Moffat County School DistrictMoffat County School District, which includes seven
schools and educates about 2,200 students annually, boasts a state-of-the-art middle school completed in 2009. The school, funded by a $29.5 million bond issue voters approved in 2007, includes computer labs, SMART Boards and other features tech-savvy students will need to prepare for life after graduation.
Technology is a focus throughout Moffat County schools. District-wide technology upgrades include increased bandwidth, mobile computer labs and state-of-the-art security systems.
Yet high-tech improvements haven’t eclipsed the fundamentals of learning.
Moffat County High School maintains varied core classes, electives and extracurricular activities for students with varying talents and post-graduation plans. The school’s more recent additions include an ozone measuring program and a special topics class that allows students to put science to work in the fi eld as they study snowpack, avalanches and other principles in nature.
Students who wish to garner college credit while in high school can take dual-credit classes through Colorado Northwestern Community College while those who desire to enter the workforce can earn high school credit for employment through a career training program.
Craig Middle School offers collaborative learning through the Colorado RiverWatch program. There, students can learn about chemistry and natural sciences while testing river water for the Colorado Conservation District and the Colorado Division of Wildlife. The program has received attention from agency offi cials, who have praised the young participants for their accuracy and diligence.
The district also offers free preschool programs to at-risk students who are eligible through the state-funded Colorado Preschool Program.
The district also provides all-day kindergarten, which has proved to give Moffat County’s young students a signifi cant head start on their academic skills.
The school district continually evaluates its alignment to its core values, which means student learning, achievement and offering a well-rounded education so that students can build the future of their choice.
Colorado Northwestern Community CollegeColorado Northwestern Community College is a
two-year college affi liated with the Colorado Community College System. The College offers a full range of programs including fully-transferable Associate degrees, occupational certifi cate programs, as well as a rich, non-degree, community education program.
The new campus on West Ninth Street in Craig is home to a world-class, accredited, Nursing program, along with programs in Cosmetology, and Auto/Diesel Technology. Additionally, the Rangely campus of CNCC offers programs in Aviation, Dental Hygiene, Equine Studies, and one of only 13 National Park Ranger Academies in the country.
The robust Arts & Science programs at the College allow students to earn their two-year Associate degree at a substantial savings over a traditional four-year school. With small class sizes, excellent instruction, and state-of-the-art facilities, students are discovering that CNCC is a great place to prepare for advanced degrees.
You’ll want to visit CNCC just to take in the excellent collection of art in their main campus building. Artists from around the nation, the state and from Northwest Colorado have contributed to make this collection a must-see stop while you’re in Craig.
The vibrant student body at CNCC is active in the community and hosts regular events including concerts, lectures, and open houses. Visit the college website at www.cncc.edu to fi nd out the latest events and schedule of classes.

The Memorial Hospital takes pride in providing cutting-edge technology and exceptional quality in health care, as it has for nearly 60 years.
In November 2009, TMH took its vision of health care in Moffat County to a new level when it opened its new, state-of-the-art facility atop a hill overlooking town.
The 77,000-square foot hospital houses a level IV trauma center, diagnostic imaging department, birthing center, laboratory, cardiopulmonary department, oncology department and more.
A digital mammography machine is stationed in a women’s diagnostic center, where women and their families can have a comfortable, private experience. The digital mammography machine can help detect breast cancer earlier than other forms of testing.
Each of the three operating rooms in the new hospital is larger than the combined operating space from the previous hospital. The rooms are equipped with moving booms that hold mobile plasma screens, surgical lights and tools designed for ease of use and effi ciency during surgery.
In the years since the hospital’s construction, its range of
services has steadily expanded. In summer 2010, TMH opened an oncology clinic. Once
a week, TMH offers chemo treatments with the help of St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. This is a signifi cant expansion in care. Previously, patients had to travel to Denver or Grand Junction for treatment.
In August 2011, TMH launched a hospitalist program, which provides patients with a physician who is on-site at the hospital 24 hours a day, in an effort to improve consistency of care.
The hospital also introduced a new infusion clinic that administers a range of medications, including those for chemotherapy and rheumatoid arthritis, at a location close to home.
TMH continues to provide services through its former downtown location. The facility, which has been renamed The Memorial Hospital Medical Clinic, houses a family practice and specialty clinics such as OB/GYN, internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, urology and cardiology.

For Otis Lyons, Craig Association of Realtors president, there is a simple reason why Moffat County is a great place to live.
“The mean temperature of northwest Colorado is 65-degrees, which is exactly the same as Hawaii” he said. “The only difference here is we have seasons.”
There are a lot of benefi ts to living in Moffat County — from recreational to social — but perhaps the most exciting opportunity, Lyons said, is the local real estate market.
“We really do have a diverse housing market from the standpoint that we really have a little bit of everything,” he said. “There’s a heavy inventory of a lot of nice homes.”
Finding the perfect place to live is often one of the biggest challenges people face when moving to a new community — from learning about schools, choosing a neighborhood, weighing the crime rate and evaluating available amenities.
However, those decisions are easier on buyers in Moffat County, Lyons said.
The county has an excellent school system and a low crime rate, so just about any neighborhood has the potential to become home.
“The community has been broken into about six or seven housing areas, which have all been built around schools,” Lyons said. “Particularly the elementary schools that are well located and easily accessible.”
The local market offers prospective
buyers a range of options from modular homes to established homes in older neighborhoods to brick or log ranch-styles.
In 2011, 152 houses sold for a total of $24,112,026. The average price was $158,632 according to the Moffat County Assessor’s Offi ce.
Homebuyers can expect to pay about $182,956 for a three-bedroom, two-bath stick built home in Craig, according to the assessor’s offi ce.
“A stick built home has a good return on investment, better rate of appreciation and higher quality construction,” Lyons said. “The interior material will show you got what you paid for.”
Lyons said potential homebuyers will be satisfi ed with Craig’s housing market.
“There are also more affordable options like modulars,” he said. “The advantage of building a modular is you can move in and take possession of it much faster, sometimes in just a few weeks.”
Moffat County has a home for just about anybody, Lyons said, from homes in the historic parts of downtown Craig, to something a little newer and more spacious west of town, or even the hobby farms and ranches bordering the city.
And if there isn’t something that suits you now, the future of housing in the area is looking bright, including possibilities for growth, new construction and housing developments, Lyons said.

Craig, Colorado: the Elk Hunting Capital of the World.
The city’s motto says a lot, but the numbers do most of the talking:• Approximately 56,940 elk inhabit Craig and the surrounding areas.• There are 42,370 elk in the White River elk herd south of Craig, which makes it the largest migratory herd of elk in North America.• There are 14,570 elk in the Bears Ears herd north of Craig.
Simply put, the region has more elk than the rest of Colorado.
Elk populations can be controversial at times, but during hunting season the only concern area hunters and guides have is the number elk in the fi eld.
And the thousands of hunters who make the trek to the region every year usually meet with success.
Hunters took home 7,959 elk from the White River Herd in 2010 (the latest number available). Hunters took another 3,152 elk from the Bears Ears herd.
The more than 11,000 elk killed in Northwest Colorado accounted for more than 23 percent of the elk killed statewide.
If hunters are new to the game or if they want to hunt some of the best hunting units in the region, they can contact area outfi tters who can take them on a guided hunt.
But if hunters aren’t interested in taking down one of the region’s many elk, there are plenty of other options.
In the Routt National Forest in northeastern Moffat County, hunters can go after black bears and mountain lions. The region has wild turkey, deer and antelope as well.
Elk near CraigApproximately 56,940, including Bears Ears and White River herds.

If you’d like to discover more about the heritage of Craig and Moffat County, there are numerous institutions available to provide insight on where natives come from and what has since driven the area’s development.
Museum of Northwest Colorado This museum, located in downtown Craig, offers
a chance to experience the region’s history on three floors.
The museum, a former Colorado National Guard Armory, features a wide variety of permanent displays downstairs and featured exhibits upstairs. Learn about the background of the area and its residents, whether viewing exhibits about Craig’s founding days taming the Wild West in the 19th century — seen in the upstairs Cowboy/Gunfighter Museum — or more recent times with the grouping of Moffat County High School class portraits that fill the basement. Expanding and changing all the time, you’ll see why the museum has been described by director Dan Davidson as a “continuing epic.”
Wyman MuseumThis museum is operated by Lou Wyman on his
property about three miles east of Craig.Wyman is the son of Lou Wyman Sr., who
journeyed west from Illinois in 1900 to homestead on Milk Creek in Northwest Colorado.
For decades, Wyman has been collecting articles for display at the museum. Ranging from
vintage license plates to classic car parts to antique tools, his collection of bits and pieces from all walks of life grows larger all the time.
The museum offers activities that teach the value of the technologies of yesteryear, such as blacksmithing sessions during the summer. Also on site is Wyman’s walking piece of Colorado pride, J.R. the Elk.
Marcia Car On the east side of town, visitors will find the
historic Marcia Car, a private, luxurious railroad coach built in Chicago in 1906 for David Moffat, Denver banker, businessman and railroad financier.
Named after Moffat’s daughter, Marcia Moffat McClurg, the car is a unique view into early railroad travel from a wealthy owner’s point of view. Tours of the Marcia Car are available Monday through Friday throughout the summer by stopping in the Craig Chamber of Commerce, 360 E. Victory Way.
Call 1-800-864-4405 to learn more or schedule a tour.
Coke OvensOne of the hidden historic gems of Moffat
County can be found northwest of Craig near the Greystone settlement, where turn-of-the-century miners found it unprofitable to ship their copper ore out by rail. The solution was to build a smelter and remove the copper from the ore for shipment. While the smelter is now just history, the coke
ovens still remain for historians to enjoy. One of the most well-preserved set of kilns
remaining in Colorado today, the four structures were recently turned over to the Museum of Northwest Colorado and entered into the National Historic Landmarks registry.
Call the museum at (970) 824-6360 for more information.
