What is Core Knowledge?

Core Knowledge is a “traditional”

approach to teaching with a

content-rich curriculum, which

continuously builds background

knowledge in students and

promotes critical thinking skills

and student engagement.

Core Knowledge

Lyles-Crouch has been an official Core Knowledge school since November 2009 and is one of only 10 schools in the country to have attained the status of Distinction from over 1,200 Core Knowledge schools. We are unique in that we are a public school, while most are private or charter schools.

🞂 Lyles-Crouch Traditional AcademySpecial recognition for outstanding content integration

across the subject areas and effective teaching practices.

We need to see the reading comprehension problem for what it primarily is–a knowledge problem. There

is no way around the need for children to gain broad general knowledge in order to gain broad general

proficiency in reading. —E. D. Hirsch, Jr.

The 3 C’s

•Coherent: what children are able to learn at any given

moment depends on what they already know—and,

equally important, that what they know is a function of

previous experience and teaching

•Cumulative: clear outline of content to be learned

grade by grade so that knowledge, language, and skills

build cumulatively from year to year

•Content Specific: Clearly specifies important

knowledge in language arts, history, geography, math,

science, and the fine arts—answering the question,

“What do our students need to know?”

Why Teach Core Knowledge

Core Knowledge provides students with a rich content vocabulary that enables them to comprehend and interpret historical and literary material. It has proven through research to bridge the “knowledge gap.”
