Summer project

I Am A PaintingIntroduction

In this project you are asked to choose a painting

made between 1900 and 1950 and translate it into

a wearable structure or garment which is coloured or

painted in the style of your chosen painting. Between

1900 and 1950 many of the important abstract styles

of painting originated such as Cubism, Futurism and

Surrealism.

Materials & methods

Materials used can include fabrics, strips of wood or

metal, plastics and cardboard. Your structure should

be made in such a way that it can be dismantled,

folded or rolled (like a tent or a kite for example) and

packed in a typical clothes shop carrier bag, which you

could design and make yourself.

Include at least two A2 sheets of drawings and ideas,

which show how you have developed your idea. Your

research should also include work in sketchbook

form. Practice your drawing skills over the summer in

preparation to start work in the autumn term. During

the first term we will be assessing your work, this

summer project will be part of this assessment and

will contribute towards Unit 1 Visual recording in Art

& Design.

This unit looks at your ability to identify and select

primary and other sources for recording purposes, to

recognise the full potential and limitations of materials,

techniques and processes. We will also be assessing

your ability to evaluate the suitability

of the use of these materials for your intended outcome

in the design process. You should consider the process

of exploring and recording through appropriate mark

making skills and be able to analyse and refine

developmental studies to produce outcomes.

The sort of qualities that we are looking for are records

of your research on your chosen painting and its

historical context. We will also be looking for a variety

of ideas being explored and generated visually as well

as the final wearable object.

Take a series of photographs of someone wearing

your design in an appropriate or relevant setting.

Aim to be ambitious, try to be experimental with your

ideas. This completed project and photos should be

brought to universityon your first studio day.

If you are presently resident overseas and this is not

possible, you should bring drawings, photographs,

slides or video with you.

We look forward to seeing you at the start of term.

Funding Further EducationThe Further Education courses such as the UAL AB

Diploma, Extended Diploma, Foundation Diploma and

the LASER Access to HE, do not attract Student Loan

funding. Students are either self funding or supported

by parents or by a combination of both.

There are some additional sources of funding

available for the 2014/15 academic year which are

shown below. Please contact your Campus Student

Advice Manager for information and advice before

you begin your course.

16–19 Bursary Fund

The 16–19 Bursary Fund helps young people who

face the greatest barriers to continuing in education

after the age of 16. To make an application you

must be aged under 19 on 31 August immediately

preceding the start of your course.

Applications from students whose household income

is below £16,191 will be considered a priority but this

does not exclude students from households where

the income exceeds this if a specific financial need

can be demonstrated.

Some young people will automatically be entitled to an

award. The £1,200 Bursary, section to follow, provides

information on this. A means tested assessment will

enable us to award money to other young people

where a clear need for support is evident. Funds will

not simply be awarded because the student has a low

income. The fund is limited and there is no automatic

entitlement to support.

What costs can the 16-19 Bursary Fund help with?

£1,200 bursary

The fund provides a bursary of £1,200 to the most

vulnerable young people. This group includes care

leavers, those personally in receipt of Income Support

(or Universal Credit), and disabled young people

receiving both Employment Support Allowance and

Disability Living Allowance (or Personal Independence

Payment). Students who satisfy these conditions will

receive a £1,200 bursary.

12

Page 13: Welcome [webdocs.ucreative.ac.uk]webdocs.ucreative.ac.uk/Canterbury_Extended... · of painting originated such as Cubism, Futurism and Surrealism. 5 Jean Paul Gaultier Masashi Honda

Course costs

The fund can contribute towards course-related

costs including books, printing, field trips and art

equipment.

Travel

The fund can contribute towards daily travel expenses

to and from UCA. Students attending UCA as the

nearest Further Education institution to their home will

be considered a priority but those who have chosen

UCA over a closer institute will not be excluded.

All applicants must have taken advantage of any

student travel concessions available to them i.e. the

Student Oyster Card, Surrey Half Price bus / train

pass, Kent /Medway train / bus pass. Further details

are available on the travel information sheet.

Other / unforeseen circumstances

The 16–19 Bursary Fund can also help towards

other costs. This could include temporary support

with domestic emergencies or sudden changes

in circumstances, such as redundancy or a drop in

household income.

Help With Childcare Costs

• If you are aged between 16 and 19 and have

childcare responsibilities then you can get help

and support through the Care to Learn

scheme. This can provide help with childcare

costs during your period of study.

• Care to Learn can be accessed at

Living Away From Home

• If you are considering living away from home

to study a Further Education Course, you need

to be sure that you can fund it.

• There is a limited amount of money available

through our specialist residential bursaries

which have generally only been agreed for

students who are studying their preferred

course at the nearest college to them, but

who would have a long distance to travel.

For example, if you lived in Essex and wanted

to study in Kent, you would not be eligible.

However, if there are specific reasons why you

want or need to study at one of our campuses

then applications can be considered on an

individual basis.

towards the costs of your course such as materials,

equipment, travel, accommodation in certain instances

and unforeseen circumstances such as a sudden change

in circumstances. These funds are limited and therefore

awards are means tested. There is no automatic

entitlement.

Course Costs-The fund can help towards the cost of

materials, equipment packs, and field trips.

Travel-The fund can contribute towards daily travel

expenses to and from UCA. Students attending UCA as

the nearest Further Education institution to their home

Adult Learner Support Fund. However, funds are extremely

limited and early application is recommended. It should

be noted that due to limited funds we are generally only

able to make a contribution towards childcare costs.

However, it is important that you consider your own

circumstances and look into all options for paying for

your course before choosing to take out a 24+ Advanced

Learning Loan. This is not the responsibility of UCA. If

you want advice on managing your finances, you can

get impartial advice from the Money Advice Service at

https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk.

Further information is available in a 24+ALL Learner

The Bursary Fund is designed to help vulnerable adult

learners with a specific financial need which could prevent

them from participating in learning. There are specific

priority groups including students with specific learning

difficulties or a disability, and lone parents.

Money will be awarded to learners where a specific

financial need has been identified. The fund is very limited

and there is no automatic entitlement to support.
