Glad You Asked That - What is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity about? "The intention of Martin Luther five hundred years ago was to renew the Church, not divide her." (Pope Francis) 2017 marks the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, when Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the doors of the Wittenburg Cathedral in Germany. Over the years, the divide between Lutheran and Catholic churches has narrowed, and we have continued to pray for Christian unity for over 100 years in hopes of moving toward the fulfillment of Jesus' prayer at the Last Supper "that they all may be one." (cf. John 17:21)

Encouraged by recent public dialog between Pope Francis and Martin Junge of the Lutheran World Federa-tion, and recommendations from Declaration of the Way, a joint document, prepared by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Saint Patrick Church was recently invited to attend a joint gathering of local Catholic and Lutheran leaders at Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church.

During this meeting on January 17, 2017, fifteen local Lutheran pastors and Catholic priests, deacons, and pastoral coordinators (including myself and Fr. Jerry Graham), shared our experiences and hopes for the future and how we might better come together to pray, worship and serve the Lord as Christians.

Options we are exploring for our communities (as suggested by the Declaration of the Way) include: Study the Bible together. Attend joint adult education classes to teach our respective communities about each other and the progress being made in our relations. Work together to care for those with spiritual, emotional and physical needs in our communities. Enter into covenants to pray for each other during our Sunday liturgies and other gatherings. Local Catholic and Lutheran Clergy gather regularly for common prayer and study. Attend the Interfaith Women’s Conference on March 4, 2017, sponsored by Associated Ministries. We meet again on February 21, 2017. If re-connecting with our Protestant brothers and sisters is of interest to you, please let us know. We would love to get you involved. Feel free to contact me directly at 274-4104, or via email: [email protected]. Saint Patrick - Pray For Us! Kevin Lovejoy

God of all, we pray as one, that we may be one,

just as the Lord Jesus prayed we may be one in Him. Your son Jesus compels us to be reconciled to one another.

May our spirits be joined to your Holy Spirit, that we may witness to the visible unity of your Church.

May we all recognize that we are truly one with you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and grow with you in peace.

We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

CYO Sports Page Basketball The 4th grade girls played St. Nick’s 4th grade team at Bellarmine. We had a great start to the game and were up 4-2. Then St. Nick’s best 5th grade player arrived and we struggled to score because of her great defense and rebounding. We lost 29-7. The girls continue to improve week to week with their defensive skills and their rebounding. As they get stronger, their shooting is improving as well. Keep up the improvement girls and next year you will have much more success. The 4th grade boys played St. Charles at Bellarmine. It was a very exciting game. In the first half neither team could get more than a six point lead before the other team would come roaring back for a tie or a lead change. Late in the second half, our boys jumped out to a 10 point lead, 28-18. With 3 minutes left, St. Charles hit a little jumper to get within 6, 28-22. Both teams played aggressive defense for the next couple minutes and no one scored. Finally, with about 2 minutes left one of the St. Charles boys hit a layup to get within 4, 28-24. We missed our shot and then fouled their player. He hit both of his free throws to pull within 2 points. On our next possession, we had a turnover. The same boy was fouled with 38 seconds left in the game. He stepped up and hit 1 of two free throws. The score was 28-27. Our coach called a time out and drew up a play. The play worked but we missed our shot. St. Charles drove down the court to try to hit the go ahead basket, but we made a great defensive play to get the ball back. With 13 seconds left in the game, the ball was knocked out of bound by St. Charles. Our coach called a time out to have the boys run a play. The ball was stolen with 5 seconds left. Our boys raced down the floor and grabbed the ball out of the St. Charles’ boy’s hand to hold onto their lead and gain a victory! Our 6th grade boys won their 6th game of the season against St. Frances, 5th grade team. At the beginning, it was a close game 6-4, but our height and strength eventually broke them down and we pulled out to a 19 point lead. We won the game 33-14. Our rebounding stars were Peter M., Levi B.; Liam M. Triton V. and John B. controlled the game at point guard. Luke A. played great defense, until he and a St. Frances player both had to leave the game because of a head injury. Jackson B. played a terrific game. He scored easily, rebounded well and made some great passes. The 7th and 6th grade girls met up on Saturday. The game was so fast-paced that 30-minutes FLEW by in no time! Heavy defense kept the 7th graders on their toes. Elise’s efforts finally paid off when she was able to put up 2 points on a rebound. The score was 12–11 at half-time. After Jessica (5 points) and Jo (7) each dropped 3-pointers in the 3rd quarter and Lauryn (6) added another 4, the 7thgraders never looked back. Lillian (4) sealed the win with the final 2 points in the 4th quarter for a 24-19 victory. Onward and upward Shamrocks!!! Volleyball If your son or daughter signed up for volleyball, you should be receiving an email from the athletic director later this week about registration, practice times and policies. If your child missed signing up for volleyball, please contact the athletic director at: [email protected].

Touching Safety Program

The week of February 12th, St. Patrick will offer a sexual abuse prevention course to your child or youth. In our efforts to protect our vulnerable population, the Archdiocese of Seattle has integrated abuse prevention material into our faith formation and youth ministry curriculum in the context of teaching our youth about our Catholic faith. To help you understand what your youth will be offered, we ask you to visit: http://www.seattlearchdiocese.org/SEP/faithformation.aspx

This will provide you with “Parent/ Guardian Resources”, to inform you about the curriculum being used while also making available the actual lessons. As the guardian, you have the right to opt your child/youth out of this lesson. You may do so by signing the ‘opt out’ form sent to you through your child’s Faith Formation or Youth program. This announcement is to notify you of our new initiative to provide abuse prevention curriculum to our youth in Faith Formation/Youth Ministry. Unless you would like to opt your youth out of this lesson, you are not required to do anything. Questions? Contact Kim Ward at the Parish Center at: 383-2783 ext. 4108

St. Vincent de Paul

Your donations to the monthly St. Vincent de Paul collection

make it possible for St. Patrick Vincentians to make home visits

and help low (or no) income residents within St. Patrick Parish boundaries,

who struggle to pay for life's necessities, such as utilities, food,

gasoline, beds and clothes. Monetary collections take place the first weekend of each month.

Any donation you can give is appreciated!

Respect Life

The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. This theme is found also in the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37).

When the Good Samaritan came along, he didn't ask, "If I help this man, what will happen to me?" Instead the Good Samaritan asked, "If I do not help this man, what will happen to him?"

That's the question for us. If I do not address this evil, what will happen to the unborn? If I do not get involved, what will happen to those who are vulner-able, those who are marginalized in our society, those who are oppressed, those who have no one to speak for them?

There are many ways to help, publicly or privately, individually or as a group, occasionally or more regularly, by giving your time or your experience or expertise or financially. Call Paddie at: 627-0162 .

Retreat Center at Palisades - Upcoming Retreats

“A New Lay Spirituality: Faith & the Secular World”

In this retreat Ron Ryan, D.Min., will present a new approach to spirituality for lay people. He will explore four key elements: understanding the lay vocation; developing a healthy worldview; growing in inner authority; and practicing discernment. Sessions will be interactive and involve exercises for personal application.

Led by Ron Ryan, D.Min. Men’s & Women’s Retreat February 17th-19th Register at: PalisadesRetreatCenter.Org “Encountering Christ in the Sacraments of Healing”

The same physical, spiritual, and emotional healing we see in the gospels is available to each of us when we encounter Christ in the healing sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Anointing of the Sick. In this Lenten retreat, we will explore how to open our lives more to the graces God desires to give us in all the healing sacraments. Conference sessions and ample time for prayer will help us to encounter Christ's love and redemption in the celebration of the healing sacraments.

Led by Fr. David Mulholland Men’s & Women’s Retreat February 24th-26th, Register at: PalisadesRetreatCenter.Org

NW Furniture Bank

Dozens of agencies work with the homeless, domestic violence victims and low-income population providing temporary housing

and recovery programs. When clients complete the programs they may

have new housing and a new focus for their life, however, they often have no furniture.

NW Furniture Bank meets these needs by providing furniture to those transitioning

into their own homes. Furniture is also available for foster children who

age-out of the program and for people who lose all of their possessions in natural disasters.

NW Furniture Bank relies on furniture donations from the community to help furnish the homes of

families and individuals in need. We can only accept new or gently-used items.

The NW Furniture Bank accepts donations Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday

9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Remember all donations must be free of
