One: We gather in this sacred place: ALL: A place of wisdom.

A place of connection. A place of love. A place of light.

One: May the love that breathes life into all humanity and all of creation

ALL: Continue to be born in us today.

As the gift of music is offered, the Christ Candle Is Lit…

"Ain’t Nobody, Nowhere Nothin’ Without God"

composer: Duke Ellington Carolyn Curry, soprano; accompanied by Brass United

    Gathering Together

One: Friends, the God of hope is calling, ALL: Offering refreshment to those who are weary and heavy laden. One: Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens,

and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

One: Friends, the God of peace is calling, ALL: Offering tender words of comfort to those in distress. One: Come children, how often I have longed to gather you together

as a hen gathers her brood under her wings. Matthew 23:37, alt.

come buy and eat without money and without cost. Isaiah 55:1, alt.

One: Friends, come, God is calling us to worship. ALL: It is an offer too irresistible to refuse. Hymn I’ve Got Peace Like a River Voices United 577

    Gathering Prayer

“All I wanted was to see a movie.” Viola Desmond – 1946

Here, on the pulse of this new day May we have the grace to look up and out And into our sister’s eyes, Into your brother’s face, And say simply Very simply With hope, Good Morning.

adapted from ‘On the Pulse of Morning’ by Maya Angelou. Angelou read the complete poem at the 1993 inauguration of President Bill Clinton

We Pause and Take a Moment to Greet Each Other: Good Morning!

Let’s Sing! The spirit in me greets the spirit in you, Alleluia. God’s in us and we’re in God, Alleluia.

    words & music: Jim Strathdee

Moment for All This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Songs & Stories Today, We Embark on a Journey in Song

God, you taught our ancestors to sing with their souls while in a foreign land.

Through music, you taught Black peoples to persevere and trust in you, even as their hearts and bodies were broken.

  • 4

Your power God, moved through our ancestors, as the rhythm and cadence of music moves through our bodies.

There would be no Underground Railroad or Civil Rights Movement without a song, and there would be no song without you.

Let everything that has breath, praise you! Let everything that has breath, praise you!

    Psalm 150:6

    ♫ ‘Go Down Moses’

Drawing upon the biblical story of liberation found in the Book of Exodus, this African American spiritual dates from before the Civil War.

    ♫‘Steal Away to Jesus’ insert

♫ ‘Over My Head’ refrain, verse 1, refrain

    ♫ ‘Oh, Freedom’

This post-Civil War African-American freedom song is often associated with the American Civil Rights Movement. In 1963, Joan Baez performed the song at the March on Washington.

♫ ‘Precious Lord’ Voices United 670

Ministry of Music ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’

Musicologists attribute this song to be written sometime after 1865 by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman. Some sources claim that this song’s lyrics are a reference to the Underground Railroad. In 1939, Nazi Germany's Reich Music Examination Office added the song to a listing of

"undesired and harmful" musical works. In 2011, it was named as the official Oklahoma State Gospel Song.

We Prepare to Offer our Gifts

    composer: Duke Ellington

Carolyn Curry, soprano; accompanied by Brass United

    Offertory~ Prayer

We use our gifts for God. We use our gifts for God. When things go right, when things go wrong,

    Prayers of the People

As we gather, and as we draw our prayers to a close, you are invited to join in the sung response:

Hush! hush!, somebody's callin' mah name. Hush! hush!, somebody's callin' mah name. Hush! Hush! somebody's callin' mah name Oh my Lord, oh my Lord, what shall I do?

    Words of Parting and Blessing

God is colour: seen in different ways

by many different people. God is unconditional love:

though we may come in various unique packages. God loves us all, just the same.

After the storm, God is the rainbow of differences.

‘A Creed” written by the Waterville-Hately-North Hately (Quebec) Confirmation group.

One: Go into the world: dance, laugh, sing, and create.

ALL: We go to live our faith! One: Go into the world: risk, explore, discover, and love.

ALL: We go, filled with God’s love! One: Go into the world:

believe, hope, struggle, and give praise. ALL: We go in the light of God!

    And so we sing…

We are marching in the light of God, We are marching in the light of God. We are marching in the light of God, We are marching in the light of God.

We are marching, marching, We are marching, marching,

We are marching in the light of God. We are marching, marching, We are marching, marching,

We are marching in the light of God

Woodson founded Negro History Week to recognize the achievements made by African Americans. Woodson purposefully chose February because of the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln who were both key figures in the emancipation of enslaved Blacks.

Recognition, Justice and Development.’ And in 2018, Premier Stephen McNeil proclaimed years 2015–2024 as the ‘United

Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent in Nova Scotia.’

We join with our sisters and brothers of all cultures in honoring the contributions and struggles of peoples of African descent.
