The Church of St. Luke is a Catholic Community, centered in Christ through baptism and formed by the Eucharist. We strive to always be a community where every heart is touched by our Christian fellowship.

P A S T O R ’ S R E F L E C T I O N S 2

I feel like we skipped right over spring and now we are into summer. We went from cold to heat and humidity. I see this past week many of you did some spring cleaning and brought items in for the Parish Garage Sale. I am always impressed how many people are lined up out front waiting for the doors to open. I have told a few people that I try and bring more to the sale, than I get from the sale. I would like to thank everyone who donated items for the sale. And a thank you to Marlene Imholte and all her helpers who always do an amazing job of setting up and checking out.

I often will wonder about the history of some of the things that come in for the Garage Sale. Five years ago I started playing chess with a friend when I was on medical leave. It was one of those NEW things when I was trying to get my mind working right again. As I got into it, I picked up a few books and a few different chess sets. I tend to go a little over board, one of my faults. You may have seen that there were some nice chess sets at the sale. Time to let them go! As I walked around looking at things, I could not help but thinking some of these items were gifts people received, some they may have bought and just don't use anymore, I know of a few people who were moving and downsizing.

Some times when someone dies, the history of an item dies with them. I have a set of pictures of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, that hang over my bed. I received these from my mother for my ordination. They were her mother's mother's wedding gift. It would be easy enough to only see them as old pictures, yet knowing the history, they mean more to me. When I make a rescue at an Antique store, I often wonder about my purchases, like the Baptismal Font, 1935 or the priest traveling wake kit, etc etc. I have heard stories of family members getting emotional over an ice cream scoop!

Yet the things that really matter the most are not things that will ever make it to a Garage Sale. A wonderful relationship with Jesus Christ. Faith is something that we should hold near and dear. The Love of a dear friend, someone who is always there for us when we need them. I remember when my mother passed and we had to go through her belongings, finding cards that I made in elementary school. 30 copies of a flyer for the Garage Sale we had to support me in seminary (Flyers for an event that took place 8 years earlier). Yet all of these were priceless treasures for my mother.

Faith in Jesus Christ is something my mother gave to me, that I am most grateful for. That relationship is most important to me. Faith is something that no one can take from us. It is only when we walk away from it, that we lose our faith. Something, we should never give up.

Blessings, Fr Backer

Page 3: WELCOME TO HE CHURCH OF - Amazon Web Services...Faith and Family Happy Father’ day! The role of the father in the home is to love, and nurture his children and to show his children

Faith and Family Happy Father’ day! The role of the father in the home is to love, and nurture his children and to show his children how much he loves God. Our society has done a disservice to the role of the father as the head of the house. Society has reduced the role of fathers to that as an extra parent that is placed on the level of the children. We read in scripture how important the father is in the family. Christ tells us in his word that the father is to be the head of the household as Christ is the head of the Church as we read 1Cor11:3. What this means is that it is the father who should be the leader with his wife to teach the children to know, love and serve the Lord with their whole heart, mind and strength. Ephesians 6:4 says: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Children look to their dads and will model what dad does so if you show them that you are a man of God by your prayer, word and deed, they too will come to know the Lord and the importance of a loving father. It takes perseverance in daily prayer and reading God’s word, regular Mass attendance and surrounding oneself with those who love the Lord so they have someone to hold them accountable to the Word of God. May God Bless you on this special day. “My father was a man of great charity towards the poor, and compassion for the sick, and also for servants; so much so, that he never could be persuaded to keep slaves, for he pitied them so much: and a slave belonging to one of his brothers being once in his house, was treated by him with as much tenderness as his own children.”- Saint Teresa of Avila
