► Marian Gould Gallagher served as the director of the Law Library for thirty-seven years, from 1944 to 1981. The Law Library was dedicated to her in 1981.

► The Gallagher Law Library is located on the lower two floors of William Gates Hall.

► To access the Library, go to the entrance of Gates Hall, located on Memorial Way, and walk down the stairs or take the elevator.

Reference office► The Reference Office,

located next to the Circulation Desk, is staffed by law librarians and law librarianship interns.

► The librarians and interns assist patrons in finding and using tools to help patrons with their legal research questions. Please remember that librarians and interns CANNOT give legal advice. More information about our Reference Services can be found here.

► The Reference Area is located behind the Circulation Desk and Reference Office.

► Books located in this area are recent editions with limited borrowing privileges. Please see our Circulation Policies for more information.

Classified Stacks

► The Classified Stacks are located behind the Reference Area and on the L2 floor.

► These books can be checked out by all of the Library’s patrons.

Copy Alcoves► The Library provides a

number of copy machines for its patrons. There are three copy alcoves: two on L1 and one on L2.

► Patrons who are not UW students must purchase a Dawg Card to make copies. These cards may be purchased in the Library at a dispenser in one of the copy alcoves. (Please see the Circulation staff for directions to the dispenser.) The machine accepts exact change only.

L2 Floor

► Besides the study space, this Floor contains some of our Classified Stacks and all of our Compact Stacks.

► The lower floor of the Library provides the best, most dramatic views of the Library’s distinctive skylights.

Compact Stacks

► Our Compact Stacks are electronically operated moveable stacks, holding approximately 60% of the Law Library's collection.

► In these Stacks, you can find: bound volumes of law reviews, regional reporters, old state reporters, treaty series, older volumes of the Congressional Record & the Federal Register, and court briefs.

UW Law School Class Pictures

►Across from the copy alcove on L2, the Library maintains pictures of the UW’s law school classes from 1902 to the present.

►A collection of our LLM students are also located here.

Legal Research Training Center (LRTC)

► The LRTC is located on the lower floor of the Library in Rooms L201 and L202. It is equipped with 24 desktop computers and two trainer's stations. This facility is used for hands-on research training in scheduled sessions.

► UW Law School faculty and staff may request training sessions by contacting the reference librarians at 3-6794.

Behind the Scenes

►Much of the work of the Library is done behind the scenes. The people in Technical Services work to keep our collection up-to-date.

Book Drop

► Patrons can return books even if the Library is not open. For the convenience of our patrons, the Library maintains two book drops outside of Gates Hall: At the main entrance of Gates Hall, the northeast corner of

the building near Memorial Way and At the northwest corner of the building near 15th Ave. NE
