MISSION STATEMENT

Message from Fr. Timothy January is Life Month Today marks the first day that I am 95% immune to the Coronavirus. Thanks to some friends at Mercy Medical Center, where I visit a lot of patients, I was invited to get the 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. I am not sure if 95% immunity means I would be immune 95% of the times I am exposed or if it means that 95 out of each 100 persons to receive the vaccine are completely im-mune. There are many questions and many things sci-ence does not yet know. We don’t know if there will be any future side effects or unwanted consequences ei-ther. Nevertheless, I feel confident that the vaccine will go a long way towards helping us out of this pandemic – on both a personal and societal level. Many people also want to know if it is a morally right or even obliga-tory to get vaccinated. I think each person needs to make his own decision. As we weigh that choice, we need to keep in mind not only our own personal safety but the safety of others around us. One particular ques-tion that most commonly arises when investigating the vaccine is the morality behind its development. By their own admission, some pharmaceutical companies (perhaps all of them) used existing cell lines taken from aborted humans for use in developing and/or testing the Coronavirus vaccine. This is sad, disturbing, and needs to be firmly opposed. Such a flagrant and cavalier disre-gard for the life of our brothers and sisters naturally inspires repugnance in the minds of anyone who recog-nizes that the life of every human person is a sacred thing. No wonder many persons feel the need to protest these murders by rejecting the vaccine, seeing it as tainted by the culture of death. I see this as a noble sentiment and one that helps us never to forget the need to constantly oppose those who foist abortion on us ever more aggressively. It has only been two years since our state legislature proclaimed abortion – the murder of a child – as a human right. Expect more on that in the future. Expect to be accused of human rights violations if you oppose abortion. Getting back to the vaccine, yes, it is sad that the cells of aborted children were used in this way. Nevertheless, the knowledge resulting from this unjust action cannot be negated be-cause it was obtained in an inhumane way. Please see the articles found on our webpage explaining the ac-ceptability of the vaccine from a moral position. Accept-ing the vaccine does not necessarily imply acceptance of all the procedures used in its development. The best moralists of the Church, persons whom I trust, have helped me understand that accepting the vaccine does not make me complicit to abortion. Enero – mes de la vida Hoy es para mí el primer día de inmunidad contra el coronavirus. Gracias a mis amigos de Mercy Medical Center donde suelo visitar a los enfermos, tuve la opor-tunidad de recibir las 2 dosis de la vacuna Pfizer. Su-puestamente ahora estoy 95% inmune. Pero tenemos muchas preguntas todavía sobre la vacuna. ¿Será efi-caz? ¿Habrá efectos deletéreos? Hay mucho que la cien-cia no sabe todavía. No obstante, me siento seguro que la vacuna nos ayudará para salir de la pandemia – tanto a nivel personal como a nivel de la sociedad entera. Mu-chas personas están preguntando si es moralmente aceptable vacunarse. Otras están diciendo que tiene que ser obligatorio. Yo creo que cada persona tiene que in-formarse y llegar a una decisión propia, tomando en cuenta la necesidad de proteger la propia salud y tam-bién la de las personas en su entorno. Hay una duda en particular sobre la moral del desarrollo de la vacuna. Las empresas farmacéuticas admiten que utilizaban líneas celulares obtenidas de fetos abortados, o en el desarro-llo de la vacuna o en las pruebas hechas sobre ella. Este hecho es triste y preocupante para nosotros que recono-cemos que la vida de cada persona es sagrada y tene-mos que denunciar y oponernos firmemente a esta práctica. Tal indiferencia al respeto de la vida de nues-tros hermanos inspira rechazo en las mentes de todos los que estamos a favor de la vida. Este sentimiento noble nos ayuda a recordar que tenemos que oponernos siempre a los que buscan promover la matanza de seres humanos, lo cual llega a ser cada día más frecuente y aceptable en nuestra sociedad. Hace unos dos años es-casos el gobierno de nuestro estado proclamaba el aborto procurado como derecho humano, lo cual quiere decir que oponerse al aborto será una violación de los derechos de las personas. Podemos pensar que en un futuro no lejano seremos adjudicados como culpables si expresamos nuestra oposición a el pecado gravísimo del aborto. En cuanto a la vacuna contra el coronavirus, sí estuvo mal utilizar células tomadas de niños abortados para desarrollarla. Sin embargo, lo que aprendimos de los trabajos y estudios no se puede negar. Aceptar la vacuna no equivale a la aceptación de los métodos in-justos empleados durante ciertas etapas de su desarro-llo. Lo hubieran hecho de otra manera para llegar al mismo descubrimiento de la vacuna. Los mejores mora-listas, personas en que yo confío, me han ayudado en-tender que el aceptar la vacuna no significa necesaria-mente el dar consentimiento a los métodos no morales. Year of St. Joseph 8 December 2020-2021

The gift of the Indulgences that the Apos-tolic Penitentiary kindly bestows during the Year of Saint Joseph, through this Decree issued according to Pope Francis’ wish, will contribute greatly to the perfect accom-plishment of the designated purpose.

The Plenary Indulgence is granted under the customary conditions (sacramental con-fession, Eucharistic communion and prayers according to the Holy Father’s intentions) to the faithful who, with a soul detached from any sin, shall participate in the Year of Saint Joseph, in the occasions and with the modal-ities indicated by this Apostolic Penitentiary.

Several ways to gain an indulgence in the Year of St. Joseph.

♦ Meditate on the prayer of the ‘Our Father’ for at least 30 minutes.

♦ Take part in a spiritual retreat of at least one day that includes a meditation on St. Joseph.

♦ Families and engaged couples who recite the rosary together and thus imitate the “same climate of communion, love and

prayer lived in the Holy Family”.

♦ Acts of devotion, including entrusting one’s daily activities and prayers for dignified employment to St. Joseph, or reciting the litany or any “legitimately approved” prayer to St. Joseph.

Also, during this time of pandemic, the gift of the Plenary Indulgence extends particularly to the elderly, the sick, the suffering and all those who for legitimate reasons are unable to leave the house, and who with a soul detached from any sin and with the intention to fulfil, as soon as possible, the three customary conditions in their own home or wherever the impediment detains them, shall recite an act of piety in honour of Saint Joseph, Comfort of the Sick and Patron of a Happy Death, faithfully offering to God their suf-fering and the hardships of their life. The virtue of justice practiced by Saint Joseph in an exemplary manner is full adherence to divine law, which is the law of mercy, “for it is the very mercy of God that brings true justice to fulfil-ment”[2]. Therefore those who, after the example of Saint Joseph, shall fulfil a work of corporal or spiritual work of mercy, will likewise be able to at-tain the gift of the Plenary Indulgence.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Available to Borrow from the Library Saint Lydwine of Schiedam Lydwine was born in Schiedam, Holland in 1380 during the Great Schism, a time when the Church split by the pres-ence of two antipopes. At the age of 15 she was ice skat-ing when she fell, broke a rib and became bed-ridden. She never recovered and became progressively disabled for the rest of her life. Her mysterious illness, at first thought to be of natural causes, was soon discovered to have supernatural origins. According to the revelations of Anne Catherine Emmerich, she was suffering voluntary expiation for the welfare of the Church. Her condition be-came so bad that at one time she had virtually come apart into three pieces, her body symbolically reflecting the con-dition of the Church. Besides eating no food, Lydwine was often wrapped in ecstasy and manifested numerous phe-nomena typical of mystics, most noticeable of which was a strong and delectable perfume. Her incredible story makes fascinating and inspiring reading and is ranked as one of the most heroic victim souls of all time.

FEAST OF FAITH - The Penitential Rite Standing together in the presence of the Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins and faults and failings. But the penitential rite is really less about our sins than it is about God’s mercy. It is not a time for individual confession, like a mini-sacrament of reconciliation. It is, rather, a preparatory rite, preparing us to praise the mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses the miraculous catch of fish—when he realizes who is in the boat with him—he falls at Jesus’ feet with the words, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more aware of the Lord’s presence we become, the more awareness we also have of our sinfulness, our weakness. The penitential rite of the Mass takes several forms, from the traditional Confiteor or “I confess” to a litany, spoken or sung by the deacon or cantor with responses by the entire assembly. The penitential rite always includes the words Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison—Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. This ancient Greek prayer came to the Roman liturgy from the East, and still echoes in many of the litanies of the Eastern Rite Churches.
