Adjusted Gross Income/Earned wages

Untaxed Income

Assets

For student income there is an income protection allowance of $6,130 for 2013-14 and the remaining amount is assessed at 50%.Dependent students must report any assets in their name. They do not receive an Asset Protection allowance. Their reported assts are assessed at 20% .17FOTWStudents dependency status:If all No responses, student is dependentIf Yes to any question, student is independentUnder limited special circumstances, student may submit electronic FAFSA without parental data. If there is a special circumstance, student will be instructed during online application process on how to proceed; documentation will be needed by Financial AidExamples of special circumstances: parents incarcerated, left home due to abusive environment, unable to locate and contact parents18The student is asked a series of 13 questions to determine if parental data is required. ( refer to paper FAFSA pg 9). Definition of Legal guardianship does not include your parents, even if they were appointed by a court to be your guardians. FOTW Data for parents of dependent studentsParents name, social security number, date of birth 19FOTWData for parents of dependent students:Are either parents a dislocated worker? Job loss, laid off, receiving unemployment, unlikely to return to previous occupation orDisplaced homemaker person who previously provided unpaid services to family & is no longer supported by spouse, is unemployed & is having trouble finding or upgrading employment. Documentation will be needed by Financial Aid Office20FOTWFinancial data for parents of dependent students:Tax filing status and return type already completed, will file, will not file1040, 1040A/EZ, foreign tax return wages, adjusted gross income, federal tax paid21Tax filing status is important for a number of reasons. It is One of the IRS Data Retrieval tools filtering questions. Must answer . Tells the Dept of Education if figures are estimated or actual. Return type is important because it will be used as a filter to determine whether or not the student qualifies for special processing formulas. Simplified formula applies to parents with an AGI of less than 50,000 and the Automatic Zero EFC formula applies when the annual income is 24,000 or less. In these cases, no student or parental asset information is required and therefor not a factor in the EFC calculation.

1040A or EZ if income is under 100,000 and dont itemize deductions , dont own business, no alimony

FOTW Financial data for parents of dependent students:Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for 2012Income earned from work

22AGI includes interest income, income earned from working, dividends, taxable refunds, alimony, capital gains and losses, rental income, taxable social security and pension distributions. Line 37 on 2012 tax return.

Income earned from work is Line 7 and Business income Line 12. Is found on W2 form and schedule C of federal tax return.

This is important on the

School InformationList a Pennsylvania school with the highest cost first; first college used by PHEAA Grant to determine state grantIf you are applying to more than six schools, wait for the processed Student Aid Report (SAR) and add additional schools via the Web Strategies for Listing Colleges

26Here are some tips for completing Section 5especially if you are applying for financial aid at more than six colleges or universities.

List the schools with the earliest financial aid deadlines, regardless of the state where the schools are located.

Make sure to include your first and second choice schools.

If you are applying to more than six schools, you can add additional schools when you receive your processed Student Aid Report (SAR). We strongly recommend that students sending their financial aid information to a large number of schools file using FAFSA on the Web and sign the form using PINs. This will make adding additional schools even easier and faster.

Financial aid is awarded by each individual campus. Therefore, students applying to more than one campus location of the same school should list each location separately in Section 8 of the FAFSA if the campus has its own federal school code.SignaturesRequiredStudentOne parent (dependent students)FormatElectronic using PINSignature pagePaper FAFSA27Frequent FAFSA ErrorsSocial Security NumbersDivorced/remarried parental informationIncome earned by parents/stepparentsUntaxed incomeU.S. income taxes paid *Real estate and investment net worthMissing signaturesParent income data in student section28*Line 55 1040, line 35 1040A, line10 1040EZIf you have unusual circumstances that might affect your financial situation complete the FAFSA to the extent you can then submit as instructed and contact FAO Making CorrectionsIf necessary, corrections to FAFSA data may be made by:

The EFC is determined by a federal formula and is an index used by the college , federal, and state government to determine need based aid eligibility. The EFC is not equivalent to out-of-pocket costs.33In theory the EFC is the amount the family is able to pay. In reality , and it is rarely the amount a family actually pays.EFC-Expected Family ContributionThe EFC stays same regardless of collegeThe EFC has two components:Parent contributionStudent contribution
