Emergent reader -beginning to understand that words need letters, that letters and words have specific sounds, and that a person reads from right to left. They realize that print contains a message and they use memory as a reading strategy.
EARLY READER -beginning to read word for word. Students begin to realize there are a number of strategies they can use when reading.
