Weareafamilyclubandassuchwedonothavealimitonthenumbersweaccept,wewanttoencourage

youngpeopletotryoutoursportandhavesomefun,

cometoloveitandcontinueon.

Bearingthisinmindandthefactthatintrackandfield

thereare12disciplinesinthejuniorevents,andthat

wecanhaveupto300childreninourjuniorsection,

wearereliantonourfamiliestohelpruntheclub.Thehelpweneedwillbeoutlinedfurtheron.

Wehaveawonderfuldedicatedteamofcommittee

membersandcoachesbutwecontinuallystriveto

makethingsbetterforourkids.

OurHistory

ThePapanuiTocHAthleticClubIncwasformedin1982.Itwascreatedoutofthe

amalgamationofthePapanuiRedwoodAthleticClubandtheTocHTrackandFieldClubbothofwhichhadastronghistorywiththesport.TheTocHHarrierclub

addeditsstrengthtothisclubin1987.Todaytheclubstillcontinuestobeastrongforceinathleticsandhasachievedsuccessacrossallaspectsofthesport.Overthe

yearsourmembershavecompetedatalllevelfromOlympics,WorldChampionships,CommonwealthGamesalongwithnationalandlocal

competitions.

TheclubanditsfacilitiesarebasedatthePapanuiHighSchoolwithentrytothe

clubroomsandparkingthroughthemainentranceonLangdonsRd.

TheHistoryofTocH

In1915armychaplaintheReverendPhillipByard(Tubby)Claytonwassentto

FranceandthenontothetownofPoperingeinBelgium.SittingafewmilesbackfromthetrenchesaroundYpres(nowadaysknownbyitsFlemishnameIeper),

Popsasthesoldierscalleditwasabusytransferstationwheretroopsontheir

waytoandfromthebattlefieldsofFlanderswerebilleted.Clayton,universallyknownasTubby,wasinstructedbyhisseniorchaplain,NevilleTalbot,tosetup

somesortofresthouseforthetroops.

Rentingahopmerchantshousetemporarilyvacatedbyitsowner-touseashisbase,Tubbydecidedtosteerawayfromthetraditionalchurchclubandsetupan

EverymansHouse.ItwasnamedTalbotHouseinhonourofGilbertTalbot

(Nevillesbrother)whohadbeenkilledearlierintheyear.Ofcourse,soldiersbeingsoldiers,TalbotHousesoonbecameknownbyitsinitialsTH,andthen,intheradio

signalersparlanceofthedayasTocH.Itopenedon11Dec1915.

Tubbyensuredthehousewasopentomenandofficersalike.Hecreatedalibrary

wheresoldierscouldcheckoutabookbyleavingtheircapbehindasaticket.Tubbywasashrewdmanandknewthatnosoldierwoulddarereportforduty

withoutacapsohealwaysgothisbooksback.Therewasalargekitchenwheremuchteawasconsumed,abeautifulwalledgardenwheremencouldsitandforgetaboutthewarforawhile,andeventually,intheattichoploft,achapelwhere

regularserviceswereheld.ItwasthischapelorUpperRoom,whichbecameafocalpointformanyandwasknownastheheartoftheHouse.Somehadtheir

confirmationhereandmanyattendedtheirfirstcommunioninthisspecialplace.

Sadly,formany,theirlastcommunionwouldbeheldhere.FormostoftheGreatWarTalbotHouseofferedanoasisofsanitytothemen

passingthroughPoperinge.NotonlycouldtheysocialisebutTubbyalsoorganised

debatesandconcerts.MencouldpostmessagesfortheirmissingcomradesandhopetheytoomightstopatTalbotHouseandseethem.Whatwasclearthough

wasthattheTalbotHousepromotedaspecialfeelingoffellowshipwiththosewhorestedthereawhile.

Whenpeacecame,TubbywassenttoEnglandtofindpremisesforaTestSchoolforsoldierswhowishedtobeordained(eventuallysettlingontheoldKnutsford

jail).However,theFellowshipofTalbotHousewasstronginTubbysheartandin

1919hefinishedhisworkatKnutsfordtoreturntoLondon.HisdreamwastoopenanewTalbotHousewherethefellowshipandcamaraderieoftheoriginal

housecouldberediscovered.GatheringaroundhimmanyofthemenwhohadpassedthroughTalbotHouseduringthewar,hesetabouthisplans.Thefirst

committeemetinNovember1919.TheydecidedtodropthenameTalbotHouse,

astherewasalreadysuchaplaceinSouthLondon,sotheyadoptedthesoldiersnicknameofTocHasthenewnamefortheirmovement.Allthosewhohadvisited

TalbotHouseduringthewarbecametheFoundationMembers(includingasmallhandfulofwomen).

AcquiringahouseinQueensgatePlace,Knightsbridge,TubbyopenedthefirstofTocHshostels,whichwastobehomeformencomingtoLondonforworkand

havingnowheretostay.Thehousequicklyprovedtoosmallandwithinafew

weekstheymovedtoalargerhouseinQueensgateGardens,whichwasnamedarmyfashion(TalbotHouse)Mark1.WithintheMark,mencouldsharethe

fellowshipthatTubbysowantedtorekindle.Soon,theMarksmenastheybecameknowntooktocarryingoutsomeformofserviceinthecommunitynear

theMarkandsotwoprimaryaimsofTocHFellowshipandServicewerebeing

fulfilled.AsmenlefttheMarks(therewerealreadythreeinLondonbyearly1921)and

returnedtotheirhometowns,theysetupgroupsofTocHtocarryoutservice

locally.Afteraperiodofprobationagroupwouldbeelevatedtoabranchand(aftertheywereintroducedin1922)grantedoneofthefamouslamps.

TheearlieststatementoftheaimsofTocHwasdrawnupbyTubbywiththeRev

'Dick'SheppardofStMartin-in-the-Fields,andAlexander(laterSirAlexander)Pattersonearlyin1920.Itwasrevisedin1936andagainin1967.Itisknownas

theFourPointsoftheCompassandisnowsummarisedthus:

1.FRIENDSHIP:Tolovewidely.

Toprovidememberswithopportunitiestodevelopaspiritofunderstandingand

reconciliation.

2.SERVICE:Tobuildbravely.

Toenablemembers,withtheirvaryinggifts,toservetheirfellows.

3.FAIRMINDEDNESS:Tothinkfairly.

Tobringtomemberstheknowledgeandexperienceofothers.

4.THEKINGDOMOFGOD:Towitnesshumbly.

Toworkforabetterworldthroughtheexampleoffriendship,serviceandfair-mindedness.

ClubNightsTuesday5.30-7pm

ThesenightsareforallchildrenregisteredwithTocH.

Itinvolvesthechildrencompetinginfriendlycompetitionwithintheirageandgendergroups.

Theyfollowasetprogramme,whichrotates,onatwoweeklybasis

Theywillaccumulatepointsovertheseasonbasedontheirperformance.Usingadecathlonstylepointssystem.

Pointswillnotbeallocatedinthefirst2weeksoftheseasonwhilstthechildrenlearntheropesandgetbasicinstruction.

Attheendoftheseasonnotonlydoweholdclubchampsbutalsoweallocate

prizesbasedonclubpoints.TheeventsprogrammeispostedeachTuesdayonthenoticeboard.

ChildrendonotneedauniformtocompeteonTuesdaysjustsportsclothesand

shoesmustbeworn.Juniorchildrenunder7willhaveaskillssessionforaperiodof45minsafterwhich

timetheymustbecollectedastherewillbeno-onetobabysitthem,theymaythenaccompanyparentstowatcholderchildren.

TrackandFieldeventswehavemanydisciplines-12infact:50m,60m,100m,200m,400m,shot,discus,longjump,highjump(10years

+),hurdles(12years+)

800m/1500m(thelongdistanceeventsareruneverysecondweekandalternate,thosewishingtocompetemustarriveby5.15astheyarerunearlydue

totimeconstraints)

Eachweekwehave2lotsofthefieldeventsrunning,sowehave8differentfield

events,whichneed3-5adultstoruneffectively,plusthetrackevents,whichneedaminimumof3timekeepersand2atthestartsand2atthefinishline.

SoyoucanseeweneedmanyhandsondeckjusttorunourclubnightsonaTuesday

Weaiminthefirst2weekstogivebasiccoachingateacheventnotonlytothekidsbuttotheparentswhowillthensubsequentlyruntheevents.Thecoachesand

coachhelpersarethenfreetogoroundandgivealittlehelpwereneeded,tweakif

tweakingneeded,supportintherealmofchildrensbehaviourifneeded.

Thusitisvitalthatallchildrenarerepresentedeachweekbyatleastoneadultwhohelpsoutateachstationastheyfollowtheirchild/childrenaroundthe

course.

InthisbookletyouwillfinddetailsofeachfieldeventcourtesyofColgate-oneof

athleticssupporters,therewillbeanotherofthesesheetsontheboardateachstation.

Wealsoexpecteachfamilytohelpout3timesintheseasonasaneventorganizer-youwillbeallocatedaneventtosetup,runandpackup,pleaseputyourname

ChildrenwhoarekeentocompetefurtherregisterwiththeCanterburyChildren's

AthleticAssociation,whichrunsSaturdaymorningathleticcompetitionforChildren,aged7-14fromlateOctoberthroughtoEarlyMarcheachyear.Events

startat9ambutchildrenneedtobeatRawhitiDomainby8.30inordertowarm

upandbeattheirfirsteventontimeintheeventofa9amstart.

CanterburyChildrensAthleticssetthefeebutwe,asaclubwillorganizeregistrationonyourchildsbehalfoncethefeeispaidtous.

Theyarewelcometocomeandtryoutforthefirstcoupleofweeks,butthereafter

mustberegisteredandwillbegivenaregistrationnumber,whichmustbeworninordertocompete.

ChildrenaccumulatepointsonSaturdays,whichgotowardspersonal,andclub

widepointsattheendoftheyear.ThereisalsoagreatCanterburyChildrensChampionships2dayweekendatthe

endoftheyear,whichhasaseparatepointssystem.Eachweekattheendofthemorningtherelaysarerun,thesealternatedepending

ongenderandage.Itismuchappreciatedifchildrenletusknowearlyontheday

whethertheywillbeabletostayforrelaysornotasitcanbeamissiontoorganizeteams.

ChildrenmustwearclubuniformforSaturdaycompetition-seebelow

WeasaclubrunoneofthelongjumppitsonaSaturdayandwillneedparentalhelpforaperiodoftimeonSaturdayswiththis.

Onafewoccasionsthroughouttheseasonwealsohavetobethereearlytosetupforthedayandrequestswillbemadeforpeopletocomehelponsuchdays

Atthestartoftheseasonallcompetitorsneedtobuyacompetitionbookletfora

smallfeewhichhaslotsofusefulinformationabouthowSaturdayswork,detailsofevents,datesetc.Weencourageparents/athletestogetoneoftheseonthefirst

Saturdayandreaditthroughitisveryuseful.

DuetothelossofQE2wenowgotoTimaruaboutonceamonthtousethe

facilitiesthere.Thisallowsthechildrentocompeteonaproperrunningtrack.

ClubUniform:OnlyneedstobewornforInterclubCompetitionSingletsavailablefromStirlingSportsNorthlands.

Shorts,inplainblackorroyalblue.Lightshoesadvisedfor9andunder.

Spikesmaybewornby10yearsandup,theymustnotbewornoffthefieldfor

safetyreasons.

Coaching

Weintroducedfeesforcoachingin2010/2011seasoninordertoputacoachingprogrammeinplace.

CoachingcurrentlytakesplaceonaThursdayeveningfrom5.30to7pm.

Thecoachingisreviewedeachyearandthusdetailswillbeavailableseparatelyoncetheseasonbegins.

Weareveryfortunatetohavesomesuperbseniorcoacheswithinourclubandsomenewcoachescomingthrough.Howeverinacluboursizeweconstantlyare

lookingtotryandincreaseourpoolofcoachesatalllevelsandwithinall

disciplines.Soanybodywhoisinterestedpleasemakethemselvesknown.Coachingisavailabletoallourregisteredathleteswhosignuptothecoaching

scheme.

Onthisbasisyouwillfindfeesforcoachingontheregistrationform.

Rememberallparentsaretheirchildrensfirstteachers-weareallcapable.

Somejustneedmorehelporencouragement,somealreadyhavetalentsbutwedo

notknowthat.Thosewhohavecoachedothersportswillalreadyhavemanyoftheskillsneeded.

In2011wewereluckyenoughtoopenournewtrackwhichBuzzhasworked

towardsforyears.DespitetheEarthquakesithassurvivedverywellbutwedoneedtothinkaheadtoatimewhenitwillneedreplacements/repairs-tothisend

wehavehadtoaddatracklevytoeveryathleteform2011onwards.

TheColgateGames

The Colgate Games are held annually in both the North and the SouthIslands, and are coordinated by the New Zealand Childrens AthleticAssociation Inc. The games are a great athletic and social event, anda chance to meet other athletes from other centres. The emphasis ison participation and enjoyment, and entry is open to any registeredathlete not just Saturday athletes.Our club usually has a good turn out and it is a great event.The event moves location from year to year, please see yourregistration booklet for more details.
