STEWARDSHIP

ACTS 3: 13-15, 17-19; PS 4: 2, 4-9; 1 JN 2: 1-5A; LK 24: 35-48

The final line of the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles is, “Repent, therefore, that your sins may be wiped away.” This is part of a message which Peter evidently often stated as he evangelized and spread the word about the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

Penance, repentance, is an important part of our Catholic faith. One of our seven Sacraments, there is much in Church doctrine about the importance of this sacrament. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1424) states, “It is called the sacrament of confession, since the disclosure or confession of sins to a priest is an essential element. In a profound sense it is also a “confession” — acknowledgement and praise — of the holiness of God and of His mercy toward sinful men and women.”

When St. Peter was speaking and used the term “wiped away,” that had more meaning to the people of his time. Imagine if sins were listed on a document in ink. In ancient times the ink had no acid content, and thus it could be “wiped away” with a damp cloth. That was the image Peter was presenting. For us going to confession literally “wipes away” our sins.

God’s forgiveness is central to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Sacrament of Confession (reconciliation) means that from God’s perspective it is as though our sins have never even occurred. In the Book of Hebrews the Lord declares, “I will never again remember their sins” — after repentance, that is.

OFFERING

Week of April 8 – April 14

Weekend Offertory: $ 13,879.56 Electronic Giving: $ 6,223.66 Total: $ 20,103.22 Average Weekly Budget Amount: $ 12,500.00

Listening to the seven Old Testament readings about the salvific act of God seems to take a long period of time during our Easter Vigil. Yet it sets the context of the hard, difficult journey of the people (aka, us!) from the slavery of the darkness of sins to the light of liberation, living according to the plan of God. Ultimately, the Easter Vigil helps us celebrate the New Covenant that God makes to us through Jesus Christ.

This Easter pattern of journey and of reaching our destination through Jesus can help us look more closely at our own life situations and then move towards helping others. Through Easter, we see our common vision of the Church: GO AND MAKE OTHERS DISCIPLES. The journey we are on is as the one People of God. Because of Easter, we know where we are going and we know who is leading us.

Easter means RENEWING OUR RESPONSE TO OUR BAPTISMAL CALLS AND EMBRACING THE THREEFOLD MISSION OF CHRIST: priestly, prophetic and kingly.

In this way, Easter is a time to leave behind the past, look at the VISION of Jesus and take steps to help the rest of the people of God, esp. the poor, in their journey from death to resurrection.

Do you feel called to serve in Church? Maybe you've wondered how to become a lector or extraordinary minister of Eucharist? Do you feel called to greet your fellow parishioners as they enter the church? Did you know that to become a lector you only need to be 13 and confirmed? Or to serve as an extraordi-nary minister of Eucharist you only need to be 16 and confirmed? Would you prayerfully consider being part of these ministries or sign your family up to greet once a month at your chosen Mass? We'd love to have you because we are ALL part of this Church! Call the parish office and speak to Shannon for more information on how to be trained for your chosen ministry. We would love to welcome more people to participate in the liturgy, our greatest prayer!

FAMILY CONNECTION

Third Sunday of Easter Theme: Being able to see the Risen Christ. Breaking Open the Word Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Gospel Step One: Listen to the Word As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What image from this reading lingers in your mind? What feeling did it give you? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: Name some times when you know Jesus is with you. Question for Youth: What are some ways that you know that God is with you? Who are the people, where are the places, and what are the occasions when you feel closest to God? Question for Adults: When have you had an "Aha" moment, when you suddenly realized that God was with you?

Then He opened their minds to understand

the Scriptures

J esus declared that His followers are to preach the Good News of the Gospel to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Jerusalem, of course,

was the historical “birthplace” of the Church: it was there that Jesus celebrated His Last Supper, and there that He died and rose from the dead. It was in Jerusalem that the apostles waited during those ten days after Jesus’ Ascension for the Holy Spirit to come down upon them from Heaven, to fill their hearts, minds, and souls.

Those days of waiting for the Holy Spirit to come were days of being withdrawn from the world. Those days were a winter of sorts. The apostles prayed intently, in order to prepare a place inside themselves for the Holy Spirit to dwell. For you, then, “Jerusalem” represents both the historical city where the Church began, and the place in your soul where God plants His grace for the sake of its bearing fruit.

When Jesus tells us to preach the Gospel to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem, he means for us to preach the Gospel to as many people as we can, beginning with those closest to our souls: those within our homes, in our classrooms, and in our neighborhoods. It’s to the people there that Jesus is sending us when he says, “As the Father sent me, so I send you.”

There are many ways of “preaching”. We should keep in mind the saying of Saint Francis of Assisi: “Preach always, and if necessary, use words.” That is to say, you can preach without opening your mouth. The Christian’s example is usually more persuasive than his words, since most of us Christians are not gifted speakers.

The greatest example we can offer is forgiveness. As the Father forgave us through Jesus’ Death on the Cross, so we are called to forgive others. There are different ways to forgive, but our example of forgiving has to be a Christian example. There are different ways to forgive. Anyone with an ounce of humanity forgives others who have hurt him. The Christian, however, offers forgiveness first, not seeking an apology from others, and not even expecting it at the same time: just as Christ on the Cross not only did not receive an apology from those around Him, but received instead mockery and scorn.

For us, too, Jesus does not wait to forgive us until we are good enough to appear before Him and offer an apology. He offers to cleanse us of our sinfulness when we are yet babies, unable even to speak or realize that we are born into the world as sinful members of the human family. We in our turn should offer forgiveness from our hearts and through our words and actions before someone who has wronged us even asks for it. This is the message that alone can bring peace to the world, and that have the power to make present in our own day and age the words of Jesus: “Peace be with you.”

All Aspects of our Lives Are Imbued with the Joy of the Resurrection

During the Easter season the liturgy of the word portrays remarkable passages of the Scriptures in which the risen Christ appears to his disciples as a tangible evidence of his resurrection. Although the disciples seem to be startled and perplexed in the presence of the resurrected Christ, they end up recognizing him in the breaking of the bread. God al-ways fulfills his promises, and Jesus himself becomes the fulfillment of what had been promised in the Old Testament. Because of the resurrection of Jesus, we go from oppres-sion to freedom, human powerlessness to divine empowerment, darkness to light, sinful ways to moral righteousness, and condemnation to eternal salvation. Our belief in the res-urrection entails a total surrender to God’s will as well as a deep commitment to observe his commandments. Moreover, when we rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus, all aspects of our life are indeed imbued with the joy brought to us through Christ’s redemptive work. If we all believe that Jesus Christ has been raised from the dead, then let us be witnesses of

the resurrection among those who live on the verge of depression, hopelessness, desperation, and helplessness.
