Team Time• Each week Tues-Thurs children will have a

quick mini-lesson on a standard in either math or reading.

• We will use mini-quizzes or class performance to determine students’ levels.

• Based on the results of those assessments, children will be placed in a group for either further enrichment or extra practice the following week during the Team Time block.

• The grouping for this is completely fluid and ever changing depending on performance on the weekly quizzes and class work.

Departmentalization

• Last year, we made a change to the way we structure the teaching of reading, English/language arts, math, science, and social studies in the 4th and 5th grades.  When schools are departmentalized, students receive instruction according to subject area, rotating rooms for different subjects. This year, your child will be on a team of two teachers; however, one teacher will provide instruction in reading and English/language arts and social studies to both homeroom classes (one morning session and one afternoon session) and the other will instruct all the students in math, science and health.  Because we are ensuring that students will write across the curriculum in almost every area, both teachers will provide instruction in writing.  Students will attend specials, eat lunch, and participate in recess, with their homeroom class.

Accelerated Reader

AR is not a required activity, but it is one that we will be encouraging.

Students will be encouraged to take AR tests on the novels we are reading and books that we have read aloud to them.

Now that AR is web-based, students will be able to find tests for more titles.
