Definition/meaning continued……

Fecundity :- Total number of eggs laid by a female moth after mating.

Hatching % :-The number of larvae hatched from disease free layings.

The formula for calculation is No. of eggs hatched in a laying

Hatching percentage = ----------------------------------------------- X 100Total no. of eggs per laying

Larval Duration :- Total duration in hours from the time of hatching to that of spinning.

Cocoon yieldYield of cocoons by number:- This represents the survival rate of larvae

that spin cocoons. The formula is

Total no. of cocoons harvestedYield of cocoons by number = -------------------------------------------- X10,000

Total no. of larvae brushed

Yield of cocoons by weight:- It is the total quantity of good cocoons in

kilograms obtained for a standard unit of

10,000 larvae brushed. The formula is

Total wt. of cocoons

Yield of cocoons = ------------------------------- X Yield of cocoons by number

by weight Total no. of cocoons harvested

Filament length: Total length of filament (meters) of single cocoon reeled using epprouvette (a reeling device for monococoon reeling).

Denier : Denier is the thickness of the filament and can be calculated using the following formula.

Weight of the reeled silkDenier = --------------------------------------- X 9000

Length of the reeled silk

Leaf-Cocoon Ratio : Units (kg) of mulberry leaf required to produce one unit (kg) of cocoons.
