Counselors’ Hours

• 7:30am-3:30pm, Mon.-Thurs. from June 20-July 14, CLOSED Fridays EXCEPT FOR July 8 (open regular hours) and CLOSED 7/4

• Concert nights- Wed. June 29 & July 13 from 6:30-9pm.

• Please be on time; we are counting on you! • If you know you will be out, please leave Ms. Nicole

a written note 1 week in advance so we can cover you. Thanks!

Attire• Since we are housed in a school

facility, School Board of Broward County Rules apply.

• Please wear camp shirts at orientation, recitals & concerts.

• Feel free to dress as appropriate on Spirit Days.

Bring/Don’t Bring:

BRING:•A professional, helpful , ready-to-learn attitude;

•Smiles; •Bag lunch w/drink;•Snacks (or $$ to buy);

•Your instrument if desired;

•School volunteer log sheets (more later).

DO NOT BRING- •inappropriate music CD’s;

•video games; •personal headphones;•Inappropriate language;

•Foolish or distracting behavior;

•anything not approved for school except cell phones (turn off during camp)

Snacks

• Snacks are priced as marked, ranging from $.75 to $1.

• Head counselors will run snack bar each day.

• Once snack bar is closed, it is CLOSED! No exceptions.

Counselor Duties• Room preparation & maintenance• Instructor assistance• Age Group Supervision (snacks, lunch, games, tutti time,

etc.);• Daily Clean-up- garbage, sweeping, mopping, table

washing, (lottery)• Stage, Costumes, & Props;• Assist Backstage at recitals & finale concerts;• Parking/ greeter• Choreography, sign-making & whatever needs doing.

Traveling Counselors are assigned to one group of

campers & help that group in all areas:

labs:• Woodwinds- • Percussion- • Strings- • Singing- • Keyboard-

Lunch

• Bring a bag lunch and drink. • Microwave and fridge is for instructor/admin. use only. • All age groups eat in Woodwinds Lab w/ Ms. Delisa &

Mr. Henschel. • Supervise your age group where they are.

– Open drinks, Spread out, etc. – Make sure campers clean up all trash and spills.

• After lunch, take your group to restrooms & encourage all to use facilities.

• Pizza Thursdays (or Fri. 7/8)- Campers prepay for pizza at orientation.

• Pizza is ordered by Admin. Asst. from Papa John’s at 954-345-7272 the day before or by 10:15am.

• Last year’s price was $6 per pie. • Counselors get free pizza as a thank you for

your help! :-)

Daily Schedule & Calendar

• See Daily Schedule (posted on all camp doors) to be followed both sessions.

• Please do your very best to run ON TIME, especially from LUNCH! Thanks.

• Check the posted Calendar under “Announcements” (just inside Woodwinds Lab check-in door) for special events.

Safety & Security

• BADGES. All camp staff & volunteers MUST wear identity badges at all times, including finale concerts and recitals. Badges should remain at camp. Do not get them wet.

• PARKING GREETERS. 8 Volunteers per session (2 in the morning & 2 in the afternoon, new group for week 2) are needed to stand by the fire lane each morning and welcome campers. Remind everyone not to park in the Fire Lanes. Make sure signs stay up.

Safety & Security

• NEVER UNATTENDED. Children are never to be left unattended... PERIOD.

• Always accompany them, 3 in a group. • For safety & security reasons, campers are

not permitted in camp rooms without an instructor OR 2 counselors present.

• CHECK RESTROOMS. Counselors must check restrooms for hazards before sending in campers.

• REPORT STRANGERS. Report any strange people to Ms. Nicole immediately.

• SCHOOL TELEPHONES. Phones in camp rooms have been labeled with the numbers of the other camp rooms; please call Ms. Nicole if there is a problem. Avoid calling the school office (x2002) except in cases of emergency.

Safety & Security- cont.

• HIDE VALUABLES. All MusicMakers! rooms will remain unlocked, so leave your valuables well hidden.

• SECURE CLEANING MATERIALS. Store all cleaning materials out of campers’ reach, including rags, sprays, mops, vacuums, brooms, etc.

• COMMON SENSE. Two counselors of the opposite sex should not be alone in a room together.

Emergency Procedures

• FIRE DRILL. exit portables & follow your room’s exit plan. Check it when you get in your Lab. Account for all your children & call Ms. Nicole to say you are OK. Wait for all-clear to reenter rooms.

• SEVERE WEATHER. Light to medium rain means umbrellas; lightning & strong winds mean stay put. If severe weather interferes with changing rooms on time, stay put until Ms. Nicole gives the all-clear;

Emergency Procedures

• CAMPER ILLNESS. If a child is ill or needs a band-aid, take them to the Office, where Admin. Asst. will assist or call parents. Be sure child isn’t just bored or wanting attention and has a real issue. Always use medical gloves when dealing with cuts or bodily fluids. Always let other counselors know before leaving your area.

• CALL or text IN CASE OF EMERGENCY. Program Ms. Nicole’s cell# 954-868-5515 into your cell phone NOW.

Emergency Procedures

• MEDICAL EMERGENCY. If a child has a serious medical emergency such as a severe allergic reaction, seizure, choking, diabetic coma, etc., 1- call 911 immediately, THEN 2- notify an instructor, and THIRD, 3- offer assistance until help arrives.

Interacting With Campers

• LEARN NAMES in your group ASAP. • SET A GOOD EXAMPLE in speech, action, &

attitude. Monkey see, monkey do. • FOLLOW YOUR AGE GROUP or stay in your lab

as a teaching assistant. • ASSIST THE INSTRUCTOR. Once kids have a task,

assist them as best you can. LEARN how to help. • Do not tap on instruments, talk, take phone

calls, text, or cause any distractions during instructional time.

Interacting With Campers

• AVOID PHYSICAL CONTACT. Avoid physical contact with campers & other counselors, I.E.: full-body hugs & lap sitting. High 5’s & handshakes are acceptable.

• REINFORCE CAMP RULES, which are: “CPR” (Cooperate, Participate, Respect).

• REDIRECT TWICE; 3RD TIME TELL AN INSTRUCTOR, If punishment is necessary, LET AN INSTRUCTOR ADMINISTER IT.

Respect. • ENCOURAGE COOPERATION. Be sure campers play fair.

Separate children who are not getting along. If you ask children to do something & they refuse, retell them. If they still refuse, tell an instructor.

• ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION. Include children who are shy in group games or find a kindhearted buddy for them.

• ENCOURAGE RESPECT. Do not allow bullying, unkind remarks, put-downs, defiance, or gossip, to occur. Practice mutual respect; what goes around, comes around; do unto others… This applies among counselors and instructors as well as campers!!!

Campers & Camp Rules

• THINK BEFORE YOU ACT. – Avoid arguing with campers; – See an instructor if you have a problem; – Refer severe infractions like fighting, bullying, foul

language, theft, threats, etc. to an instructor; – Do not make decisions when angry.

• PARENT HANDBOOK. Read the Parent Handbook section on Camp Discipline Policy.

Interacting With Parents• PARENTS & CAMPERS ARE

CUSTOMERS. Be polite and friendly. • KNOW THE NEWS OR WHERE TO

FIND IT. Know what Spirit Day is next, when costume check day is, what the costumes are supposed to be, when recitals & finale concerts are, & what times, etc. (it’s ALL posted on walls by sign-in desk in Woodwinds Lab).

Interacting With Parents

• ASK IF YOU DON’T KNOW.. Be honest and say, “I don’t know the answer to that, but you could ask _____.”

• SHOW COURTESY. PARENTS decide if their child returns tomorrow & next summer, so BE NICE when they ask the same question someone else just asked.

Orientation Thurs. 3:30-5:30

• Be sure Labs are clean, neat, & attractive by 3pm.

• Turn on background music if possible.• Make sure boards say “WELCOME!” • Direct people to Strings Lab for Orientation . • Please choose 1 of the following:

Folder Greeters’ Check-in Script 1. Emergency folders must be completed & LEFT HERE; Double-

check your info is correct, complete anything missing, & return folder to me.

2. (Hand parent a Handbook) Please read the Handbook thoroughly for camp policies.

3. If a child’s group placement is incorrect, please complete a Group Change Request form and Ms. Nicole will make needed adjustments ASAP.

4. Please pay your registration and other fees before taking your tour. Read form carefully, put money in envelope, seal, and return to me. Thanks and we’ll see you on Day 1!

Day 1 Procedures• 1st- Beginning at 7:45am, Campers get nametags outside

portables from Arielle & Nicole N.• 2nd- Parents drop children off and they go to Wdwinds

Lab. • 3rd- Campers choose a seat within their group’s number

range, sit down, & stow their stuff. Counselors assist so friends end up together. Parents leave.

• At 8am, Ms. Nicole introduces staff and goes over rules and important info.

Each morning @ 7:30am:

• Update announcements – Heather & Ms. Nicole

• Straighten games- Jr. Counselors + Savannah & Elizabeth H.

• File camp forms in folders, ask for missing forms daily at check-in- Admin.

• Straighten Labs (chairs, stands, folders, instruments; trash; general neatness, & sweeping )- all counselors

Morning Sessions

• Assist your instructor however needed, including: 1. one-on-one help for campers; 2. errands; 3. sign making; 4. demonstrations, etc.

• For safety & liability reasons, do not leave your area without your instructor’s knowledge.

• Return phone &/or text messages during lunch/ breaks only.

Morning Snack Break

1st- BATHROOM 2nd- SNACK 3rd- GAMES

• 2 Woodwinds counselors - Pre-pour & pre-serve snacks in cups & napkins so they are ready when campers walk in.

• All other counselors- take groups to the restrooms. Ms. Delisa & Mr. Henschel go too. Be sure kids wash hands.

Morning Snack Break

• OUTSIDE GAMES are organized by Jr. Counselors/Hunter.

• CLEAN-UP. Counselors make sure campers put away all trash, games & pieces of games EVERY DAY. At the end of the day, if it’s dirty, Counselors will end up cleaning it up…

• SUPPLIES- CRITICAL!!!- Tell Ms. Nicole if we are going to run out of ANYTHING at least 2 days ahead.

Afternoon Sessions

• See separate schedule

• Woodwinds Lab should be thoroughly cleaned during Tutti Time. (lottery for sweeping, mop, table washing, garbage)

• Head counselors are exempt from lottery b/c they service their own rooms already.

Tutti Time• PARTICIPATE IN THE REHEARSAL. • Sing, act, move, etc. as you are part

of the cast this year…• Or choose a backstage role to be

discussed at a later staff meeting.

End of DayLaboratories- Head Counselors- • TRASH. Take trash to dumpster. • CLEAN. Sweep floors, spot mop as needed.

Keep all neat & hazard-free.• SET UP for next day.

Sign-Out

• SUPERVISE. Once Labs are clean, supervise in Woodwinds Lab.

• REROUTE WRONG TRAFFIC. Make sure parents follow the traffic plan- no back door entries/ front door exits.

• FIRE LANE/GREETERS. Parking/ greeters go out and SMILE when you remind parents not to park in the Fire Lanes, for the safety of their children.

• Heather & Danny will have clipboards outside the Woodwinds door, and Delisa will call names as parents arrive

Recorder & Precorder Sale

• PREPAID ORDERS. Parents pay at orientation. Orders are filled during Woodwinds sessions by Woodwinds counselors.

• FREE NAME ENGRAVING is done during Woodwinds time also.

• RECORDER & STUDY BOOK PROCEEDS are kept in the blue pouch pocket labeled “Recorders”.

Service Hours• MUSICMAKERS! SUMMER CAMP is your place of

employment on your preapproval sheet. Please take a copy of the non-profit letter if you go to Douglas HS so they will award you hours.

• “TEACHERS’ ASST./STUDENT SUPERVISION” is your duties/activity.

• SIGN IN/OUT DAILY IN CAMP VOLUNTEER LOG BOOK in the camp office.

• VOLUNTEER LOG SHEETS from your school should be brought with you daily.

OUR INSTRUCTORSAll instructors are experienced music educators with over

60 years combined experience in the field. Ms. Nicole & Mr. Henschel are National Board Certified

in Early/Middle Childhood Music. Ms. Nicole was the 2008 Broward County Arts Teacher of

the Year, as award open to all public & private school arts teachers in Broward County. She was also runner up for 2006 Broward County Teacher of the Year.

CAMPER ATTIRE

• ATTIRE. Play clothes & sneakers or Spirit Contest attire- follow School Board Policies.

• NO open-toed shoes, torn T-shirts, shirts with inappropriate logos, or jewelry of any type to camp.

• SPIRIT DAYS. Please encourage your camper to dress up for Blast From the Past Day, Pajama Day, Bad Hair Day, etc.. While not mandatory, these days add fun & pizzazz to the camp experience!

CAMPER ATTIRE

• NO VALUABLES. Please do not allow your child to bring valuables to camp.

• LABEL IT WITH YOUR NAME. Put your child’s name on everything he/she brings to camp, including towels, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc. Thank You!

MORNING DROP-OFF/SIGN-IN:

• 7:45AM STARTS SIGN-IN. • DRIVE-BY DROP-OFF. For parent convenience, from

7:45-8am, students may be dropped off in front of the Strings Lab daily; counselors will greet you each morning. Parents must initial the clipboard by their child’s name. Please drive to the back of the parking lot to turn around.

• BE ON TIME. Supervision is not available before 7:45am and classes start at 8:05am, ... so please arrive on time.

MORNING DROP-OFF & SIGN-IN:

• STOW YOUR STUFF BY 8:00. Campers should store lunches & recorders in the Woodwinds Lab before going to their first session.

• LATE CAMPERS will need to be signed in in the office by parents, and should join their group when they arrive.

MORNING DROP-OFF & SIGN-IN:

• PLEASE CALL IN ILLNESS & ABSENCES. If your child is ill or cannot attend camp on a given day, please call Ms. Nicole at 954-868-5515 so she doesn’t worry. Thanks!

AFTERNOON PICK-UP:• 3:00PM STARTS PICKUP. Parents, please park and

come pick up your child in the Woodwinds Lab each afternoon. Initial the clipboards.

• TRANSPORTATION DESIGNEE FORM is due by Day 1 only if someone other than the legal guardian will transport child to/from camp.

• PHOTO ID AT PICKUP. Until we get to know you, parent or designee must show photo ID at pickup time. Designees’ name must be on child’s Transportation form or child will not be released.

AFTERNOON PICK-UP:• NO PARKING IN FIRE LANES. Avoid tickets

& towing. Park in the back/on side of the school.

• PARENTS, ACCOMPANY YOUR CAMPERS. Walk to the camp area to get your child. Children are not permitted to leave the camp area without an approved adult.

AFTERNOON PICK-UP:• LATE PICK-UP FEES: No charge 1st time after

3:15pm. $5.00 per 10-minute interval per child late fee charged thereafter, due in cash or check at pick-up time.

• TELL US YOU’LL BE LATE. Please see a staff member prior to an event if you have special circumstances & know you will be late. We have families too, but we are happy to work with you & we appreciate your help in this area. Thanks!

LUNCH

• BRING LUNCH every day (except Thursdays for those wishing to participate in Pizza Day). Also bring a water bottle if desired.

• STOW IN WOODWINDS LAB BY 8:00AM in your desk.

• Campers eat lunch for 40 MINUTES DAILY.• PIZZA DAY is every Thursday. Pizza lunch may

be prepaid at orientation for $7 per session, which includes 2 Thursday lunches with drink and 2 slices pizza.

SNACKS:

• MORNING SNACK & DRINK PROVIDED. (cookies, chips, crackers, water or punch.)

• AFTERNOON SNACKS & DRINKS NOT PROVIDED. A variety of snacks are available for $.75 to $1 each from our snack box. Water is also available.

CAMP DISCIPLINARY POLICY:

Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior-1st Offense: Time out 2 minutes; 2nd Offense: Time out 5-10 minutes

depending on offense. Parents informed at pick-up time.

3rd Offense: Indefinite Time Out or switch to another group; parents informed at pick-up time or called if offense warrants.

CAMP DISCIPLINARY POLICY:

• 4th, Chronic, or Severe Offense: Parents called immediately; child suspended. Length of suspension to be determined by Camp Director.

• Steps may be skipped if the offense should warrant. Children who do not attempt to improve behavior will be suspended for the duration of the session without refund.

CAMP DISCIPLINARY POLICY:

Rewards• Besides having a lot of fun, campers may receive

certificates of achievement, special instrument or outside game privileges, treats, photo opportunities, or various other positive reinforcements for outstanding

behavior. • Prizes are awarded for Spirit Day Contests.

ILLNESS/EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

• FEVER FREE 24 HOURS. Kids must be FEVER FREE for 24 hours before returning to camp.

• UPDATE EMERGENCY NUMBERS/ LIST ALLERGIES & MEDICATIONS. At orientation, correct emergency numbers & list allergies & medications on your camper’s registration form.

• IF CHILD BECOMES ILL AT CAMP, Sick kids will be sent home, 1st we call home phone, 2nd work numbers & 3rd emergency contact numbers.

ILLNESS/EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

• SERIOUS EMERGENCY/ 911. In severe situations, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will be called & will take whatever steps they deem necessary.

• CPR CERTIFIED STAFF. Several MusicMakers! staff members are certified in CPR and will administer appropriate treatment until EMS arrives.

MEDICATIONS:

• CAMP STAFF IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO DISPENSE ANY MEDICATIONS INCLUDING ASPIRIN.

• SELF-ADMINISTRATION. Children who must take medication during camp hours must be able to do so on their own. Camp staff is not responsible for reminding campers to take their medications.

• SAFE HOUSING. Ms. Nicole or Admin. Asst. must be custodian of all medications so others do not acquire/misuse them.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

• DAILY SCHEDULE. Campers follow a daily schedule of activities.

• REST ROOMS are used at designated times except in cases of emergency, at which time camp personnel will escort your child to the restroom.

• LEAVE MESSAGE. Camp Administration will inform your child. Messages are checked continuously.

Contacting Campers:• EMERGENCIES. If you can’t get

through on the camp number, call the City of Coral Springs Parks & Recreation Department at (954) 345-2200 & they will relay your message to the Camp Director. Do not call the school directly; they do not accept camp related calls.

• COSTUMES: Campers need to acquire costumes for finale concerts by Week 2 Monday (June 28 or July 12).

• COSTUME CHECK DAY IS WEEK 2 MONDAY. Please send all necessary items to camp in a bag with your child’s name on it on June 28 &/or July 12. Items will be checked during the day.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

• MAKE COSTUME CORRECTIONS & RESEND TUESDAY. You will receive a note if your child is missing items or needs to change them. Please fix these Monday night & resend items on Tues. for re-checks. Thanks!

• CLOSED FRIDAYS: MusicMakers! will be closed on Fridays in 2011 due to school budget constraints. We are also closed Mon. July 4 for Independence Day, but open Fri. 7/8. See Calendar for a complete schedule of camp hours.

• NO GUM/TOYS/VALUABLES: PLEASE- do not send gum, toys, games, radios or excess $.
