For years most salons did their marketing primarilyaccording to the calendar. Every month or two they would send out newsletters. Special occasions such as Christmas and New Year, Mother’s Day and perhaps the salon’s birthday would warrant some form of marketing as well. The idea was to keep people coming back to the salon by regularly placing inviting special offers to tempt them to return. And this worked reasonably well. The problem was that we timetabled the advertising and it went out whether it was needed or not. So there were times when the salon f igures showed lulls because we didn’t plan marketing and other times when marketing went out despite the fact that income was strong. Another factor was that it was predictable so many clients simply waited for the deals and only purchased treatments when they were at better prices.

Whilst some occasions like Mother’s Day and Christmas will always warrant some form of marketing, many salons adopted a system where the best predictor of when marketing should go out is to watch customer numbers rather than income. Most salons have a fairly stable average spend per customer throughout the year. What changes their income is the rise and fall in client numbers week to week. So by monitoring client number trends and having a number of different pre-prepared marketing ideas ready, they were able to react quickly to drops in client numbers and therefore income. However, it still took a week or so for the marketing to be sent, arrive in letterboxes and be acted upon. So whilst the marketing was far more reactive there was still a lag time between noticing the dip in numbers and f ixing the problem with appropriate marketing.

The vast majority of salons today have sophisticated software systems that assist with bookings, point of sale and marketing. They are considered mandatory for successful salons in today’s environment. Ian Sage from Beautyware salon software has been teaching salon owners using his system to do predictive marketing based on advanced booking numbers. By monitoring advanced bookings up to four weeks ahead salon owners can start predicting slower weeks and have 3-4 weeks to get marketing out either through the mail, email or text rectifying the potential low point in customer numbers. This way drops in salon income can be averted completely. The advantages are that marketing only needs to be delivered when necessary avoiding additional costs of calendar based regular marketing and clients cannot simply wait for regular specials as these will only occur ad hoc.
