Learning about promoting health for ALL … With Each Experience UNIQUE:

• 7 Weeks Long – Wk 1 Orientation + 6 Weeks of Clinical Practice in HUnit + Community

• 6 x 8-Hr Shifts – May be done as ½ Days in selected Programs

• Each student has own individual Schedule

NRSG 3242 Course Description:• Students will explore public health nursing

practice with a focus on concepts related to health promotion, disease prevention, harm reduction, and health surveillance.

• They will work collaboratively with Public Health Nurses (PHNs) to explore community-based care for child-bearing families and vulnerable populations, such as youth, Aboriginals, immigrants, and homeless people.

• Students will learn to work in partnership with clients and the health care team. They will focus on client as family, group/aggregate, population, and/or community.

NP6 PRAXIS Seminar • Note: This is a practice

course with a weekly seminar (3-hr PRAXIS on Tues @ 9 AM-12 PM)

• PRAXIS covers clinical practice in Public Health, Community Empowerment

& Maternal-Child/FBU • Praxis is part of Clinical

Practice, and like Clinical, attendance/participation is mandatory

• If students are ill during Clinical, safety for clients & staff is paramount

• Completion of hours is also critical for student success

• All attempts will be made to make up extra hours

NRSG 3242 Learning Outcomes:Students who successfully complete this course will have reliably demonstrated the ability to: • Apply nursing knowledge, public health science, & principles

of primary health care while engaging in relational caring practices

• Practice with a health promotion/empowerment & capacity building approach within the three levels of prevention – primary, secondary, tertiary

• Develop proficiency in therapeutic communication with & assessment of complex clients (families, groups/aggregates, communities & populations, e.g., Aboriginals)

• Integrate a commitment to public health values of social justice, equity, sustainable development, empowerment and community participation into practice
