Everyday Stewardship
"The Story of the Other Wise Man" by Henry Van Dyke was first published in 1895. It tells the fictional story of
Artaban, a fourth wise man who began a journey to visit Jesus, the newborn King. Unlike his fellow Magi, he failed
to make it there for the birth of Jesus because he kept pausing to help various people in need. In fact, it took him
about 33 years of searching before his quest comes to an abrupt end when he is hit in the head with a falling roof
shingle. His final breath takes place in Jerusalem near the place where Jesus is being crucified. As he lies dying, he
hears the voice of Jesus telling him that the gifts he has given all along the way to "the least of these" he has actual-
ly given to Jesus himself.
If you have never read this story or seen the made-for-television movie based on the tale, you really should seek it
out. It is a story that reminds us of a profound truth: Jesus himself rests in the lives of all those around us in need.
In the story, it was the wise man's constant response to a stewardship call that prevented him from getting where
he wanted to go. In the end, where he needed to go was more significant than where he thought he should go.
If we live lives of generosity and graciousness, we may find ourselves on constant detours from the road on which
we are traveling. It is in the detours and the unexpected circumstances of our journey that often times we find our
true purpose in life. We think God is somewhere we must travel to, when in reality, God is closer than we think in
the least likely of places.
PONDER WITH THE POPE JESUS IS GOD-WITH-US
"The presence of God among men did not take place in a perfect world but rather in this real world, which is
marked by so many things both good and bad, by division, wickedness, poverty, arrogance, and war. He chose
to live in our history as it is, with all the weight of its limitations and of its tragedies. In doing so, he has
demonstrated in an unequaled manner his merciful and truly loving disposition toward the human creature.
He is God-with-us. Jesus is God-with-us. Do you believe this?"
Reflection: Mother Teresa was inspired by a poem that states , " People are often unreasonable, irrational, and
self-centered. Forgive them anyway." Christmas is a reminder of God's plan to enter into our brokenness and to
be merciful anyway. What part of your brokenness does God need to enter into? He is with you. Don't hide your

Today as we observe the feast of the Epiphany, we might wonder “why do we celebrate these three wise men that
traveled to see the Baby Jesus”? It is not uncommon for a new Mother to have people bring gifts in celebration of
their newborn. However, Mary mostly did not have a baby shower with her family and friends as is commonly done
in present time. The gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh seem strange to us today but what did they represent to
the Baby Jesus?
Gold is given to the King of mankind that represents the richness of his glory. Frankincense, a perfume, was a very
expensive gift in the day, given as only a King would receive. Myrrh, a healing balm given to represent the work that
Jesus was born to do here on earth. Gifts fit for a King.
The three kings traveled for many months, some say years, to worship the new born King. The story of the star that
led them to the manager where Jesus was born in Bethlehem has been told to us each year at this time. This celebra-
tion is our invitation to open our hearts and minds to God’s presence in our life. In the love of people; the beauty of
a mountain range; in the playful herd of goats; or in a line of giant oak trees; we are blessed with God all around us.
We are made in the image of God and this feast invites us to open our hearts up to His presence. The constant re-
minder of Mary, Mother of the Church right here in our presence is yet another reason to thank God for all the bless-
ings we have in our lives. Take a minute to sit quietly and look at the sculpture of Mary that we are fortunate to have
here on the grounds of St. Patrick.
Have a Renewed and Happy New Year.
