    A. Dates to Know + Key Information1. Design Team Sign-Up Deadline | Wednesday, February 28

    • All design teams must register by deadline above. www.aiasantafe.org/canstruction

    2. Design Concept Deadline | Friday, March 23

    • See subsequent sections for detailed Build Out Rules + Regulations and Design Criteria.

    • All sculpture designs must be submitted by deadline above AT THE LATEST for review and approval. You are welcome to send these anytime sooner, as designs are first come, first served and we try to avoid duplicates. Keep in mind that this is a family-friendly event and is intended to be fun and creative. We strongly discourage sculptures of logos.

    • Design Teams and Sculpture Sponsors are to collaborate to come up with their ultimate design idea. Design Teams and their Sculpture Sponsors can meet as much or as little as they think is necessary during the design process, but it is ultimately up to the Design Team to work out the details. The Design Team is acting as just that, the Designer, while the Sculpture Sponsors act as a client.

    3. CanSculpture Sponsor + Can Order Deadline | Friday, April 6

    • Due date to ensure time for order and delivery of food.

    • Design Teams will either be provided with Can Order Forms. Ideally you would have your list nearly complete when your design is due. All sponsor money must be in place for cans to be ordered - your can order amount CANNOT exceed your sculpture sponsor amount.

    4. CanSculpture Boards Due | Friday, May 18

    • Design team boards to be put together by teams, and Canstruction Santa Fe will take care of printing. Please include any pertinent information for your CanSculpture, and we will provide you with any required logos and/or text.

    5. Canstruction Build Day | Friday, June 8

    • The big day - we hope you’re ready!

    • All food orders will be weighed and delivered to the mall prior to Build Day and separated by team.

    • Snacks and lunch will be provided for builders.

    • Don’t forget to bring all of your previously prepared structural materials, any other materials required and/or equipment such as ladders. See Build Out Rules + Regulations for more information.

    • You will have ten (10) hours to build your sculpture, and may include build volunteers from both your Design Team and Sculpture Sponsor.

    6. Awards Party | Thursday, June 14

    • Judging is to remain anonymous and fair. No team members are allowed to be promoting their sculpture prior to or during judging (but of course you can encourage people to view the exhibition and participate in People’s Choice).

    • The Awards Party will be held at Santa Fe Place Mall, so we can celebrate together with our Cansculptures. Appetizers and drinks will be provided.

    7. deCanstruction Day | Monday, June 18

    • The Food Depot and their volunteers will decanstruct the cansculptures and take all canned goods from the site. The cansculptures must be easy to decanstruct. If a generous amount of support materials were used your team is responsible for retrieving and/or disposing of those materials; support materials may not be stored at Santa Fe Place.

    CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

THINK OF CAPTURING A MOMENT – i.e. an apple is good but an apple witha bite out of it is better

THINK OF POP CULTURE REFERENCES– What will harness a spectator'sattention to get them to focus on hunger and your work of art?

THINK OF SOMETHING ABSTRACT – What will make someone stop to lookat your structure rather than just pass by? Is it interesting? Would you snapa photo of it?

    FORMS

TALL CANS VS. SHORT CANS – Short cans (i.e. tuna cans) make greatgradual curves but they’re expensive! Think of ways to incorporate bothcans. Use small cans for the rounded portions and tall cans for straight lines. This will also give more variety of food to the food bank.

CANS VS. BOTTLES/BAGS – You are allowed to use pudding cups, bottles, bags and packets only as additional pieces and not as the primary structuralbuilding blocks (i.e. use for floor texture, floppy ears, tail etc).

    CUBES

STRIAGHT CUTS– Be sure to create straight cuts on your levelingmaterial for mosaic and cubed structures so that the structure isperfect from all angles.

    SPHERES

ALIGNMENT RODS – Wooden dowels, PVC pips and alignment rodsare acceptable and recommended for creating circular structures.

    CONES

CANTILEVERS – Make sure your cantilevers are very gradual so eachlayer of canned food is being supported by each underlying layer.Fill in interior layers completely for the first few layers.

PIXELLATION: Think of each can as a pixel, therefore smallobjects scaled up or large objects scaled down read better.

CONTRAST: Contrasting colors allows your structure to standout from the background when on display. Be sure to pickcolors that wont easily blend together.

BRIGHTNESS: Bright colors will make your structure standout from the rest. If you have a choice between white andorange pick orange!

FLOOR: Get creative with your flooring. Use bags, puddingcups, bottles or tuna cans to create a textured floor.Sometimes the final touches make all the difference andhelp to keep people away from your structure.
