Weekend Associate
On this first Sunday of the new year, we want
to welcome all who have come to be with us today.
Welcoming you is more than merely being
polite. For sure, we like being polite, but we also want
to treat you as the treasures you are, persons who are
bringing themselves and their experiences to our
church.
As you come to be with us, take the time to
look around and ask questions. We want you to
discover what this parish is all about and how we can
help you on your own journey of faith.
And if you are desiring a parish to call your
own, please come back again.

Pastor’s Note:
STARTING OVER
Some people cherish the chance to
do so. Others dread having to do it.
That is, the task of starting over
again.
We often start over. Each
meal preparation is a new beginning. Each morning
getting out of bed is a time for starting over. And then
there are the bigger start-overs, like taking on a new
job, moving to a new community, and having a new
baby.
Starting over assumes that one has already done
something similar before. So there is a sense of
familiarity while at the same time realizing it won’t be
exactly the same. The way I look at starting over is to
see myself on a new adventure. I love taking the
experiences I may have from the past and applying
them to new situations and new people.
As humans, we are constantly starting over.
January, however, allows us an opportunity to start over
in a more formal and conscious way. And in this time
of starting over, we can leave behind those things that
we don’t really like or want.
Please don’t just ‘drift’ into the new year.
Consciously think through your life and think about the
ways in which you want to, and can, start over.
Happy New Year!
MONDAYS AT ST. CLARE’S
Each Monday we celebrate our parish Mass at 9:30
a.m., at St. Clare Commons instead of in our own
chapel. All in the parish are invited to join us. You’ll
find the chapel right inside the main entrance.
WINTER WEATHER MASS POLICY
If and when snow days occur this winter, please know
that we cancel weekday Masses on those days when the
Perrysburg schools are canceled (not delayed). As for
Sunday Masses, they are almost never canceled!
CONGRATULATIONS TO NEWLY-BAPTIZED
We welcome the newly-Baptized in our parish: Keaton
James Smith, son of Jeffrey and Lisa. May he grow in
God’s love and grace!
THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
STARTING IN JANUARY
Many people have said to others or themselves, ‘Starting
in January, I will….” Resolutions don’t have to be
assigned to a new year, but starting something new in
January is always a good way to face the days ahead.
Here are some “Starting in January” ideas for you.
Starting in January,
I will say a short prayer before starting the car,
praying for safety, certainly, but also praying for
patience with all those other drivers out there.
I will stop doing some other task when someone is
trying to talk with me, therefore, allowing myself to
really listen. (Multi-tasking makes no sense in
conversations.)
I will say thanks to God at a minimum of three times
each day.
I will practice walking away from some attachment,
whether it be food or brain-numbing television.
I will consciously think about how I spend money
and whether it makes my life any better.
I will seek out soundness of body and spirit,
exercising both on a regular basis.
I will call or write (by letter or email) one person
each week, just to see how that person is doing and
not about my own agenda.
I will share some insight from church with someone
else.
And I will arrive at church ten minutes early so that I
can settle in and be relaxed before Mass begins.
SACRIFICIAL COMMITMENT
Our Sunday offering for the weekend of December 21-22
was $15,214. Thank you. Also we have received, so far,
$46,225 in the Christmas offering. Since our bulletin has
to go to press early, our Sunday offering for December 28
-29, will be reported in a future bulletin. Thank you. And
as we enter a new year, please remember that God’s
generosity can never be outdone. As we share our
treasures, God always finds a way to bring it back to us
more generously.
FAITH ALIVE! NEXT WEEK
Our next Faith Alive! gatherings will
be 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on
Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014. At these
gatherings we will be exploring our
“belief in the Holy Catholic Church.”
This will be an exciting time to discover more about the
church in light of the Creed.
Faith Alive! is open to parishioners of all ages.
Registration at this time, since we are at the midpoint, is
$10 per session. If you have not yet registered, please do
so: Parish Website under Life-Long Faith Formation.
Parents with children in grades K-5, remember
Faith Alive! is our on-going religious education process.
Students and their families in these grades are expected to
participate every year and all year, not just when they are
in a sacramental program. Home lessons need to be
completed and turned in on Faith Alive! Sunday. Thanks
to all those parents who take their children’s faith
development seriously and attend Faith Alive! with
regularity.
NEW PARENT RETREAT
The New Parent Retreat for parents

and stay until 8:00 p.m. If you can help, please sign up
on www.signupgenius.com or call Marla.

PRAY FOR NEW BISHOP
You may notice that we are omitting the name of the
bishop in the Eucharistic prayer during this time when
there is no bishop within the diocese. I suspect I and some
other priests will continue to pray for Leonard, out of ten-
years-worth of habit. But I will try to catch myself. Not
saying a name is a great reminder that we have a ‘Vacant
See,’ that is, no bishop at this time.
I think we all know how significant a leader can
be and how any leader can set a tone for an organization.
The same is especially true for a bishop and a diocese.
My own personal prayer is that, following the vision and
understanding of Pope Francis, we will receive a bishop
who is pastoral and truly willing ‘to get his shoes dirty’ as
the pope says.
Please keep in mind that it often takes up to a year
or more for a diocese to receive a new bishop, so this will
be an interesting year.

CONDOLENCES AND
PRAYERS
We offer our prayers and support to
the Jason Eichenberg family at the
death of Jason’s father, Charles two weeks ago. May
Charles live in God’s love and may the family find
peace and profound joy. We also our prayers for the
family and friends of Michael Tretter who died
suddenly right before Christmas. May God grant him
fullness of life and comfort to his family.
A LETTER OF THANKS
We received the following letter from Assumption
Center, whose pantry benefited from our Thanksgiving
Food Drive.
“We offer our sincere gratitude to you, your
parishioners and your wonderful young people for the
very generous donation of canned goods, other food
staples and toiletry products for our clients. As you
well know, our shelves were bare, so the donation helps
to fill the gap. Please let the students know how much
we appreciated their work in sorting and transferring all
the items to the pantry
“Great things can happen when we partner with
each other. On behalf of all those we serve, we given
thanks! Please let your parishioners know how much
we appreciate them. The donation lasted for three
weeks. We give thanks to others who have also stepped
up to the plate.”
Did you read above to see that all that food that
we took to the center lasted only three weeks? We will
plan to do another food drive in a couple of months. –

POPE FRANCIS’ EXHORTATION
Join Fr. Herb at one of his Saturday morning “Going
Deeper” sessions, 9:00-10:30 a.m., Saturday, January
18, for a session that will review Pope Francis’ recent
published exhortation, “Evangelii Guadium” (The Joy
of the Gospel). This man, who has excited Christians
and non-Christians alike, has brought about a statement
that men and women of faith in the 21st century will
want to read. Come and enjoy this session in what Fr.
Herb likes to call ‘informal but informed’ discussion.
No registration necessary.
WHEN OUR PATRON GETS CANONIZED
In four months we will be facing something that very few
parishes experience. Pope John XXIII, pope from 1958 to
1963, will be canonized a saint on April 27, 2014. At that
time, our parish will no longer be called ‘Blessed John
XXIII’ but ‘Saint John XXIII.’ We are honored that this
great leader and humble servant of the Lord will be
recognized as a holy man and saint. For us, the occasion
will allow us to celebrate the pope’s legacy and find new
ways to be inspired by his faith and way of looking at
service in the church.
We are not certain yet just how we will observe
this momentous event. But we want out emphasis to be on
the ways in which our parish will continue to reflect our
motto, paraphrased from Pope John’s own words, “A
community carried by God, carrying God to others.”
Watch for more details in the next couple of months.
TIME TO REGISTER?
Whether or not you are registered as parishioners, you are
always welcome here. At the same time, if you are a
regular participant, you may find now the time to register.
What happens when you ‘sign up’ is that
you help us get to know you. But you are
also making a personal commitment to
your faith growth.
We have discovered that when
people register, they usually take the
commitment very seriously. That means they invest
themselves more in this journey of faith that we are all on.
So we encourage you to pick up one of the Parish
Registration Intent forms at the church doors (or on line)
and complete it today.
LIVE MASS STREAMING
If you are new to Blessed John,
you may not know that we
broadcast all of our weekend
and holiday Masses LIVE
through the parish website and
Blessed John App. In addition
to LIVE streaming, each Mass is archived for one
week, so that anyone can go back and listen to scripture
readings, Father’s homily, or a favorite song. We hope
that you take advantage of this and inform others they
can tune in from anywhere in the world.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS TAKE-DOWN
It is a necessary step of life that we take down Christmas
decorations in January. This is a much faster task than
putting them up, but we still need help. Please join us at
1:00 this afternoon, January 5. Thanks.
3:45 CLUB IN JANUARY
Our 3:45 Club event in January will be
a ‘movie evening’ beginning at 6:30
p.m., Friday, January 17, at Blessed John Parish Life
Center. Who can resist a movie with popcorn and
more? Sign up in the Youth Room after Mass.

NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is
asking all of us to observe the week of January 5-11 as
National Migration Week with the theme of ‘Out of
Darkness.’ The Feast of Epiphany and its emphasis on the
universality of the church and the travels of the Magi,
always help us focus on those away from the native lands.
The Bishops highlight the following four groups:
· Migrant Children are one of the most vulnerable
migrant populations, open as they are to exploitation and
abuse. Special protections should be given to them to
ensure their safety and well-being.
· Undocumented immigrants are often referred to as
"living in the shadows." Their marginal status has led
advocates for reform to call for a legalization process that
will bring them out of the shadows and provide them with
the opportunity to contribute to society and live out their
lives in dignity. To learn how you can help the bishops
pass comprehensive immigration reform, please take the
time to visit the Justice for Immigrants website
(www.justiceforimmigrants.org).
· All too many Refugees who are left mired in refugee
camps around the world never have the opportunity to
realize the full potential of their God-given skills and
talents. Long term solutions need to be implemented so
that refugees are not forced to remain in camps but can
reintegrate into society and become contributing members
of it.
· Enslaved and treated like objects for profit rather than
as human beings, victims of human trafficking require
liberation from their bondage and support to help them
start anew. Those who enslaved them need to be brought
to justice and punished accordingly so that they will not
have the opportunity to hurt anyone else in the future.
Find out more about Human Trafficking and what you can
do to spread awareness during National Migration Week
and beyond.
USE OF BACK EXIT (THROUGH ST CLARE)
As noted in the item on Christmas, we invite all who
come to consider using the back entrance/exit that goes
through St. Clare Commons. It is open and available. It
connects with Five Point Road and may allow you to
avoid the busier traffic on Dixie Highway. Of course,
we ask that you use caution wherever you drive.
TIME TO REGISTER?
Whether or not you are registered as parishioners, you are
always welcome here. At the same time, if you are a
regular participant, you may find now the time to register.
What happens when you ‘sign up’ is that you help us get
to know you. But you are also making a personal
commitment to your faith growth.
We have discovered that when people register,
they usually take the commitment very seriously. That
means they invest themselves more in this journey of faith
that we are all on. So we encourage you to pick up one of
the Parish Registration Intent forms at the church doors
(or on line) and complete it today.
MID-WEEK MEDITATION
We have all had those times when we get out of focus and
forget to turn attention to God, especially as the week
goes along. For that reason, Fr. Herb publishes a weekly
“Mid-Week Meditation.” It is a
brief opportunity for people to
turn their attention to faith, using
normal everyday experiences to
draw us back to God.
To add your name to the
list of recipients, please go to
www.flocknote.com/blessedjohn.
There you can register (free of
charge) and indicate how you
want to receive messages from
Blessed John, either as email or on your mobile device.
Then subscribe to ‘Mid-Week Meditation.’
GRIEVING THE LOSS OF
SOMEONE?
We have a number of ‘Care Notes’
for those who are suffering the loss
of someone through death. You can
check out these Care Notes just to
the south of the gathering space in
the hallway of the Parish Life
Center. Please take what you likely with read…or pass
on to those who need them.
