Moustaches and smiles were in plentiful supply throughout a sunny, perfect day for golf, fellowship and friendly competition at the 2016 Julie Cole Charity Golf Classic. Playing off a fiesta theme for the event, players and volunteers celebrated Julie Cole, who has committed 27 years of giving back to the Findlay community through her sponsorship of this tournament which has raised more than $2.6 million.

Our guest pro, John Cook, supported Julie’s efforts by entertaining folks on the 9th hole, engaging players in a driving contest, acting as an extra team member and signing golf balls for a donation to the cause.

Julie had her own contest for players at the putting green and spent extra time with our two Julie Cole Golf Fund junior players, Lydia Smith and Connor Ohlrich.

Following the energetic and committed lead from Julie Cole herself, our sponsors, volunteers, players, pro, Chad Bain and the Findlay Country Club staff all did what they could to make it an enjoyable and successful day.

This year’s beneficiaries, Bridge Hospice, the Women’s Center of Bluffton Hospital and The First Tee of Hancock County, will be the recipients

of the proceeds raised from our generous Julie Cole sponsors, major sponsor auction attendees and golf team players.

Back by popular demand, a special volunteer thank you and tournament awards reception, sponsored by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, was held following the tournament. Live music provided by Julie’s Findlay High School classmates, the Reunion Band, rocked Findlay Country Club while guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, drinks and shared stories of the day’s golf heroics.

setting the tone for a fun-filled Fiesta! Guests enjoyed lively bidding on over 50 silent and live auction items including stays at 5-star hotels, gas for a year, fine wines, diamond jewelry, gourmet dinners and golf packages. An amazing $83,930 was raised benefitting the Julie Cole charities.

A delicious dinner followed remarks from reception sponsor Mike Needler, Jr. of Great Scot Community Markets, toastmaster Scott Malaney and Julie Cole who expressed her appreciation to the many individuals

and Major Sponsors today and from the past who helped make her dream of a golf tournament to benefit Bridge Hospice and other community charities a reality 27 years ago.

Last October, a 14 foot tall, sparkling, silver tree, The John and Mary DeHaven Healing Tree, located in the John and Mary DeHaven Courtyard of the Virginia B. Gardner Healing Garden at the Armes Family Cancer Care Center, was dedicated. More than 96 leaves were placed on the tree memorializing and honoring loved ones who have battled cancer.

August 23 is the deadline to purchase leaves for the October 4, 2016 ceremony. Leaves may be purchased for a minimum of $500. Donors will receive one laser cut, stainless steel maple leaf to be placed on the tree during the October ceremony and a matching leaf to keep as a personal keepsake..

Purchase Healing Tree Leaves Before August 23 Deadline!

Did You Know BVHS Offers Scholarships?We do, and you can contribute to any of these scholarship funds or start your own!

The Jane Heminger Nursing Scholarship was awarded to Melissa Sherer, $4,500 toward a Master of Nursing degree from Walden University. The following students each received $3,000 toward their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees: Stephanie Koch, the University of Cincinnati; Corrine Heflinger, Eastern Michigan University; Kelsey Finlay, The Ohio State University; Julia Filkins, University of Toledo; and Megan Barchlett, Lourdes University. Kayla Gill received $500 to continue her associate’s degree in nursing at Owens Community College.

A $500 Kathleen Higgins Endowed Scholarship was awarded to Corrine Heflinger. Corrine, a 2012 graduate of Findlay High School, is a nursing student at Eastern Michigan University.

The Karen S. Jones Nursing Certification Scholarship is available to BVHS Bluffton and Findlay campus registered nurses who wish to gain certification. Mindy Myers, a registered nurse at the Blanchard Valley Hospital Emergency Department, received up to $500 for certification materials and testing to become a certified emergency room nurse.

The Kristine Mullen Memorial Scholarship Fund is available to nursing students interested in critical care, advancement in nursing education and/or nurses interested in becoming educators. Jessica Niese, a 2013 Miller City High School graduate, was awarded a $500 scholarship to assist in completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Ohio Northern University.

A $500 Nursing Education Fund scholarship was awarded to Melissa Sherer. Melissa is a registered nurse in the Blanchard Valley Hospital Critical Care Unit. She is pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing.

The Maxine Snyder Endowed Trust Certification and Masters Preparation Scholarship was awarded to Pam Somers, an ostomy nurse in the Blanchard Valley Hospital Intensive Care Unit. She received up to $750 to obtain certification as a wound care specialist.

Julia Filkins, a nursing student at the University of Toledo, was awarded the $500 Sherri Winegardner Endowed Nursing Scholarship. Julia aspires to be a certified registered nurse anesthetist.

The $600 Karis S. (Powell) Woodward, RN, Nursing Scholarship Fund was awarded to Ashley Mathias. Ashley is a 2013 graduate of New Riegel High School.

Stacy Walker is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the University of Toledo. Stacy strives to become an obstetrics nurse in the Special Care Nursery and eventually a health care attorney. Stacy was awarded $500 from the Phyllis Zimber Endowed Scholarship.
