THE ROLE OF THE

COUNSELOR

Academic Improvement and Planning: Includes the selection of a plan of study, placement into required courses and challenging programs, attendance concerns, and study skills.

Personal/Social Growth: includes counseling concerning self-esteem, developing communication skills, decision-making, and relationship-building skills.

OVERVIEW OF SERVICES

THE ROLE OF THE COUNSELOR

Crisis Intervention Services: includes counseling students in crisis and providing referrals as necessary.

Transition Services: assist students with changes from grade to grade to provide a comfortable and successful learning environment.

Career and Life Planning: increases student awareness of the career and educational planning process, as well as for the individual careers themselves. Instills in students the values and attitudes necessary for becoming a successful contributor to their families and to society.

Requirements

All students, including students with disabilities, must take Regents exams and complete a minimum of 22 units/credits.

There are compensatory safety net options on these exams available to students with disabilities that can be discussed further with your child’s counselor

General education students must earn a 65 or above on the required Regents exams. *4 + 1 Pathways available*

Athletics

Student-athletes must register at the beginning of their junior year with the NCAA Eligibility Center to be eligible to play NCAA Division I or II sports in college.

Athletes playing in Division III do not have to register.

To play Div. I or II sports, the student must:

Complete a certain number of high school core courses.

Earn a certain minimum grade point average in these core courses.

Earn a certain minimum score on the SAT or ACT.

Graduate from high school.

National Standardized Exams

PSAT/NMSQT: Practice SAT which measures critical thinking skills including

critical reading, math, problem solving, and writing.

Designed for students to take in October of their Junior Year.

SAT/ACT: College readiness exams taken in the Spring semester by

Juniors and the Fall as Seniors.

SAT II (Subject Tests): Individual subject area exams taken by students applying to

highly competitive colleges after the completion of an AP course.

The Dignity Act

The Dignity Act is a law that went into effect on July 1, 2012.

The Dignity Act prohibits the harassment (including bullying and cyberbullying) and discrimination of students by students and by school personnel

All students have the right to report harassment of any sort to an adult
