WELCOME TO EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND
Edinburgh, or Dùn Èideann in Scottish Gaelic, is the capital city of Scotland. Located in Lothian on the Firth of Forth's southern
shore, it is Scotland's second most populous city and, with roughly 1.4 million inhabitants, the seventh most populous in the United
Kingdom. The city is the largest financial center in the UK after London. Edinburgh has long been a center of education, particularly
in the fields of medicine, Scots law, literature, the sciences and engineering. The city’s mild weather, beautiful surroundings, rich
history, and world-renowned festivals make it an attractive tourist destination, as well as a great place to live.

GEOGRAPHY
Situated in Scotland's Central Belt, Edinburgh lies on the Firth of Forth's southern
shore. Excepting the shoreline of the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh is encircled by a
green belt. Edinburgh is drained by a river named the Water of Leith, which runs
through the city and empties into the Firth of Forth at Leith.
The city sprawls over a landscape produced by early volcanic activity and later
periods of intensive glaciation. Igneous activity between 350 and 400 million years
ago, coupled with faulting, led to the creation of tough basalt volcanic plugs, which
predominate over much of the area. These features, along with another hollow on
the rock's south side, formed an ideal natural strong point upon which Edinburgh
Castle was built. While the early burgh grew up near the prominent Castle Rock,
the modern city is often said to be built on seven hills, giving rise to allusions to the
Seven Hills of Rome.
CLIMATE
Like most of Scotland, Edinburgh has a temperate,
maritime climate, which is relatively mild despite its
northernly latitude. Winter daytime temperatures
rarely fall below freezing and are milder than places
such as Moscow and Newfoundland, both of which lie
at similar latitudes. Summer temperatures are normally
moderate, rarely exceeding 72°F (22°C). The highest
temperature ever recorded in the city was 88.5°F
(31.4°C) on 4 August 1975. The lowest temperature
recorded in recent years was 5.7°F (−14.6°C) during
December 2010.
The city's proximity to the sea mitigates any large
variations in temperature or extremes of climate.
Given Edinburgh's position between the coast and
hills, it is renowned as "the windy city." This is due to
the prevailing winds, which are often associated with
warm, unstable air from the North Atlantic Current.
Edinburgh’s rainfall is considerably less than cities to
the west, such as Glasgow. Rainfall is distributed fairly
evenly throughout the year. Edinburgh is known for its
haar, a persistent coastal fog.

UK VISA BEST PRACTICES
Before moving to the UK for work, you will need to determine
the appropriate visa for your situation and undergo an
application process. You can obtain a visa application form
from the UK Embassy or online. Seeking the assistance of a
professional visa processing agency can simplify the process,
and is highly recommended to ensure your visa acquisition is
both successful and timely.
To obtain a UK visa, you may apply for a visitor visa at any of
the visa application centers within the country. Any other visa
applications, such as a working visa, must be made outside of
the UK, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. It's a good idea
to apply for your visa well before your intended travel date,
since it is difficult to predict how long processing times will
be and what delays might arise during the process. It is also
important to note that you must apply to obtain your own
visa for the UK. A third party cannot apply on your behalf, but
may help you complete the application form.

VISA AUTHORIZATION REQUIREMENTS
To work in the UK, an expat has a huge number of different visas to choose from. Make sure that
you take the time to find the right visa for your situation so that you will not be violating any of
the requirements. There are several work-based categories which are part of the UK’s point-based
system for immigration.
Tier 1: High Value Migrant Visas
The High Value Migrant Visa for the UK applies to “exceptionally talented” people such as investors,
entrepreneurs and others. It is designed for highly skilled workers who have made significant contributions in
their field and want to immigrate to the UK to work. In order to qualify for this type of visa you will need to
meet certain criteria on a points-based system.
Tier 2: Skilled Worker Visas
If you are a national of a country outside of the European Economic Area or Switzerland and you have a job
offer from a licensed sponsor and a certificate of sponsorship, as long as you pass the points-based assessment,
you can immigrate to the UK under the Skilled Worker Visa. This visa is for people with specific skills who have
been offered a job in the UK.

CANAIN NA H-ALBA (SCOTTISH LANGUAGE)
One of Europe’s oldest living languages, Scottish is a Celtic
language and is closely related to Cornish and Breton. It’s
called Cymraeg and is a language with entirely regular and
phonetic spelling. Names of places may look complicated but
once you know the rules, you can learn to read and pronounce
Scottish fairly easily.
Although the majority of people living in Scotland can speak
English, the Scottish language continues to thrive. Half a million
people in Scotland can speak Scottish; that’s around 19% of the
population.
Both Scottish and English exist harmoniously in Scotland. Public
bodies, including local councils, health boards, and the Scottish
Government use Scottish as an official language. They provide
services and issue official literature and publicity in Scottish,
as well as in English. Road signs in Scotland are in English and
Scottish.
