Non- Verbal behavior can
communicate more powerfullythan the spoken word.
The problem is that it is difficultto read and control.
Look for clusters of non verbalcommunication to help you tointerpret correctly.
In communication seeing ismore important than hearing.
What you see will corroboratethe verbal message and mayalso convey new, interestinginformation.

Eye contactEye contact Most of us look directly at
other people between 30% &60% of the time whilelistening.
More eye contact than thisindicates greater interest in the
person than what he/she issaying.
Lovers and fighters oftendemonstrate this highpercentage of eye contact!!
In negotiation you should makeyour point and then keep silentbut maintain eye contact youmight feel the tension but theother person will feel thepressure. Wait for them to
crack first.

Signs of Deception and lying Less Eye contact will occur
when we feel uncomfortableor guilty.
Policemen or Lawyers are
working on this principlewhen they persistently lookat the suspect or defendant
Hands touch their face,throat, nose, mouth, ear.
Physical expression will belimited and stiff. The liar will take up less
space with their hand, armand leg movement facing
towards their own body.

When eyebrows are lowered
the person is usuallyfrowning. This may signify worry,
criticism or disagreement But look for supporting
evidence to make up thecluster.
The frown may simplymean concentration orpuzzlement.
Raised eyebrows canindicate surprise or disbelief One raised eyebrow suggests
an element of suspicion orchallenge.

The mouthThe mouth
When the mouth drops openthis can suggest eitherastonishment or surprise.
Or may simply be a question
of relaxation. Tightened lips indicate a
defensive mode.
A rebellious streak can be
identified by thrusting outthe chin.

The HeadThe Head Held straight up indicates aneutral position listening hardand evaluating.
Small nods acknowledge thatinformation is being received, butdo not necessarily meanagreement.
Tilting the head to one side signalsa developing interest.
A downcast head could mean aproblem. Basically the gesturesignals evaluation but withnegative overtone leading perhapsto submission.
You cannot see their eyes & theycannot pick up on your non-verbalsignals say something to get theirattention!

We associate a smile withhappiness but there aredifferent kinds of smile!
The grimace, the wry,
resigned sardonic or coysmiles
These all represent verydifferent emotions,particularly when linkedwith other associatedgestures.

Crossed legs and crossed armsshout resistance but it can
just mean than someone hasbeen sitting for a long time andare feeling uncomfortable.
Leaning forward eager
The right ankle resting on leftknee indicates anargumentative or competitiveframe of mind.
Legs together, or slightly infront of the other is a positivesignal.
Legs and feet pointing towardan exit is an unreceptive sign.

a persons weight is evenlydistributed and the body istilted towards the speaker.
Crossed legs indicate anegative stance.
Legs pointing away fromthe speaker or towards theexit is also a negative signal. Other negative signals are
hands clenched, arms crossed
in front of the chest orrubbing the neck Arms spread, hands open or
relaxed are all positivesignals.

Too much significance to an isolated gesturemay lead to wrong conclusion look for
clusters. A key message can be dramatically reinforced
by supporting gestures which are consistentwith it.
