Welcome to a world of new and unlimited opportunities. Based on thorough research and our own experience, the new Topsil plant in Frederikssund has been designed down to the slightest detail to meet our production requirements. The state-of-the-art plant is built with a view to optimising our production flow.

A world of new opportunities

We constantly optimise the production process, and the new plant is designed to offer our customers a completely new generation of products. In our new plant, we have a capability to produce silicon with a diameter of up to 200 mm.

A completely clean world

Topsil’s plant creates a framework for the best and cleanest production conditions. All wirings and cables have been encapsulated outside the production area to ensure that there is a minimum of human contact with the product. Furthermore, the employees wear specific indoor shoes and clean-room work wear.

The new plant at Silicon Road prepares Topsil well for the future. Demand for more and higher utilisation of energy is growing, and indications are that we can expect long-term market growth. At the same time, the new plant covers the areas that are the most crucial to our customers now and in the long term.

In the spring of 2011, former Minister for Climate and Energy, Lykke Friis, cut the first turf for Topsil’s new plant at Copenhagen Cleantech Park.

The location at Vinge shows that Topsil has deliberately chosen a location close to other cleantech companies. All companies in Copenhagen Cleantech Park will be knowledge-based businesses boasting a green profile.

The area is especially designed for this purpose, based on principles of future-proofing and sustainability.

Topsil is pleased to be able to synergise with other knowledge-based companies in the area and – in the future – to have easy access to the motorway network and a fully developed infrastructure.

Cleantech is a rapidly developing industry, and Topsil will be part of that growth, both now and going forward.

Perfect framework

With the new production facilities, Topsil has created the perfect production flow. The design of the buildings was determined by the production process, and that presented a particular challenge to the architect.

The layout design phase was based on thorough research and best industry practice, and the employees were also consulted. This secured the perfect framework for the company’s production.

From receiving the incoming raw materials for production to delivering finished silicon wafers to the customers, optimising the production operation is an integral part of the entire process.

Designing Topsil’s new plant has been a challenge. Functionality and logistics are the core elements of the architecture, and the

design of the construction plant is therefore a result of manyreflections on how to achieve a good production flow.

Sustainable, environmentally friendly construction

At the new plant, Topsil has given top priority to sustainability and the environment. The environmental aspects include the working environment and safety in the production process as well as the local area.

For example, Topsil uses surplus heat from production for heating the plant offices. That makes environmental sense. Moreover, process water from production isrecycled after filtration to remove any grinding dust.

Safe working conditionsSafety is key in production at Topsil’s new plant. Topsil works according to best industry practice, using specialised equipment to create optimum conditions for the working environment and safe production at the new plant.

Energy-efficient productsTopsil’s ultra-pure silicon is among the best products in the market. Silicon helps conduct electricity from one point to another. once silicon is ultra-pure, the heat loss is at a minimum, benefiting the environment and enhancing resource consumption.

Right from the start of the construction project, we focused strongly on working environment and safety. Safety has been increased through, among other things, automation of our purification processes, which

About Topsil

For more than 50 years, Topsil has been manufacturing ultrapure silicon. The silicium is sold to the global semiconductor industry and used in components to control and conduct electricity.

Topsil has specialised in manufac-turing the purest form of silicon in the market. About three quarters of Topsil’s production forms part of cleantech applications, i.e. products directly or indirectly contributing to energy efficiencey.

Topsil is headquartered in Denmark and has additional production facilities in Warsaw, Poland. Topsil employs around 370 people in total (2011).

Since 1986, Topsil has been listed at nASDAQ oMX Copenhagen.

Manufacturing siliconTopsil applies two different production technologies, producing silicon with different properties.

Manufacturing silicon is a complex, high-technology process where the

raw material, quartz sand, is first distilled and then compressed to form raw silicon.

once Topsil has recieved the raw material from its suppliers, the matrial undergoes various processing stages before being melted at high temperatures to become ultra-pure silicon. Depending on the area of application, the material will undergo further processes.

During the entire production process, the qua-lity of the silicon is tested against a number of technical parameters before the end product is cut into wafers to be registered and carefully packed.
