in this busy agricultural landscape. Thepressures of development are constantly threatening to destroysome of the rarest habitats and there is a commitment to conserving as much of the natural landscapes of this unique fenland area as possible.
LINCOLNSHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST:www.lincstrust.org.uk.
South Holland is rich in wildlife, sitting as it does in the hinterlandof the Wash estuary system. The Wash is the largest area of saltmarsh and mudflats in the UK and is a haven for over 300,000migrating wading birds and birds of prey. The Wash is among themost protected areas in Europe, a European Marine Site,National Nature Reserve and an area of Outstanding NaturalBeauty. The proximity of South Holland to this amazing area ofcoastland means that the whole area is internationally importantfor many species of birds and other wildlife.
"I think that if one were to live in this wide and open country ofgreat fields and great seascapes, where the horizons are wide asthe sea itself, where the wind sweeps and roars, where thesnows come straight from the Arctic, and the geese last saw landbeneath the Midnight Sun, one might walk like a hero, live like afighting cock, and die at a hundred."
