Elections for the Family and Friends committee will be held early next term and they are seeking more people to join and take part in the organisation of events. I can recommend this group as warm and welcoming and of great value to the school so please contact them at [email protected] if you are interested in joining the committee. The Waipaparoa Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning) now has a web site and is starting to work with teachers to make a difference to the learning for our students at Point View, Somerville, Botany Downs Secondary College, Shelly Park, Cockle Bay and Willowbank schools. Howick College is also keeping closely in-touch with our progress. Two teachers have been appointed as leaders with responsibility across all the schools and each school has a number of teachers who will work within their own school communities. They will develop the Kāhui Ako achievement challenges which are to increase learner agency, develop critical inquiry and improve literacy. On behalf of the school I wish everyone in our School Community a safe and happy autumn break in preparation for an action packed Term 2. Robin Kirkham Principal

Family and Friends Family and Friends are looking for new members, we have our AGM coming up on 7th May and our existing chairperson is stepping down.

What do Family and Friends do??

We are a small group of parents and staff who are work to build a good link between our community and the school. Our aim is to provide fun activities for the children and parents (with an added bonus of making a little money for the school). It is a great way for you as parents to be involved in your child’s school and a fantastic way to make new friends. Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month in the upper staff room. These meetings are informal and everyone is very welcome. If you are interested in joining this fantastic group of people and want to know more then please do get in touch, contact us by emailing family&[email protected]

ESOL Cultural/Duality Maps Mrs Chong's groups have been working on cultural/duality maps. Duality maps show the differences between one culture and another. They show how each culture is different but they overlap and expand each other.

Students chose a topic to compare such as food, school or clothing.

The students then shared their maps with their classroom.

Language is culture! Culture is language!

The Marae Visit On Monday 1st April the Kapa Haka group went on an awesome trip to Manurewa Marae. They saw amazing artwork, kites and the instructors showed them all the “body parts” and carvings in the Marae.

To start off our day we had a wonderful powhiri Some of the tutors spoke for us as the manuhiri (or visitors) after this the we sang '' Te Aroha''. We then shook hands and hongied the tangata whenua

(people from the marae).

After our powhiri we practised our waiata and haka powhiri ready for the Friday assembly.

We had to scream so loud everyone's voice got really croaky.

Next we chatted away until Whaia Pingu (one of the instructors) told us to all gather up and play a game! We played some games and learnt about the body parts in the Marae. We also played a game called pepeha to warm up so we were ready to act out a local legend.

We ended the day exhausted and tired, but we had lots of great fun! On Friday we performed our haka powhiri and everyone clapped at the end. These experiences really helped us, and we hope we can go again!

With limited funding for children with learning needs, many schools find themselves without the resources to support children who would benefit from one-on-one reading attention in their classroom. Reading Amigos mission is to change this by connecting those with some spare time to children in need. We’d like to trial this idea at Point View School. The school will link you to students for you to support by listening to them read, talking about what they have read and asking them questions about what they have read, so they improve their reading confidence and comprehension. If you have time to spare, just an hour a week or more, and would like to make a meaningful contribution to the future of New Zealand’s next generation, please turn over for details on how to get involved. All we need is your time! A police check is required and will be organised by the school. Go to our website and register your interest. www.readingamigos.com or email us at [email protected] If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected]

Do you, or anyone you know, have a little bit of spare time?

Playing chess develops self-confidence, concentration and problem-solving skills. We are pleased to continue the Chess Coaching Programme at your school and look forward to bringing the excitement, competition and educational benefits of chess to your children.

Why Chess? * Improve concentration and focus * Develop important life skills – fair play and decision making * Tactical & Strategic thinking * Prepare for Chess Tournaments against other schools * Develop a love of chess, of learning and of thinking

What happens in a Chess Power Coaching Programme? Each session starts with a formal lesson; all players will learn a new strategy, idea or skill each week. Then they put those skills into practice with activities and games. All games are monitored and supervised by the coach who provides individual feedback along the way. Throughout the programme, we reward kids that do well and encourage and support kids that are struggling. At completion of the programme we recognise each child with a certificate based on their performance.

Tip Top Fun Day 2019 We have a wonderful group of seniors who provide service to the school in many different ways. The Tip Top Fun Day is a way to acknowledge their hard work and commitment and say thank you. On Sunday a team of 42 senior students competed in a day of fun, relay style activities. Here are a few photos from the day. Join us in assembly early next term to hear and see more. Until then, a huge thank you to Pakuranga Rotary and their sponsors, our wonderful, helpful parents and of course the amazing students.
