Welcome to 6 th Grade! Reading and writing are lifelong skills that need to be nurtured and practiced regularly. The more students read, the more proficient they become at reading and writing. This summer, the incoming 6 th grade students will have 2 required reading assignments (one Nonfiction and one Fiction) as well as an optional “pleasure reading” task. Students will also complete a Summer Math Packet, which reviews all math concepts learned. Tasks: Nonfiction Required Reading: Read and discuss either Girls Who Rocked the World: Heroines from Joan of Arc to Mother Teresa by Michelle Roehm McCann and Amelia Welden -- OR Boys Who Rocked the World: Heroes from King Tut to Bruce Lee by Michelle Roehm McCann. 6th Grade Fiction Writing Assignment Letter to Mrs. Stefan

Directions: Write and send a letter to your sixth grade ELA teacher (Mrs. Stefan) using the following structure below. Date Dear Mrs. Stefan, Paragraph 1 (at least six sentences) Briefly describe the Fiction book you chose to read this summer. Include the author and setting of the book and a brief synopsis. Explain why you chose this book title over the other five choices. Paragraph 2 (at least six sentences) Describe the main character from the Fiction book you read. What did this character look like? What was this character’s family like? Describe the character’s personality. What character trait best describes the main character and why? How did this character change from the beginning of the book to the end. Paragraph 3 (at least six sentences) Describe the main conflict in the story and how it was resolved. Be sure to include details from your novel the beginning, middle, and end of your novel. Paragraph 4 (at least six sentences) Compare and contrast the main character to yourself. How are the two of you similar? How are you different? What is something you learned from this character? What is something this character can learn from you?
