FROM THE PASTOR

“CATHOLIC SCHOOLS: FAITH, EXCELLENCE, SERVICE” As we celebrate “Catholic Schools Week” throughout the diocese, I take the opportunity to thank sincerely the administrators of our two educational programs: Mrs. Trish Costantino (SS. Simon & Jude Early Childhood Center) and Mr. Rob Munz (St. Margaret of Scotland Elementary). They, and the truly dedicated faculty and staff working with each, are to be commended for providing excellent Catholic Education to all of those who have been entrusted to our parish programs. I also thank those in St.

Raphael the Archangel parish who are, in part, helping to financially support these programs. It is evident that our Catholic Schools are most necessary as they assist parents in passing on to their families the practice of the Catholic Faith---the main purpose for the existence of a Catholic School. This Wednesday, February 3 is the memorial of St. Blase, bishop and martyr. The blessing of throats will take place after the Masses at 8:30 & 12:00. Because of the virus circumstance, the blessing will be given over all in attendance without the individual use of blessed candles. The Parish Share program for 2020 is quickly coming to a close. Despite the pandemic and all of the financial uncertainty that we faced in past months, the people of the parish came through “with flying colors”. If you have an outstanding balance on your pledge, please consider completing it as soon as possible. Thanks! The St. Raphael the Archangel Adoration Society is a group of women and men who commit themselves to a half-hour of Eucharistic adoration on the First Friday of each month at Ss. Simon and Jude church. If you are available to fulfill a time slot between 9:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. please contact the parish office, or register online under “Quick Links” on our homepage. Nocturnal adoration also resumes in February at St. Margaret of Scotland Church. See page 4 for more information. No time spent before the Lord in the Eucharist is wasted time!

THE MASS INTENTION BOOK Mass intention requests are now being accepted through Palm Sunday.

Please call Melissa in the parish office.

Please continue to support our parishes with your Parish Share pledges and additional donations.

THE MASS DURING THE PANDEMIC We are still experiencing restricted attendance in each church because of the required social distancing, but we have yet to turn people away. This is why we are using the Sign Up Genius to ensure that we stay within our allotted numbers. Please do not forget to register to attend Mass in person. Click the link on our homepage straphaelcgs.org, or call the office to reserve your space. Family and friends are also welcome to register on your behalf. Do not attend Mass without registering.

Since some may not feel comfortable attending in person, live-streaming from Ss. Simon and Jude Church will continue to be available on our website. (Note: every Mass at Ss. Simon and Jude Church is livestreamed, and one will be repeated throughout the day.) Additionally, those who wish to receive the Eucharist may choose to attend the Mass via the radio. Here’s how it works: park your car near the church doors at Ss. Simon and Jude Church (right side as you enter the lot). Remain in your car and tune to FM frequency 96.3 for the entire audio of the Mass. Communion will be distributed outside to those who “attend” Mass from their cars.

Our Mass times reflect the necessary space needed for the “sanitizing” of pews and door entrances.

We have not had any COVID –19 outbreaks linked to our Mass attendance. Let’s keep it that way! Here’s how:

• Register to attend. • Don’t forget to wear your mask. • Remember that masks are required to cover mouth and nose. • If you are not receiving Communion by hand, but on the tongue,

please wait to receive at the end of the line. • Please maintain social distancing while waiting in line for communion

and only remove your mask briefly, before you reach the priest or deacon, to receive.

• Hand sanitizer is available at the doors of each church. Use it.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation. Let us continue to pray for an end to this pandemic.

THE ORDER OF MASS

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do, (all strike their breast as they say:) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

FIRST READING | DEUTERONOMY 18: 15-20

SECOND READING | 1 CORINTHIANS 7: 32-35

ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

GLORIA

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 95: 1-2, 6-9

Moses spoke to all the people, saying: “A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kin; to him you shall listen. This is exactly what you requested of the LORD, your God, at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let us not again hear the voice of the LORD, our God, nor see this great fire any more, lest we die.’ And the LORD said to me, ‘This was well said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin, and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him.

Whoever will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name, I myself will make him answer for it. But if a prophet presumes to speak in my name an oracle that I have not commanded him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, he shall die.’”

Come, let us ring out our joy to the LORD; hail the rock who saves us. Let us come into his presence, giving thanks; let us hail him with a song of praise.

O come; let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us, for he is our God and we the people who belong to his pasture, the flock that is led by his hand.

O that today you would listen to his voice! “Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the desert when your forebears put me to the test; when they tried me, though they saw my work.”

Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and he is divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other hand,

is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord without distraction.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow at the following bolder words) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE ORDER OF MASS

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | MATTHEW 4: 16

GOSPEL | MARK 1: 21-28 The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light; on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen.

Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

ARING IVING ERVING

ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

THANK YOU FAITHFUL SERVANTS, AND MORE NEEDED!! A giant thank you to 2 Ministers of Hospitality from St. Margaret of Scotland Church who faithfully served at the 10:00 a.m. Mass for many years. They are Bill Feldbauer and Mike Steinkirschner. They have recently moved to northern PA and their smiling faces will be sorely missed. We thank them for their service and now need to fill their spots. If you feel called to assist in this position, please contact Rich Canello at [email protected] and call Karen Maurer at 412-857-5356 for Safe Environment information.

LOOKING FOR AN EMAIL?

Our new parish brings new email addresses for the parish staff. Please see page 20, or visit our website, for the complete listing. With new email addresses sending you information, some parishioners may have difficulty in receiving an email from a staff member. Your computer, phone, or tablet may not recognize the new address and sort the email into the junk or spam folder. Please be sure to check all folders if you are expecting an email. If you want to receive notifications from us by email and/or text, just text the word: StRaphaelCGS to 84576, or go to flocknote.com and search by zip code 15220.

Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties. -1 Corinthians 7: 32 The formation of our new parish, St. Raphael the Archangel, is an occasion for great joy and hope

for a strong future of the faith community in Carnegie, Greentree, and Scott Township. With the merger, however, it is normal to have a period of grief over the loss of our

former parishes. Although it is exciting to be part of something new, change also brings some anxiety. Whatever we are feeling demonstrates how connection to a

parish evokes strong human emotions. These feelings are related to familiarity, comfort, and the memorable occasions of receiving sacraments. It is natural to grieve the loss of an entity we loved, contributed to, and in which we worshiped God, made friends, and carried out charity and service. The importance of the local parish to the life of the universal church cannot be doubted. The Catechism of the Catholic Church identifies the significance of a parish as the place where people gather to celebrate the Eucharist; are initiated into the Christian faithful; are taught the message of the Gospel; and manifest works of charity (2179). In Christifidelis Laici, Pope Saint John Paul II stated that the local parish is the “most immediate and visible expression” of the universal Church (26). He further stated that because the parish is the place where a community gathers to celebrate the Eucharist, it is the conduit of communion in the Catholic Church for its members (Christifidelis Laici, 26). According to Sacrosanctum Concilium, the

gathering of believers for Sunday Liturgy and “sense of community” in local parishes are representative of the communion of the whole Church in the

world (51). We all have an opportunity to embrace our membership in our new Parish of St.

Raphael the Archangel. To be sure, all of the critical aspects of a parish described above will take place in our new, larger parish. It will take time to feel like one

community, and the fact that our parish was born during the era of social distancing complicates matters. Over time, we will be able to have social, spiritual, and

educational gatherings in addition to our masses. We are blessed with three unique campuses and will offer events and activities at all of them, taking into consideration the most optimal settings for specific programs. Most importantly, we have wonderful people throughout our parish, and the sacramental presence of our Lord! St. Raphael the Archangel, Pray for us!

This February 7-14, 2021, we will celebrate National Marriage Week! This annual observance is a great prompt for everyone to reflect on the gift marriage is to our Church and our country, as well as an opportunity for couples to build up their own marriages.

Franciscan Sisters, TOR LENTEN RETREAT 2021

The Franciscan Sisters, TOR are excited to invite you to our annual Lenten Retreat, held virtually on Saturday, March 27th. Our theme is Into Your Hands, Father, focusing on trust and abandonment to our Heavenly Father, seen in the life of Jesus and our own lives! The retreat will offer talks, testimonies, music, meditations, and optional small groups led by a sister.

Our sisters will also share short video reflections during Lent, leading up to the retreat, on our Facebook page and Youtube channel, and offer weekly share groups. If you’d like to participate, register on our website by Sunday, February 14.

More information about the Lenten Retreat can be found on our webpage www.franciscansisterstor.org, under Events. Registration for both the small groups and the retreat itself will also be found at that link. There is no fee to register, but registration is required by Wednesday, March 24th for the retreat itself. If you are a part of a parish group, Bible study group, or prayer group, and would like your group to participate, contact Sr. Anna Rose at (740) 544-5542 x135. Individuals and groups of family and friends are also welcome!

MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING in a Virtual Setting

Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance is the recognized leader in Pennsylvania for mandated reporter training; they train thousands of mandated reporters each year. PFSA has been supporting mandated reporters for more than 20 years. They developed the first state-approved curriculum to train mandated reporters in how to recognize and report child abuse; they also have developed training on child neglect and how to respond if a child discloses abuse. PFSA’s curriculum is approved by the Department of Human Services, Education and State and meets all requirements for mandated reporters to receive training in recognizing and reporting child abuse (including ACT 126). Certificates are provided to each participant upon completion of the training and (upon request) we will upload confirmation of your training to the Department of State or Education for CE fulfillment under ACT 31 and/or ACT 48. If you volunteer or work in the parish, there is a chance that you must complete this training.

ST. MARGARET OF SCOTLAND SCHOOL

CLASSROOM CHRONICLES Each week we will highlight the amazing things that are going on in our classrooms here at St. Margaret of Scotland School.

MISS LINDA GERRITY – 2ND GRADE It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the school year. Time certainly flies by in second grade as the students work hard and at the same time have fun learning. God continues to guide us through the school year with faith, hope, and love as we continue to follow our theme for the school year: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jerimiah 29:11 The second grade has been busy during the second quarter of school. They could not go the Carnegie Science Center for a field trip, so we brought the Science Center to school. The second grade, along with the third grade, enjoyed a virtual field trip that included a STEM-by-the-Hour presentation titled: Engineering – Build It, Break It. The students had an hour virtual presentation & were provided with a kit from the Science Center to create sculptures, build arches, and assemble other unique structures. They had a great time! The second quarter brought the start of cursive writing for second grade. They are practicing their cursive strokes and enjoying learning all the cursive letters. The solar system was a popular topic in science class. The students created clay models of the planets and they were out of this world! The second grade learned and practiced their addition and subtraction regrouping skills in math class. Art continues to be a favorite class for second grade. They enjoy painting on canvas boards and the classroom windows. Drive by the school and check out our winter wonderland of snowmen and penguins. Second grade continues to expand their horizons academically but most importantly they are growing in their faith. They are preparing for their First Reconciliation and have learned their Act of Contrition, how to make an examination of conscience, and the process on how to go to Reconciliation. Please keep these little disciples of Jesus in prayer as they continue to prepare for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
