Unit 2: MATTER matters

Matter

Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space

Page 8: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

What is MASS?

Mass is a measurement of HOW MUCH STUFF is

in somethingMass is the amount of

matter in an object

Page 9: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Which has a greater mass?

Page 10: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

What do we use to measure mass?We use a balance and

measure mass in grams

Triple Beam Balance

Page 11: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Mass is Constant!

•All matter has mass.•The mass of an object is

constant. This means it does not change if it is moved from one place to the next.

•For example, your mass is the same whether you are on Earth or the Moon!

Page 12: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

FYI! Mass is NOT Weight!

• Weight is the force produced by gravity acting on mass

• Because gravity can change from one location to another, the weight of an object can change

Page 13: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Takes up space?

All matter has VOLUMEVolume is the amount of space

an object takes up

Page 14: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Which has a smaller volume?

Page 15: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

MatterSubstance – matter that has a uniform and definite composition, substances contain only one kind of matter.

Page 16: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Matter

Element or “Pure Element” - substance which cannot be further broken down into other substances. (consists of atoms of only one element – gold (Au), oxygen (O2), Iron (Fe)- This will be anything on the periodic table

Page 17: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Matter

Compound - a chemical substance formed from two or more elements. For example:- Dihydrogen Monoxide (water, H2O)- Carbon dioxide (CO2)- Iron II Sulfate (Fe3SO4)

Page 18: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Matter

Mixture - a blend of two or more kinds of matter.

2 types of mixtures:

Page 19: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Matter

Heterogeneous mixture - no definite composition/properties. (Ex. - salad or pizza)“Easy to separate”

Page 20: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Matter

Homogeneous mixture -have a uniform composition/properties throughout the sample. AKA Solutions. (Ex. - salt water, glass)“hard to separate.”

Page 21: Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups.

Matter

Solution - homogeneous mixture – a substance (solutes) dissolves into another substance (solvent). Ex. Salt (solute) dissolving into water (solvent)

Classification of Matter

MATTER

SUBSTANCES: Cannot be broken without

changing its identity

ELEMENT:Simplest form

of matter; cannot be

broken down.

COMPOUND:Substance in

which elementsare chemically

combined.

MIXTURES: Combination of substances in

which the identity of each substance is retained.

Homogeneous Mixture:

Mixture is the same

throughout.

Ex. Carbon,Gold, Sodium

Ex. Water, CO2,sugar

Ex. Gatorade, Air, Steel

Heterogeneous Mixture:

Mixture differs throughout.

Ex. Granite, Vegetable soup
