Principals Corner Dear KES Family and Friends-
This is it! This is officially the last Dolphin Digest newsletter for
the 2011-2012 school year. I have appreciated all the support and time of
our parents, staff and students. This was a challenging year with several
changes – from teacher evaluations and observations, new staff members,
FCAT testing, scoring and new cut scores, all while balancing classes and
meeting class size amendment! We took it all in stride and focused our
attention to what we do best – teach children! Many thanks to all of you
that helped make our jobs of teaching your children easier, smoother and
enjoyable.
We hope to see all of our Ketterlinus families on June 6th for our
KES Movie Night on Francis Field. The feature film is “Dolphin
Tale” (PG). The movie will start approximately 8:30pm (sunset). Gates
will open at 7:30pm. Remember to bring blankets and/or lawn chairs. This
is not a drop-off event, all students must be supervised by an adult. Wrist
bands will be handed out at the gate. Our fabulous PTO will be selling
popcorn, drinks, pizza and candy. Volunteers are still needed. Please
check our school website to sign up.
This summer we will be hosting our Ketterlinus Summer Reading Chal-
lenge - “Be a Star, Read AR” days at St. Augustine High School and Ket-
terlinus Elementary School. Please look for the brochure for detailed infor-
mation on dates, times and locations. This program has been organized by
our media specialist, Mrs. Droege, to promote the love of reading over the
summer.
Beginning on June 11th, our school administration and front office
will be moving to St. Augustine High School as part of our summer con-
solidation and energy saving program. Our phone numbers will remain the
same. In addition, we will also begin (4) ten hour day weeks, being closed
on Fridays.
The last day of school will be Wednesday, June 6th at 1:50pm.
This will be a very hectic day with classroom celebrations and good-byes.
We will be saying good-bye to some of our students and families as they
will be moving to Palencia Elementary School next school year. We wish
them the best! Also, we will be saying good-byes to a very special group of
fifth grade students. This group was exceptional! There are some great
leaders and thinkers in this group of fifth grade students. They have made
me very proud and I will miss them terribly. However, before we say good-
bye to them, we have one last adventure with them…our second annual
Faculty vs Fifth Grade Students Kickball game. Last year, the faculty
team was victorious. The fifth graders are looking to make the first win.
KES families and students are welcome to come out on Wednesday, June
6th at 9am to watch this match up on Francis Field. Best wishes for an excellent and safe summer!

Summer Creative Writing & More Camps Summer 2012 marks the 5th year of Summer Writing & More Camps for 6-14 year olds. Dr. Sandra Davis, a professor at Flagler College and Katherine Abare- Paolini, a teacher at R.B. Hunt Ele-mentary have teamed up again to offer two one-week, fun filled academic and amusement adventures! The past four years have been wonderful! This year we have added some new features and prom-
ise even greater times for our campers.
All-a-Board: Designing Your Own Board Game
June 11 -14, 2012 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Have you ever spent time daydreaming about an idea you had? If you could pick one game to play,
what is it about that game that interests you? Do you make up new rules to games? Do you make up games to play with things you have around the house? Have you always wanted to invent your own board game, but didn’t have the time or weren’t quite sure where to begin? Whether you have a theme in mind for a brand new game such as your favorite book, the streets or popular sites of St Augustine, or you want to make a variation of a classic game, de-signing a board game teaches problem solving, innovation, coopera-tion and imagination. Campers will go through the actual process that professional inventors and designers go through every day to create and develop original games: brainstorming, creating, testing, and pitching their concepts to ‘clients.’ Campers will be given a game kit which includes game board, pawns and dice, blank spin-ner, sand timer, blank game cards, printed play money and a box for storage. While the excitement of designing and creating the board games fills a big part of each day, we will still have time to give our imaginations a break and go for a swim in the campus pool, and play pool, ping-pong, and foosball in the Ring-haver Student Center with our new friends.
Pirate Pizzazz June 18-21, 2012 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Ahoy Matey – (Hello my friend!) Since Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the hit movie, Pirates of the Caribbean, pirate fiction has been a popular theme for all writers-children through adults. Through fictional (such as Robert Louse Stevenson’s Treasure Island) and non-fictional litera-ture, campers will discover facts and legends about pirates, and learn that every pirate novel needs an exotic setting, a revealing theme and strong and engaging characters. Campers will write pirate tales, create logbook entries, design a wanted poster, and write a limerick about real or make believe pirates. Campers will visit the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, and they will be asked to put on their sea legs (The ability to adjust one's balance to the motion of a ship) as we take a ride on an imaginary pirate ship to gain inspiration for their writing. Campers will engage in a writ-ers’ workshop format which will include mini lessons on writing techniques, exercises to awaken creativity, and discussions on edit-ing. Every writer will receive individual attention, and will be in-spired and encouraged to polish their writing skills in a fun, interac-tive environment. Campers, RRRRR you ready to go on treasure hunts, complete buccaneer (pirate) training which will include a lesson in pirate language, and compete in pirate games such as Cap-ture the Flag, Cannonball Relay, Hook the Treasure, and The Pi-rate Ship Race? Shiver me timbers! (An expression of surprise or strong emotion)--- During break times, we won’t take a caulk (take a nap) but we will take a dip in the pool and join our new friends in the campus recreation room for a game of ping pong or foosball. For more info call: 819-232 or 599-1175
BRING YOUR KIDS TO FEEL THE WHEELS Have your children ever wondered how a tow truck works? Or what the inside of a tank looks like? Or how a police officer turns on the siren? On Saturday, June 2nd, your family has the opportunity to discover the answers together! The Junior Service League of St. Augustine is proud to present Feel The Wheels, a fundraiser benefitting The Childrens Museum of St. Johns (CMSJ). Feel The Wheels will be open from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at The St. Augustine Outlet Mall (East side of I-95). Feel The Wheels is a unique, interactive, one-day event that allows children to see, touch, and explore big trucks. With over 20 exhibi-tors, families can expect to see vehicles such as construction trucks, emergency responders, tractor-trailers, and boats. Drivers will be on hand to explain how the trucks work. Tickets are $5 for children aged 2-15. Adults receive free admission. All of the proceeds from Feel The Wheels will go toward helping the CMSJ establish a home in St. Augustine. CMSJ will provide a hands-on experience that shatters the traditional perceptions of museums. Organizers are dedicated to the interests and development of their pint-sized visitors, encouraging them to become learners, teachers, and discoverers.
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION LAUNCHES STATEWIDE
CAMPAIGN TO COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS
TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of Education (DOE) today launched a host of resources geared toward communicat-ing directly with Florida’s parents about public education. The pur-pose of this effort is to help parents understand Florida’s assess-ment and accountability system, increased standards, and how these changes will help prepare our K-12 students for college, career, and life. “Florida’s parents and guardians provide invaluable support to our students and the department is committed to ensuring they have the most accurate user-friendly information and resources avail-able,” said Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson. “We are asking more from our students and teachers than we ever have, and parents play a critical role in Florida’s path forward.” New resources for parents include an FCAT 2.0 Call Center, Flor-ida’s Path to Success website, DOE Parent Portal by Novachi, and Just for Parents e-mail address.
