FIRST READING Ecclesiasticus 15:16-21If you wish, you can keep the commandments, to behave faithfully is within your power. He has set fire and water before you; put out your hand to whichever you prefer. Man has life and death before him; whichever a man likes better will be given him. For vast is the wisdom of the Lord; he is almighty and all-seeing. His eyes are on those who fear him, he notes every action of man. He never commanded anyone to be godless, he has given no one permission to sin.

RESPONSORIAL PSALMPsalm 118:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord.

SECOND READING1 Corinthians 2:6-10We have a wisdom to offer those who have reached maturity: not a philosophy of our age, it is true, still less of the masters of our age, which are coming to their end. The hidden wisdom of God which we teach in our mysteries is the wisdom that God predestined to be for our glory before the ages began. It is a wisdom that none of the masters of this age have ever known, or they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory; we teach what scripture calls: the things that no eye has seen and no ear has heard, things beyond the mind of man, all that God has prepared for those who love him.

These are the very things that God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even the depths of God.

Therefore, the man who infringes even one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be considered the least in the kingdom of heaven; but the man who keeps them and teaches them will be considered great in the kingdom of heaven.

‘For I tell you, if your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Volunteers

SEM supplies volunteers to the Breakfast Club that is run at Seaford Second-ary College by Karen Michelbach, Pastoral Care Worker. The Club runs on Mondays and Fridays from 8am to 9am and volunteers set up food, chat with the participants and then tidy and pack up. All volunteers must complete an application form available from the Administrator and undergo a DCSI police check that the school organises and pays for. Retreat in Daily Life

Parishioners are invited to take part in a retreat in daily life over 4 weeks in

this Parish from 24th April to 20th May. It will be co-given by a visiting

Tertian Jesuit from Ireland and is based on the spiritual exercises developed

by the Jesuit founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola. More details will follow.

Help needed to roster for washing of the Alter cloths & Small items.

Originally 4 of us shared the year, rotating one month in turn,

but due to ill health the roster has dwindled to 2.

It usually entails, only one wash load per weekend, plus a bit of ironing no scrubbing boards needed!!

Catechumens, run by the Canossian Sisters. While Mimmina was being instructed, Bakhita felt drawn to the Catholic Church. She was baptized and confirmed in 1890, taking the name Josephine. When the Michielis returned from Africa and wanted to take Mimmina and Josephine back with them, Josephine refused to go. During the ensuing court case, the Canossian Sisters and the patriarch of Venice intervened on Josephine’s behalf. The judge concluded that since slavery was illegal in Italy, she had actually been free since 1885. Josephine entered the Institute of St Magdalene of Canossa in 1893 and made her profession three years later. She spent the rest of her life living in her religious community engaged in cooking, sewing and kindly welcoming visitors at the door. She soon became well loved by the children attending the sisters’ school and the local citizens. She once said, “Be good, love the Lord, pray for those who do not know God, for what a great grace it is to know God!” Josephine Bakhita died in 1947 and was canonized in 2000. Josephine Bakhita is honoured as the patron saint of Sudan and of all people who have been and are still being trafficked into slavery.

ST JOSEPHINE BAKHITAOn this weekend, following St Bakhita’s day on 8 February, the Bishops Commission for Pastoral Life and the Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans call on the Catholic community to raise awareness about human trafficking, particularly trafficking of children.Bakhita was born in Olgossa in the Darfur region of southern Sudan. At the age of seven she was kidnapped and sold into slavery where she was given the name Bakhita, which means fortunate. As a young girl, she was resold several times, until finally in 1883 she was sold to Callisto Legnani, Italian consul in Khartoum, Sudan. Two years later, he took his slave Bakhita to Italy and gave her to his friend Augusto Michieli. Bakhita became babysitter to Mimmina Michieli, whom she accompanied to Venice’s Institute of the
