National News­Travel OutlookIn the face of significant international headwinds, the U.S. economycontinues to expand, albeit at an underwhelming pace. On thepositive side, solid employment growth, low energy costs and risingpersonal incomes are buoying the consumer spending, whichaccounted for 68 percent of the U.S. economy last year.  At thesame time, business confidence­reflected in a lack of investmentexpenditures and export demand­remains a concern. For the travel

industry, the recent Travel Trends Index shows that demand,particularly by domestic leisure travelers, is continuing to expand ata reasonably healthy pace, a sentiment that was echoed in a recentreport by the Federal Reserve.  

LABORThe March Labor Department employment report indicated that U.S.unemployment remained at its eight­year low of 4.9 percent inFebruary­and analysis of these figures by economists at the U.S.Travel Association found that the travel industry continued to postjobs records. 

CONSUMER CONFIDENCEThe Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index®, which hadincreased moderately in January, declined in February. The Indexnow stands at 92.2 (1985=100), down from 97.8 in January. 

CONSUMER SPENDINGThe January Travel Price Index (TPI) increased 0.2 percentcompared to December 2015 on a seasonally adjusted basis. 

EXPORTSThe trade deficit took another hit to start the year, expanding to$45.7 billion from $44.7 billion in December, according to theDepartment of Commerce.  

STATE OF BUSINESSA strong durable goods reading should help assuage initial concernsfor the business sector in early 2016. 

TRAVEL TRENDS INDEXOverall growth in the travel sector of the U.S. economy has leveledoff but remains in positive territory, mainly thanks to a leisure travelmarket buoyed by strong wages and low gas prices. 

    According to the February U.S. Travel Barometer, more thanthree­quarters of U.S. residents with near­term travel intent searchedfor travel within the U.S.     Final January lodging reports as reported by STR were mixed.While revenue per available room (RevPAR) increased for the 71stconsecutive month, up 2.4 percent, this was the lowest JanuaryRevPAR growth since 2010.     AIR TRAVELA4A projected spring air travel to rise to record levels during Marchand April this year. Passenger volumes are expected to exceed2015's peak by 3 percent with approximately 140 million passengers(2.3 million per day) expected to fly on U.S. airlines during Marchand April. ROADS & RAILSFederal Highway Administration data showed that travel on all roadsand streets increased 3.5 percent to 3,147.8 billion vehicle miles in2015.      Research from IBISWorld found that the cost of airfare and hotelstays were likely to rise for business travelers in 2016.     U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released its traveland trade numbers for the 2015 fiscal year.     Debating a spring break vacation? Project: Time Off researchshows 61 percent of kids want to spend quality time with parentsduring vacation.
