“Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity - not a

threat.”-Steve Jobs

4/14 is...Distance Learning

What is Distance Learning?

A learning experience where teachers and students are separated by place.

They communicate asynchronously through printed or electronic media and/or through technology that

allows them to communicate synchronously.

Distance Learning Plan

● Consistent continuity of learning to the greatest degree possible

● Ongoing connections between teachers and peers and teachers and students

● Sense of normalcy and routine during a stressful time and allowing for flexibility of circumstances

What are we trying to accomplish for students?

Centrally Created Materials in MS

Learning Packets

● Grade-level Learning Packets distributed on a weekly cadence provide equitable access to learning experiences for all students

● Focused on 4 core and Portrait of a Graduate

● Packets will be posted for teachers on Distance Learning Support BB course a week ahead and in our Distance Learning Site

● Students and families can see them in Blackboard.

● Opt out of mailing: here

Grading and Feedback3rd Quarter

● Close third quarter grades as of 3/13 (students given the opportunity for makeup

work, re-assessment) until April 24th to calculate third quarter grade.

• Any missing work from any point in the quarter can be made up

• Teachers will communicate with students to provide make-up and re-take

opportunities or to EXCUSE Grades.

• “Do no harm” to student grade.

4th Quarter

● Assign a “no mark” for fourth quarter, but allow students’ work in 4th quarter to

positively influence their final marks based on trends in mastery of learning

Note: Only final grades show on transcripts; a “no mark” will not show on a student’s final transcript

Grading: Common Questions:

● For students taking HS level classes or classes that grades will be used for their HS GPA, is there a difference in how these classes are being treated compared to other classes that are not included in GPA? Determination of final grades is still being refined.

● I understand 4th quarter doesn’t have grades, so I am wondering if there is any way they can make up their grades for the previous quarters. 3rd Quarter is open until April 24 and grade will be no lower than what it was on March 13. Q 1 and Q 2 are closed.

● Regarding the term "positively influence", does it mean that final grades can go up but cannot go down? YES

● Are there opportunities for students turn in missing work to “re-test” on assessments from Q 3? YES

What about my student’s “stuff”?

Our focus right now is, of course, to keep our students, families, and staff safe, so we

are limiting access to the building. There will be an opportunity at some point for

students to come and clean out their lockers, but that will not happen for a while.

Teachers know and understand that students likely do not have access to notebooks,

etc. from their lockers.
