Weekly Halacha - Parshas Nasso R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

When Shabbat ends late, may I have my underage children make havdalah early, before bedtime?

Children should not recite havdalah before Shabbat is over; the mitzvah of educating children involves training them to perform each mitzvah in its proper form.

Theoretically, children who go to sleep before Shabbat is over should recite havdalah on Sunday morning, as an adult would. [Note: One who recites havdalah in the morning does not use besamim or a flame.] However, some contend that underage children should not recite havdalah on Sunday morning, arguing that they are exempt from making up the mitzvah, and that we don't wish to train them to delay havdalah until Sunday. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 299:6; Igrot Moshe Orach Chaim 5:20:5; Kinyan Torah 5:21; Rivivot Ephraim 1:30:2)

PARSHAS QUESTIONS NASSO BY: THE RAV

First Aliyah: Why were the Levites divided into three families and their responsibilities were divided – why not let every Levi participate in all the work? Second Aliyah: Why does a Levite’s work begin at 30 and not at 20 like everyone else? Third Aliyah: (5:2) Why does the law of sending out impure and leprous people from the camp appear at this point in the Torah – doesn’t that belong in Vayikra? Fourth Aliyah: Why are the laws of Sotah and Nazir placed here? Fifth Aliyah: Wasn’t the Mishkan fully inaugurated back in Parshas Shemini? Why is the Torah repeating it over here? Sixth Aliyah: If each tribal prince brought the exact same gift, why does the Torah need to repeat each one’s gift – just say each one brought so and so!? Seventh Aliyah: (7:89) What does the verse mean by saying, “When Moshe would enter the Tent to speak with Hashem” – shouldn’t it have stated “When Moshe would enter to receive Hashem’s command?”

A PRACTICAL INCLUSION TIP So ALL of Us Feel Valued and Welcome at BAYT

Inclusion Through Connection to Others- COMMITMENT

Commitment requires that we spend time with the person we wish to connect with. Commitment cements the bond between friends. The best most effective commitment is through action. Find ways to do something, for example, a productive and constructive action or project, with the person you want to connect with. Action breeds feelings. Doing something together will draw forth the intrinsic connection between yourself and others. This is especially effective when connecting with immediate family and signifi-cant others. (from Rabbi Simon Jacobson, “How to Connect: 7 Steps”, exodusmagazine.org, April 2018)
