few pages Practise spellings and encourage your child to
apply these words in sentencesSupport your child with their targetsHave a homework night so homework always gets
done on that night

Speaking and ListeningIt is still very important to talk to your child about
the world around them
Use phonics and high frequency word knowledge to read signs in different environments
Encourage children to read signs when you are walking or out in the car, e.g. How many miles to Hanley?
Reading Enjoy reading together!Encourage reading to be a fun and positive
experienceBig impact if children read at home every nightJust as important to have a discussion about the textEncourage your child to use their phonics knowledge
if they have a new word that is phonetically plausible in their book, e.g. pancake
Support children with high frequency wordsNew words added to the new curriculum that
children are expected to read by the end of Year 1 and Year 2
Reading Strategies to support your child
•Words within words – compound words, e.g. football, toothbrush•Look at the illustration as the picture often gives clues•Encourage your child to read with expression taking account of punctuation•Inference questioning – what is the story telling us?•Questions about the structure of the text – features of non-fiction texts, e.g. contents and index pages
•Comprehension support for Parents – handout
Reading
Phonetically decodable books and then progress when necessary
Phonics files – please keep in your child’s bag at all times and regularly check for new phonics sheets, activities or word lists
WritingIt doesn’t matter what children are
writing about as long as they are writing!
Encourage children to write in full sentences and read their work to check it
Encourage children to have a go at writing new words, using their phonics knowledge
It is important that children form letters correctly as this will help them when they begin to join letters
Please see the letter formation handout
Developing your child’s writing
• VCOP• Use interesting vocabulary• Use punctuation correctly• Correct tense• Checking work• Write lots of different text types, e.g.
lists, instructions, stories, recounts, etc…
Mathematics Reading numbers in the environment – signs, house numbers, price tags,
helping to pay at a till
It is important that children recognise coins and understand their values as well as being able to make the same amount using different coins
Please support your child to tell the time (starting with o’clock and half past)
Calculations Policy – this will support you with the strategies that we use in each year group

Key Stage One SATs Statutory Assessment Tests
Significant changes for 2016
Our current Year 2 children will be the first year to be tested on the new Key Stage One SATs as a result of there being the new National Curriculum that commenced September 2014
Please do not worry! Although expectations have been raised, every school is in the same situation.
We wanted to inform you of changes and raised expectations as soon as possible so that it answers questions you may have had at Parents Evening
Targets – included in your child’s pack (Miss Brackstone will share the new Pathways assessment at 6:30pm)
Key Stage One SATs• All children must carry out the tests at the end of Key Stage
One
More detail and clarification of the testing arrangements will be published at the end of September 2015
• Carried out during May 2016• It is essential that all children are in school during the
administration dates

New KS1 SATs Scaled scores
Due to levels going there has to be something so results can be reported consistently
National standard will be 100
Conversion tables will be available at the end of May 2016 so teachers can convert the raw score to a scaled score
Tests will be marked in school

Historically, we have not used the term ‘test’ with the children or made them feel pressurised in any way
SATs - What do they show us?• Your child’s progress is continually
monitored throughout the year
• SATs provide data for us to be measured on as a school and will be used to compare us to the national picture of KS1
