Backbone Update

• Closing of ring 4 AEP has to move POP in Huntington WVA, will move turnup out to March 08

• Gigabit portals at POPs with State Columbus, Cleveland and Dayton Turned up

• Baldwin Wallace, Clark State, Lake Erie UNO, Zane State (almost), Washington State are on service

Page 4: Welcome OARtech Participants

Backbone Update

• Current Gateways are running at 61% Average; 80% median

• Total utilization is peaking ~5 Gbps

• Getting additional bandwidth from Level3

• Additional Bandwidth needed for full protection

• Looking at re-aggregating as BGP management is becoming troublesome

Page 5: Welcome OARtech Participants

Backbone Update

• Newnet peering connection spiked on Nov 29 @ 2.2 Gbps

• Additional increases will require additional bandwidth

Page 6: Welcome OARtech Participants

Backbone Update

• Upgrades to backbone are ongoing

• Adding 10 Gbps on several links – Ring 1 will be fully 10 Gig– Ring 0 will be fully 10 Gig

• Adding 2 new Juniper M120 routers– Both are now operational

Page 7: Welcome OARtech Participants

Partners

• Leveraging portals with state

• Current Phase 0 implementation has State connecting to OSCnet routers but at layer 2 only, VLAN and MPLS back haul; ongoing

• Phase 1 operational plans are being worked on

Page 8: Welcome OARtech Participants

New Directions

• Merit interconnect update - Fiber splice date allegedly today 12/12/07

• Will light with 10 GigE

• Will share port with NewNet

Page 9: Welcome OARtech Participants

New Directions

• Pittsburgh connection gear is here

• Youngstown side done

• Still waiting on power resolution on Pitt side

• PSC is moving POP

Page 10: Welcome OARtech Participants

I2 and NLR update

• Same old stuff

Page 11: Welcome OARtech Participants

New Management Tools

• Looking at ADVA for etherjack product

• Includes IEEE 802.3ah, 802.1 ag, and ITU Y.1731

Carrier visibility of customer network

Carrier visibility of carrier network

• NID or NTE required at customer handoff for OAM– Analogous to smartjack, CSU/DSU or NTE for frame relay

• Link OAM (EFM - IEEE 802.3ah) is necessary but not sufficient– Performance monitoring and threshold crossing alarms– Remote failure indication - Dying gasp, link fault & critical event– Remote loopback (Port)

• Services OAM (ITU Y.1731) /Connectivity OAM (CFM IEEE 802.1ag)– SLA Monitoring/Performance monitoring– Continuity verification– Service level loopback– AIS/RDI or fault propagation– Test head to generate test suites (RFC-2544)– Cable integrity test for customer premise

Page 27: Welcome OARtech Participants

Information Sharing

• Three levels of connectivity– Regional– State– National

• Review of Broadband Ohio network

• Exploring National Options: Internet 2/NLR

Page 28: Welcome OARtech Participants

Resource Sharing

• Are the Grantees considering allowing other entities to share access to the broadband network?

– i.e., cities, counties, schools and non-profits

• Are the Grantees considering coherent investments with Broadband Ohio?

Page 29: Welcome OARtech Participants

Financial Considerations

• Post-grant sustainability and continued growth– How will we fund these services post grant?– What are the plans for expansion beyond grant?

• Are Grantees considering joint investments with Broadband Ohio?
