A Message from Deacon Bruce…
Seek That One Thing
Winter is here. It’s that time of year when many of us shut ourselves away from the world and venture out only when we need to. Easy to do. It’s also a time of year when so many people are in need. Maybe they have trouble paying their heating bills or, worse yet, maybe
they have no place to live. Cold and flu season also enter into the picture. It’s a time when we have a choice to make. Should we turn on our electric blankets at night and curl up in our cocoons, oblivious to the world outside, or is it a time to heighten our awareness about our brothers and sisters who are suffering all around us? I have often asked, “Where are all those people who supposedly live under the Appleton bridges? I don’t see them. Is homelessness really a problem here?” Then I saw. They are here, all around us. They may be hidden from our sight unless we are one of the many generous people who help out at St. Vincent de Paul or work at one of the area shelters. Then we see them. We hear them. It is then that we believe.
Jesus tells us in our Gospel today that “what we did not do for these least ones, we did not do for him.” We must take these words seriously and analyze our lives, especially at this time, in this cold, in this economy.
If you are looking for a ministry where you can help those in need, there are many places to get started. Perhaps jail ministry, visiting the men and women who suffer in our local jails and prisons. We don’t have a jail ministry here at the parish, but it is a crucial ministry. Maybe it’s helping at St. Vincent de Paul or joining the parish Care Ministry, visiting nursing homes and hospitals. People need our help everywhere. It doesn’t really matter what we do, but it does matter that we “do something for the least of these.”
I hope you will find a ministry this winter that touches your heart. If you feel called to do something for that “other person,” that person you’ve never met, call the rectory. I can put you in touch with a program where you can help.
What if we all did just one thing? Seek that one thing.
Deacon Bruce
“Love Lights”
Kaukauna Community Health Associates (KCHA) will again sponsor the Love Lights Christmas Tree Fundraiser at the Kaukauna Public Library. The cost of each paper bird ornament hung on the tree in memory/honor of your loved one or friend is $3.00. Red paper cardinals represent the living; white dove ornaments represent deceased loved
ones. If someone is serving, or has served, in the armed forces, we will honor them with a flag on their ornament; someone who has battled, or is battling, cancer will have a pink ribbon attached; a gold star indicates a special person who has come to your aid in a time of need. Forms are at the library and at various city businesses. Send requests and donations to KCHA, PO Box 534, Kaukauna, WI 54130. Ornaments will be on the tree December 5-20. All proceeds are used in health-related areas in our community and schools.
Lighting of the Love Lights Tree is Friday, December 5,
at 5:00 pm, with entertainment provided by the Kaukauna High School Jazz Choir. Take time to enjoy this special ceremony, and make it part of your Advent Season.

What We Do For Others, We Do For God
“…as you did it to one of the least of my brethren, you did it
to me.” – Matthew 25:40
Most of us are generous when it’s convenient for us. We are generous when we have time or
money, but generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one’s time, money, compassion, forgiveness, mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.

The Processional Cross - Did You Know?
Last Sunday, I was at the Hispanic Mass at St. Therese Parish in Appleton. It was a beautiful Misa even though I didn’t understand very much. Because the Catholic Mass is the same at every church in the world I, of course, knew where we were in the liturgy. Yes, it was beautiful.
Even though I didn’t understand the words, there was one non-verbal that I understood very quickly. That one thing was the reverence for the cross. As the opening song began, I faced the front like I usually do. I listened to the words that were being sung in Spanish. As I looked up, I suddenly realized that I was the only one facing the front. The assembly was completely turned to face the back of the Church. I didn’t know what they were looking at, but then I saw the crucified Jesus coming down the aisle on the processional cross. Wow! I stood there in awe as Jesus passed each pew. I watched as the people reverently bowed their heads as Jesus passed.
I thought about that for quite some time. Then another thought occurred to me. When I attend a wedding, the assembly turns to face the back of the church when the processional music begins and the bride enters with her father. It is an important moment in the wedding, isn’t it? It should, in fact, be a high point of every Mass.
When the processional music begins, let us completely turn our bodies to watch as Jesus enters the Church. Let us bow our heads in reverence as he passes by, and again as He leads us out of the Church after Mass.
When I was young, I was taught by my mom and dad to never leave the Church until the priest leaves. I still follow that instruction today but, as of last week, I know that it is the cross that is leading us out of Church and back into the world to spread the Good News! We are now armed with the Eucharist to give us courage and strength for another week or another day (if we attend daily Mass).
If you’ve noticed, Fr. Tom and Deacon Bruce and Deacon Mark pause at the altar steps and bow their heads as the cross leaves the sanctuary and moves down the aisle after Mass. It’s really special to watch them show that reverence.
I learned something beautiful last Sunday at St. Therese Church, and I don’t think I’ll ever look at a processional cross in the same way again.
If we can turn to look at the bride, we can certainly turn to look at Jesus. After all, He is the King! Happy Feast Day!
