Paul speaks of the hidden dynamics of evangeliza-

tion. He tells the Thessalonians they were chosen

not by Paul’s preaching but rather through the

power of God that rode upon his words. As evan-

gelists, we are vehicles of God’s grace and power.

Success does not depend upon us. We are not to

congratulate ourselves when it is present or tear

ourselves down when it is not. Our role is to be

but the means for the conveyance of God’s grace.

To do so we must be careful, we must prepare,

and we must do our best.

But let us also step back. Let us allow room for

God; for God plants the seed and causes it to ger-

minate. Much of what we do in announcing the

good news depends upon knowing when to get out

of the way, so that God’s grace can work. A good

way to cultivate this practice is to pray right be-

fore we undertake any evangelization. In doing so

we acknowledge that this is God’s work. We give

thanks that we have been invited to share in it.

And we ask that the power of God be in our words

and actions.

Pablo habla de la dinámica oculta de la evange-

lización. Les dice a los tesalonicenses que no

fueron elegidos por la predicación de Pablo, sino

por el poder de Dios que cabalgó sobre sus

palabras. Como evangelistas, somos vehículos de

la gracia y el poder de Dios. El éxito no depende

de nosotros. No debemos felicitarnos cuando está

presente o derribarnos cuando no lo está. Nuestro

papel debe ser sólo el medio para transmitir la

gracia de Dios. Para hacerlo, debemos tener

cuidado, debemos prepararnos y debemos hacer

nuestro mejor esfuerzo.

Pero retrocedamos también. Dejemos espacio para

Dios; porque Dios planta la semilla y la hace ger-

minar. Mucho de lo que hacemos al anunciar las

buenas nuevas depende de saber cuándo apartar-

nos del camino, para que la gracia de Dios pueda

obrar. Una buena forma de cultivar esta práctica

es orar justo antes de emprender cualquier evan-

gelización. Al hacerlo, reconocemos que esta es la

obra de Dios. Damos gracias por haber sido in-

vitados a compartirlo. Y pedimos que el poder de

Dios esté en nuestras palabras y acciones.

According to testimonies from Lucia (who would go on to become a Carmelite nun known as Sis-ter Lucia), Our Lady asked that the faithful pray the Rosary each day.

St. Isaac Jogues, S.J. (10 January 1607 – 18 October 1646) was

missionary and martyr who traveled and worked among

the Iroquois, Huron, and other Native populations in North

America. He was the first European to name Lake George, call-

ing it Lac du Saint Sacrement (Lake of the Blessed Sacrament).

In 1646, Jogues was martyred by the Mohawk at their village

of Ossernenon, north of the Mohawk River.

San Isaac Jogues, S.J. (10 de enero de 1607 - 18 de octubre de

1646) fue un misionero y mártir que viajó y trabajó entre los iro-

queses, hurones y otras poblaciones nativas de América del

Norte. Fue el primer europeo en nombrar Lake George,

llamándolo Lac du Saint Sacrement (Lago del Santísimo Sacra-

mento). En 1646, Jogues fue martirizado por los Mohawk en su

pueblo de Ossernenon, al norte del río Mohawk.

Jogues, Jean de Brébeuf and six other martyred missionaries,

all Jesuit priests or laymen associated with them, were canon-

ized by the Catholic Church in 1930; they are known as

"The North American Martyrs". A shrine was built in their hon-

or at Auriesville, New York, at a site formerly believed to be

that of the Mohawk village. Their feast day is celebrated on 19

October in the General Roman Calendar, and on 26 September

in Canada.

sacerdotes jesuitas o laicos asociados con ellos, fueron canoniza-

dos por la Iglesia Católica en 1930; se les conoce como "Los

mártires norteamericanos". Se construyó un santuario en su
