Welcome to Advanced Math Grade 5
Ms. Polly Mitchell
Education: B.S.Ed from Ohio University
Masters in Education from John Carroll University
Experience: 21 years teaching experience with Chagrin Falls - Intermediate School/Middle School mathematics.
Personal: I have a son who is 2 years old. My family spends much of our time relaxing, traveling and fixing up the house. I enjoy running, gardening and reading.
Big Picture:The Advanced 5th Grade Math class is fast moving. Our goals for the year is to finish the 5th grade curriculum(Bridges K-5) and get through the entire 6th grade curriculum(CPM 6-12). Students will be taking the 6th grade AIR test in the spring.
If the students have a successful year, they will be moving to Advanced Applications in 6th grade that covers both Grade 7 and 8 Mathematics. They will go on to take Algebra as a 7th grader.

Components of the K-5 Math Program A. Number Corner: 15 minutes per day focused
around the calendarB. Bridges in Mathematics: the core structure for
mathematics (usually 50-80 minutes per day) - provides rigorous, coherent, engaging and accessible instruction to all learners
C. Bridges Intervention: resource designed for students needing mathematics intervention - organized by topic, rather than grade level
Number Corner (All Students)
● Features short daily workouts ● Introduces, reinforces, and extends skills and concepts
related to the critical areas of study at each grade ● New pieces are added to the calendar display each day,
providing starting points for discussions, problem solving, and short written exercises

Calendar Grid
Patterns that introduce and reinforce a variety of key number and geometry skills. Grades K–5
Bridges in Mathematics (All students)● Features a combination of whole-group, small-group, and
independent activities● Lessons incorporate increasingly complex visual models -
seeing, touching, working with manipulatives, and sketching ideas
● Students are encouraged to explore, test, and justify their reasoning
Key Ideas in Bridges in Mathematics
● Inquiry Based
● Visual Models
● Mathematical Discourse
● Spiraling Concepts
Bridges in Mathematics Activities● Problems and Investigations- Whole-group activities
that also incorporate periods of independent or partner work
● Work Places- Engaging, developmentally appropriate math stations that offer ongoing practice with key skills
● Math Forums- Students discuss their solutions to and strategies for solving problems in nearly every Bridges lesson
What do families need to know?● Making mistakes is a natural part of learning. We
will persevere through solving problems, using many different strategies to make sense of mathematical concepts.
● There is a Home Connection Workbook that contains homework pages. As well as the Student Book that is used in class and as homework.
● There are rich parent resources including unit overviews, FAQs, games and activities online at:

CPM: Principles of the Course Design
► Problem-based lessons
► Collaborative student work in structured study teams
► Spaced learning-big ideas appear repeatedly and are interconnected throughout the course
12
CPM - Grade 6 Math (CC1 Textbook - Common Core Book #1)► Many students, if they are struggling (usually first time as
well), it is because they are taking shortcuts on their homework. Minimum of 15-20 minutes on homework. “20 Minute Challenge”
► Need to do(not necessarily complete) homework for understanding
► Need to focus on the content during class activities
► Ask for help/clarification in class.
► A lesson a day, move quickly. If homework in not finished, time to talk about in class.
Help is Available:► I am available to answer emails after
school hours. [email protected]
► In class
► Google Calendar/Google Classroom
► When students access their homework through their e-book, they can access homework help on every problem.
