Thank-you for choosing New Beginnings Childbirth Services for your doula certification process. We uphold the highest standards for our students, and hope you find our course one that will help you grow and develop as a doula and childbirth professional. This course was designed to be finished in 9 months, but you have two years to fulfill all the requirements for certification. Requirements are as follows: Read through the coursework given you Finish all assignments and e-mail to [email protected] Finish all readings as they are assigned. You will need to attend as many births as you need to fill in a skills checklist. These will need to be initialed by anyone who was at the birth with you. There is no time limit for the births as long as you fulfill the skills required. After the birth, discuss with the nurse what they did and did not like about your role in the birth. A debriefing form will be provided for you, which will then need to be e-mailed to me. For each birth, write up a care plan on the form which will be provided for you. This should follow the theories of Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs and the Nursing Process. Attend at least three clients that you provide full care for. This includes a pre-natal interview, a meeting with their care provider, and a postpartum interview. You can also check off skills with these births. The course content is as follows:

1. Introduction into labor support2. Introduction into the nursing process, needs assessment and the initial interview 3. Introduction in Maslow's Hierarhcy of needs4. Doula Actions5. The role of hormones6. Stress response7. Pain8. Whole body health during pregnancy9. Normal Physiological Labor10.Common medical interventions and how to help when they are needed11. Childbirth classes12.Communicating with the medical world13.Debriefing14.Being a doula in a business

You may begin to attend births after the third unit. A skills checklist will be e-mailed to you at that time. The skills can be checked off in any setting or birth. You do not have to be a primary doula to check them off. Some of them, you may be able to do with women who are not in labor or not pregnant, but some you will have to be at the birth for.

The objective for this course is to produce doula's who are skilled at providing emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual labor support. They should also finish this course feeling like they know how to communicate with the medical world and how to communicate with their own clients.
