Spelling

■ Weekly spelling words with vocabulary building activities.

■ Emphasis on Greek & Latin roots■ Weekly spelling tests

Writing■ There are extensive opportunities

for students to write in Social Studies/Language Arts, as well as other subject areas.

■ Lucy Calkins and Write from the Beginning – Thinking Maps

■ We will assess on three types of writing:■ Personal Narrative■ Informative■ Persuasive/Argument

Accelerated Reader-AR

■ All 5th Grade students will be participating in the AR program this year.

■ AR consists of reading books and taking short comprehension tests on the computer.

■ Each month we will conference individually with students to update their AR Goal.

■ We would like students reading at their “just right” book level and to achieve 80% or higher on tests.

■ Your child can test on books read aloud by a parent or teacher to help them attain their goals.

■ Typically 10 AR points per month –

100/year■ 20 minutes of reading each

night

There will be an ice cream sundae party in early June for students who achieve their individual reading goal!
