TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The fact that many monastic churches do not have a prominent tabernacle shapes the patterns of liturgical prayer. Monastic communities often protect the ancient value of “receiving from the same sacrifice,” meaning that the communicants are assured that what they eat and drink in the Holy Mysteries actually comes from the same celebration. It surprises many to learn that the Church does not foresee, nor does it provide for, Communion of the faithful from the reserved Sacrament. Liturgical laws have long defended your right to receive from the same sacrifice, the same Mass, that you attend. At one time, of course, the bread for the Eucharist was the ordinary bread of the day, except unleavened, probably prepared at home. It was broken and distributed to the faithful. Early on the loaf itself was referred to as the hostia in Latin, meaning the “sacrifice,” the same word for the sacrificial animal in Jewish worship, and for Jesus as the Lamb of God. By giving his life on the cross, Jesus became the hostia for us. To this day in the Greek Church, one of the tasks of the priest’s wife is to bake the bread for the Divine Liturgy, sometimes in a bakery oven dedicated to that purpose and called a “Bethlehem.” Today’s familiar individual hosts first appeared in the eleventh century at about the time when tabernacles were coming into use. The turn away from “bready” bread allowed the hosts to be reserved since they did not spoil like regular bread, and made the annual “Easter duty” counts easier. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. AREA EVENTS & HAPPENINGS

NOVENA - A Novena is a tradition of praying a certain prayer(s) for nine days. Its origin dates back to the nine days that the Apostles and Mary spent together in prayer between the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven and the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. This novena was first prayed at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent the Apostles back to Jerusalem to pray and wait “until you are clothed with power from on high” by the coming of the third Person of the Blessed Trinity. (Luke 24:49) DONATE TO PROJECT MILK - The most recent “Project Milk” shipment arrived at our diocesan orphanage, Casa Hogar, in Peru just before deadly floods devastated parts of the country. This shipment of 40,000 lbs of nonfat powdered dry milk (purchased from Wisconsin dairy farmers, thanks to your donations) was shared with about 20 other orphanages around Lima, as well as flood victims, reaching thousands. There is still need for more milk. Visitwww.diolc.org/project-milk to learn more and to see how your donation can help us send another shipment soon!

Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence opportunity for the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions throughout the centennial year, from the 27th of November 2016 till the 26th of November 2017. There are three ways to obtain the indulgence, detailed in a statement from the Fatima Shrine in Portugal (see below). To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful must also fulfill the ordinary conditions: go to Confession and Communion, be interiorly detached from sin, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. Make a pilgrimage to the shrine To the faithful who make a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal and participate in a celebration of prayer dedicated to the Virgin. In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke the Mother of God. Pray before any statue of Our Lady of Fatima To the faithful who visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration in any church, oratory or proper place during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May to October 2017, and there devoutly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima. The elderly and infirm To the faithful who, because of age, illness or other serious cause, are unable to get around, may pray in front of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and must spiritually unite themselves to the jubilee celebrations on the days of the apparitions, the 13th of each month, between May and October 2017. They must also “offer to merciful God with confidence, through Mary, their prayers and sufferings or the sacrifices they make in their own lives.”
