• We are going to investigate the city of Atlanta, Georgia today.

• Georgia is located in the Southeastern region of the United States, and Atlanta is the state capital.

• During the 1830s, the state of Georgia built railroads to provide trading routes to the Midwest region of the United States. Along the eastern end of the railroads, land was developed for businesses and housing. This developed land soon became the town of Atlanta. The city of Atlanta was founded on December 29, 1847. In 1868, Atlanta became the state capital of Georgia. As of 2007, the city of Atlanta had a population of 519, 145 people.

1. After the Civil War, U.S. Army soldiers occupied Atlanta to help rebuild the city and provide assistance to the newly freed slaves during the “Reconstruction Era.”

2. The “Reconstruction Era” refers to the time after the Civil War when the United States was ending slavery and rebuilding the nation.

4. Once the slaves were free, the U.S. government initiated the Freedman’s Bureau Bill under President Abraham Lincoln.

• The Freedmen's Bureau Bill helped former slaves by offering education, health care, and employment assistance.

3. Many of the newly freed slaves that stayed in Atlanta helped in the rebuilding of Atlanta.

• Even though slavery was over, racial prejudices and discrimination continued in the South and throughout the United States.

• During the 1960s, Atlanta was an important center for the Civil Rights Movement. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was born in Atlanta, and many students from “black colleges and universities” around Atlanta played major roles in the movement.

Atlanta Then• During its early history,

Atlanta was part of the agricultural south with its economy based on farming. Soon, the city became a major hub in the transportation of goods and services to the North and the Midwest. With the arrival of World War II, Atlanta turned to manufacturing and building of aircrafts for the military to help boost the economy.

Atlanta Now• Today, Atlanta is one of seven

U.S. cities that are called a “World City.” A World City is a city that plays an important role in the global economic system. With companies like Coca-Cola, UPS, and AT&T headquartered in Atlanta, no wonder it is considered a World City. Also, Delta Airlines is the city’s largest employer and has the world’s largest airport hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This airport is known as the world’s busiest airport.

• In present day Atlanta, there are said to be over 1,000 places to worship. From mosques to synagogues to churches, every faith and every denomination has a place in Atlanta. You can find Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Southern Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, Greek Orthodox, and many more religions throughout the city and its surrounding areas.
