I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PAsToRAl PRAyER ANd ThE loRd’s PRAyER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

oFFERINg ANThEMMagnificat Herbert Sumsion

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For He hath regarded the lowliness of His handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For He that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on them that fear Him throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with His arm. He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He hath sent empty away. He, remembering His mercy, hath holpen His servant Israel as He promised to our forefathers, Abraham, and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PosTludEIn dulci jubilo Johann Sebastian Bach

About This Morning’s Music

The first three stanzas of the opening hymn were written in 1816 by the English Moravian James Montgomery. The fourth verse is a Doxology, added in 1857. Montgomery was a seminary-educated printer and poet. The tune was composed by Henry Thomas Smart and first appeared in the English Presbyterian Hymnal of 1867. The tune is named for Regent Square Church, the English Presbyterian Church in London.

The tune In Dulci Jubilo (In Sweet Jubilation) originally was a German folk tune from the fourteenth century. It first appeared in a hymnbook in 1535. The tune itself first appeared in a manuscript in Leipzig University Library around 1400; some version of the song itself may have existed prior to 1328. It remained well known and often used by Catholic and Protestant churches alike throughout the centuries. We sing it to the carol text, “Good Christian Men, Rejoice.” In Dulci Jubilo is among the oldest and most famous of the “macaronic” songs, one which combines Latin and a vernacular language such as English or German.

leadership Transitions – Earlier this month, Session approved the recommendation of the Human Resources Committee to retain the Reverend Dr. John A. Dalles as Interim Senior Pastor; this action has been approved subsequently by the Pittsburgh Presbytery, and Dr. Dalles has joyfully accepted the appointment. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University and Lancaster and Pittsburgh Theological Seminaries, he has spent more than thirty-five years as a teaching elder and minister of word and sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA). A full biography of Dr. Dalles is published on the church website. With thanksgiving to God, we look forward to welcoming Dr. Dalles and his wife Judith in mid-February.

If you use offering envelopes, they will be available in the Sharp Atrium today. Please help the church to economize on mailing costs by picking up your envelopes.

Midweek Vespers will not be held on Wednesday, January 2. Vespers resume on Wednesday, January 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. These thirty-minute candlelight worship services, with Communion, offer a more intimate worship experience in the midst of our hectic lives. Childcare is available.

Pledges and year-End giving – As we come to the close of the year, please consider whether you have completed paying your pledge for this calendar year. For those who make year-end gifts, please remember the church in your giving. Both pledges and gifts must be received by December 31 in order to be included in this year. Looking ahead, if you have not made your pledge for 2019, please do so by completing one of the pledge forms in the pews and placing it in the offering plate or sending it to the church office.

New “Women at the Well” Bible study – Women of all ages are welcome to gather twice monthly with the “Women at the Well” for in-depth Bible study, discussion, fellowship, and snacks. Join us beginning Thursday, January 10, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Craig Room, as together we seek to quench the thirsting of our souls. If you need more information, please contact Deacon Connie Coffelt through the church office.

Warm up on soup sunday, January 27 – We look forward to filling the Parish Hall with the aroma of hearty and delicious homemade soups on Sunday, January 27. Would you be willing to make a pot of your favorite soup recipe for this event? We are looking for volunteers to contribute a variety of soups — from beef and barley to vegetarian delights, creamy chowders, and more. If you would prefer to make your favorite dessert to contribute, that would be wonderful, too. The kitchen will provide bread, salad, and beverages. Not a cook or a baker? Come and enjoy; there will be plenty to share! Make your reservations by signing up in the Sharp Atrium or by contacting the church office. Could you lend us your crock pot to keep these goodies piping hot? Let us know when you make your reservation. There is no cost to attend.

The items that are most needed include new pillows (must be new by state law); complete queen, full/double, and twin bedding sets; blankets of all sizes (queen are most needed); and towels and washcloths. Please put a size label on the blankets, and bring donations to the Off the Floor truck located outside the Parish Hall before worship or before the soup luncheon. Thank you!

Prayer gatherings occur on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and on Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. You are invited to join us for a time of silent and spoken prayers, as we bring our concerns before God. Mission Partner Spotlight

The Neighborhood Academy (TNA) is a faith-based, independent school with a mission to break the generational cycle of poverty by preparing low-income youth for higher education and citizenship. This school exists to provide a holistic college-prep education for students in grades eight through twelve who come from families demonstrating financial need. TNA is dedicated to developing the minds, bodies, and spirits of students so that they might become fully productive members of our society.

Shadyside Presbyterian Church has supported TNA since its inception, and currently provides an “Over the Bridge Scholarship” that offsets the educational expenses and provides a full scholarship for one student. Shadyside’s Community Kids Mission Action Community (MAC) also offers a book scholarship to a graduating senior and provides opportunities for parishioners to meet students, including mentoring and after-school tutoring. For a complete list of current opportunities, please contact Rev. Todd E. Leach, Associate Pastor for Missions.

In October 2016, half of the mission gift collected for Shadyside Presbyterian Church’s 150th anniversary celebration was given to TNA for the purpose of equipping classrooms as the school grows to include grades six and seven.
