PRAYER & WORSHIP

Please pray for the souls of the faithful departed.

“Try to gather together more frequently to give thanks to God and to

praise him. For when you come together frequently, Satan’s powers

are undermined, and the destruction that he threatens is done away

with in the unanimity of your faith. Nothing is better than peace, in

which all warfare between heaven and earth is brought to an end.” St. Ignatius of Antioch As we begin to return to some sense of “normalcy” with regard to services and

ceremonies, I would like to revive the “First Friday” exposition and benediction of the Holy Eucharist. I need to know that there would be “adorers” committed to at least ½ hour in the presence of the Lord. For the time being (until we

revise the schedule after the COVID circumstances relax) the devotion will take place at the Ss Simon and Jude church. Exposition would begin at 9:00 and continue until 11:30 a.m. at which time benediction would take place. Adorers would be needed for each 1/2 hour slot during that time span. Please

use the special Sign Up Genius marked “First Friday Adoration” under the “Quick Links” section on our website, or call the office and indicate your name and what time slot(s) for which you will take responsibility.

THE MASS DURING THE PANDEMIC We are still experiencing restricted attendance in each church because of the required social distancing, but we have yet to turn people away. This is why we are using the Sign Up Genius to ensure that we stay within our allotted numbers. Please do not forget to register to attend Mass in person. Click the link on our homepage straphaelcgs.org, or call the office to reserve your space. Family and friends are also welcome to register on your behalf. Do not attend Mass without registering.

Since some may not feel comfortable attending in person, live-streaming from Ss. Simon and Jude Church will continue to be available on our website. (Note: every Mass at Ss. Simon and Jude Church is livestreamed, and one will be repeated throughout the day.) Additionally, those who wish to receive the Eucharist may choose to attend the Mass via the radio. Here’s how it works: park your car near the church doors at Ss. Simon and Jude Church (right side as you enter the lot). Remain in your car and tune to FM frequency 96.3 for the entire audio of the Mass. Communion will be distributed outside to those who “attend” Mass from their cars.

Our Mass times reflect the necessary space needed for the “sanitizing” of pews and door entrances.

We have not had any COVID –19 outbreaks linked to our Mass attendance. Let’s keep it that way! Here’s how:

• Register to attend. • Don’t forget to wear your mask. • Remember that masks are required to cover mouth and nose. • If you are not receiving Communion by hand, but on the tongue,

please wait to receive at the end of the line. • Please maintain social distancing while waiting in line for communion

and only remove your mask briefly, before you reach the priest or deacon, to receive.

• Hand sanitizer is available at the doors of each church. Use it.

THE MASS INTENTION BOOK Mass intention requests are now being accepted through Palm Sunday.

Please call Melissa in the parish office.

IMPORTANT FINANCIAL INFO

1. NEW PARISH ENVELOPES: Our new parish has one set of envelopes for all three churches. Parishioners should have received these. Inevitably, there will be a few issues with the transition, and we ask for your patience as we sort things out. 2. OFFERTORY REPORTS FOR THE 2020 TAX YEAR: Parishioners wishing to receive a 2020 Contribution Summary must request them by JANUARY 31, 2021. Our three church databases are being merged into one and the old databases will be archived at the end of January. Contact Melissa. ([email protected] or 412-857-5356 option 1 under Staff Directory). Those who contributed online from SSJ and SMOS must call Our Sunday Visitor for the 2020 report: 800-348-2886 . THE ORDER OF MASS

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do, (all strike their breast as they say:) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

FIRST READING | JONAH 3: 1-5, 10

SECOND READING | 1 CORINTHIANS 7: 29-31

THE ORDER OF MASS

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying: “Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you.” So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD’s bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing,

“Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed, “ when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 25: 4-9

O LORD, make me know your ways. Teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth, and teach me; for you are the God of my salvation.

Remember your compassion, O LORD, and your merciful love, for they are from of old. In your merciful love remember me, because of your goodness, O LORD.

Good and upright is the LORD; he shows the way to sinners. He guides the humble in right judgment; to the humble he teaches his way.

Text: Psalm 25: The Revised Grail Psalms © 2010 GIA Publications, Inc Tune: Michel Guimont © 1994, GIA Publications, Inc.

I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing,

those buying as not owning, those using the world as not using it fully. For the world in its present form is passing away.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | MARK 1:15

The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel.

GOSPEL | MARK 1: 14-20 After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow at the following bolder words) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE ORDER OF MASS

OFFERTORY HYMN | TWO FISHERMEN 1. Two fishermen, who lived along the Sea of Galilee, stood by the shore to cast their nets into an ageless sea.

Now Jesus watched them from afar then called them each by name; it changed their lives, these simple men; they'd never be the same.

2. And as he walked along the shore 'twas James and John he'd find, and these two sons of Zebedee would leave their boats behind. Their work and all they held so dear they left beside their nets. Their names they'd heard as Jesus called; they came without regret.

3. O Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John beloved one, you heard Christ's call to speak good news revealed to God's own Son. Susanna, Mary Magdalene who traveled with your Lord, you ministered to him with joy for he is God adored.

4. And you, good Christians, one and all who'd follow Jesus' way, come leave behind what keeps you bound to trappings of our day, and listen as he calls your name to come and follow near, for still he speaks in varied ways to those his call will hear.

The Creed

Our Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel is presenting a monthly Livestreamed and Zoom event hosted by Fr. Alek Schrenk. Join us on the First Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. for “Wine, Cheese, and The Creed.” Fr. Alek will be our guide on a year-long journey into a deeper understanding of the prayer by which we profess twelve basic tenets of our Catholic faith, the Apostles’ Creed. What a great way to renew our faith as we launch our new parish! If you missed our first session in which Fr. Alek introduces the Creed and explores the article, “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,” you can access it several ways. Go to the quick link (Fr. Alek’s Wine, Cheese, and the Creed) on our parish website or by

clicking the link under “Our Ministries.” Session One is also available on YouTube (The Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel; Wine, Cheese, and the Creed). Mark your calendars for February 4 at 7:00 p.m., when the topic will be

“…and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.” When you attend live, you will be able to join in the question and answer portion of the program. All are welcome to tune in!

ARING IVING ERVING

Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you. Amen.

-St. Thomas Aquinas, Priest and Doctor of the Church

During this third week of Ordinary Time, we celebrate the Feasts of two of our extraordinary saints. St. Paul was a person of action and St. Thomas Aquinas a person of contemplation, but both had a major impact on growing and forming the Body of Christ, our Catholic Church. The Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle on Monday, 1/25 recognizes the event recorded in Chapter 9 of the Acts of the Apostles when Saul, a persecutor of Christians, was literally blinded by the light of Jesus Christ. He then received his sight and the Holy Spirit. Paul endured severe persecution and misfortune to travel and preach the Gospel throughout the known world of his time. Fourteen letters traditionally ascribed to St. Paul are included in the New Testament. St. Thomas Aquinas was born into a wealthy family in 1224 and disappointed his mother by joining the poor order of Dominicans. Thomas was nicknamed, “the Dumb Ox” by his seminary classmates because he was very overweight and quiet. He found his voice in his studies of philosophy and theology. Thomas incorporated the philosophy of Aristotle into Christian theology engaging a systematic approach to exploring natural and supernatural truths. His most well-known work is The Summa Theologica. Although exceptional people and unusual times attract our attention, the day to day lives and work of average people are elevated when offered with the goal of serving God and others and making the world grow closer to the Kingdom preached by Jesus. St. Paul and St. Thomas Aquinas can inspire us by their perseverance and the ways in which they were able to use their unique gifts, in cooperation with the Holy Spirit, to lead others to Jesus Christ.

Our typical services to the poor include assistance with basic expenses related to shelter, utilities, furniture, and food.

During the past year we provided: rent assistance to 45 families utilities for 30 families furniture for 17 families and approximately 130 families per month

received food and household products from our food pantries at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Ss. Simon and Jude.

MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING in a Virtual Setting

Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance is the recognized leader in Pennsylvania for mandated reporter training; they train thousands of mandated reporters each year. PFSA has been supporting mandated reporters for more than 20 years. They developed the first state-approved curriculum to train mandated reporters in how to recognize and report child abuse; they also have developed training on child neglect and how to respond if a child discloses abuse. PFSA’s curriculum is approved by the Department of Human Services, Education and State and meets all requirements for mandated reporters to receive training in recognizing and reporting child abuse (including ACT 126). Certificates are provided to each participant upon completion of the training and (upon request) we will upload confirmation of your training to the Department of State or Education for CE fulfillment under ACT 31 and/or ACT 48. If you volunteer or work in the parish, there is a chance that you must complete this training.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A DEACON?

There are three degrees of ordained ministers or clergy in the Church: bishops, priests, and deacons. Like priests, deacons receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders but instead of the ministerial priesthood, they are ordained to a ministry of service.

Deacons can be divided into two categories: permanent and transitional. All three deacons assigned to our parish are permanent deacons, meaning that the intention has been for us to be deacons, even in heaven. Transitional deacons are men on the path to priesthood. A great example is seminarian Joe Uzar from our parish who became a transitional deacon in June and is expected to be ordained a priest this year. A necessary step to priesthood, every priest is a deacon before becoming a priest.

WHAT DO DEACONS DO? It’s more helpful to start with who they identify with in order to really understand what deacons do. Our priests are configured to identify with Jesus the Priest in a very particular way. When he celebrates Mass, the priest-celebrant stands “in personal Christi capitis” meaning in the person of Christ the Head (Presbyterorum Ordinis). Instead, the deacon is called to identify with Jesus the Servant. This is reflected in the parts of the Mass that ordinarily belong to the deacon: the Kyrie (Lord have mercy), the Gospel, the Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful), and dismissal. He also has a special connection to the chalice- often it is the deacon who prepares the chalice, elevates the chalice, and would distribute Holy Communion from a chalice. This is because he enjoys a special connection to the suffering: the poor, the stranger, and those in need. So the deacon’s

ministry or duties flow directly from this special identification with Jesus the Servant.

But to answer the question, Sacrum Diaconatus Ordinem says that deacons have the responsibility to assist the bishops and priests during liturgy and ritual. They administer baptism, reserve and distribute the Eucharist, bless marriages and lead funerals, and assist with duties of charity and administration. By law, deacons have faculties to preach (give the homily) with the presumed consent of the pastor or celebrant (Canon 764). But deacons cannot do anything that is the responsibility of the ministerial priesthood such as celebrate Mass, hear confession, or anoint the sick.

ARE ALL DEACONS MARRIED? Most of the deacons in Pittsburgh happen to be married, but there are single men who become deacons, too. In our parish, all three deacons are married and have children. Deacon Jim’s and Deacon Kevin’s children are

all adults while my children are all school-age. Once ordained, a deacon cannot marry or remarry if his wife predeceases him (Canon 1087). There is narrow criteria for an exception, but the Holy See has not granted any dispensations for this in recent years. Instead, a widowed deacon is asked to embrace clerical celibacy just as an unmarried deacon would.

CAN A DEACON BECOME A PRIEST IF HIS WIFE DIES? Technically yes, but it isn’t as easy as the question implies. First and foremost, this would require discernment. The deacon would have to discern (with the help of the Church) if God were calling him to the priesthood. His family life, professional, and personal situation would all have to be considered. Because this would be such a special undertaking, the bishop would have to consult with the Holy See before considering the advancement of a permanent deacon to the priesthood.

HOW ARE DEACONS ASSIGNED TO THE PARISH? At ordination, a deacon becomes a cleric and is incardinated into the clergy of the diocese (Canon 266), thus he ceases being a parishioner. His ecclesial assignment is determined by the diocesan bishop. The pastor (or equivalent if not at parish) then prescribes the specific duties/ministries of the deacon within the assignment unless the bishop has determined otherwise.

All three of our deacons were assigned to their home parish, but this is not always the case. In my ordination class, almost half of the new deacons were assigned away from where they were parishioners. The deacon’s family life, secular work, and

THE TOP 10 QUESTIONS ABOUT DEACONS Since I became a deacon, I’ve enjoyed plenty of good conversation while being asked questions about being a deacon. Here’s many of the questions that I’m often asked.

An inside look at the Diaconate by Deacon Paul Lim

Paul and Elizabeth Lim and their 4 children.

Page 15: Welcome! [d2y1pz2y630308.cloudfront.net]Jan 24, 2021  · Rob Super Rose Talmonti Allen Turske Stephanie Vail Mary Kay Walsh James Walther John Zajicek Kathy Zajicek Ralph Zeto and

availability for ministry are considered before the ecclesial assignment is made, but we serve where the bishop assigns.

ARE DEACONS PAID BY THE CHURCH? The expectation in the United States is that permanent deacons are not to be financially dependent on the Church. Most deacons maintain secular employment or rely on other means outside of the church for income. There are deacons that do hold full-time or part-time paid positions for a church entity, many after retiring from their secular jobs or professions. Unlike priests who normally live in rectories or similar settings, deacons manage their own housing arrangements. All of our parish deacons live with their spouses (and children that live at home). As married deacons, the expectation is that we care for our families first and tend to our profession/employment before our ecclesial responsibilities.

DO DEACONS WEAR THE SAME VESTMENTS AS PRIESTS? The vestments for the deacon look similar to the priest, but there are noticeable distinctions. Both wear a stole which symbolizes the cleric’s office: the priest wears his stole over both shoulders similar to an untied scarf; the deacon wears his stole over one shoulder (left) and it connects below the right hip so it looks more like a sash. The outer vestment for the priest is the chasuble; for the deacon it is a dalmatic. The biggest difference between the two vestments is that the

dalmatic has sleeves. A cope may be worn over the stole by both priests and deacons in liturgies/rituals outside of Mass such as Eucharistic adoration, baptisms, weddings, etc.

WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO CALL YOU? I wonder about this myself sometimes. A lot of people between Masses call me “Father” either out of habit from seeing priests or because they don’t realize that I’m not a priest. The Congregation for Clergy has said that the appropriate title for permanent deacons is simply “Deacon.” Like priests, doctors, or anyone who leads with a title, deacons have their own individual preferences for formality. Some deacons prefer the use of their title- others don’t. A few prefer their surname with the title, most use their first name.

I was a parishioner at SMOS for almost twenty years before ordination, so many people know me by my first name. People from my secular employment call me Paul and so do the other parents from my kids’ school district. I still tend to refer to Deacon Kevin and Deacon Jim by their titles out of habit and respect for them from my time in formation. I have become fond of the general address “holy deacon” because it’s a little traditional and reminds me of the vocation I have, but I wouldn’t ask anyone to refer to me that way. Deacon Paul is fine. Paul is fine, too, especially if we know each other well.

HOW DO YOU BECOME A DEACON? Our Diocese has a comprehensive formation program for men who are discerning a vocation to the diaconate. The process begins with an inquiry with the Diaconate Office and the application takes about a year to complete including gathering sacramental records, writing a spiritual autobiography, a psychological exam, and meeting with various formative personnel.

The Formation Program begins with the Propaedeutic Period or an aspirancy phase, where the aspirant becomes more familiar with the

Church, the diaconate, and formal discernment. After this year, and if he is ready, he becomes a Candidate for Holy Orders through the Rite of Candidacy. He will then study sacred theology while continuing to grow in human formation, spiritual formation, and pastoral formation for the next four years. He will also be instituted in the Ministry of Lector and then Acolyte by the bishop as he moves closer to Holy Orders and passes through various stages of evaluation. The standard formation program is 5 years, however not all men advance through the program at the same rate and in the same way.

HOW DO I LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DIACONATE? Have a conversation with me or one of the other deacons. The Diocese’s Office for the Diaconate has a very helpful website: https://diopitt.org/permanent-diaconate. You can also read the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Deacon Paul Lim was ordained on June 13, 2020. He is the youngest permanent deacon in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

In Science, the students are learning about ecosystems and will be preparing to do a project on an ecosystem of their choice. During Social Studies, the students are studying the various Native American groups that were the first settlers of the United States. The third graders are enjoying learning and are excited about the second half of the school year!

STAFF SPOTLIGHTS This week we will spotlight one of our outstanding staff members here at St. Margaret of Scotland School.

MRS. KAREN MILKOWSKI – SCHOOL SECRETARY

I am the Secretary at St. Margaret of Scotland School. I have been here since the summer of 2017. Before coming here, I was the Secretary at St. Raphael Elementary School in Morningside. I have been working in an office in some capacity for 32 years. Some of my duties at St. Margaret include maintaining student information in the Option C database, sending out communication through the Parent Alert system, managing tuition accounts in Smart Tuition, processing other payments, and helping to design and layout the yearbook. I answer the phone and door and conduct new family tours when needed. I am also a stand in for the nurse on days when she is not in the building. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood. I have been married to my husband Dave for 34 years. We have one son, Zach, who is a junior at Pitt Greensburg. We live in Shaler Township with our new cat Lulu, who we just adopted this week. My husband and I are huge Pitt Panther football fans and enjoy going to their games. I also love the beach and ocean and look forward to retiring there someday.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

It was a normal day by all accounts, but John just wasn’t feeling himself. He was a little lightheaded and out of sorts. Later in the afternoon, he experienced a sharp pain in his chest and arm. Quick thinking and action brought John to the emergency department with a diagnosis of a significant heart attack. Surviving this ordeal, he found himself face to face with his cardiologist, having an honest conversation about things that needed to change. “I came close to death,” John found himself thinking. Then came the remorse. He was a young man with a loving wife and children who were very close to facing life without him. John found himself with intense sorrow for living an unchecked and self-indulgent life that almost brought him to his demise. He wanted to change.

We all have our wake-up calls. We have experiences and encounters that force us to really think twice about choices we have made and directions we have taken. Often, we find ourselves looking at those we have hurt square in the eye and wallowing in our foolishness. We regrettably realize that we have allowed our needs to lure us into making some cruel mistakes. We impulsively say things and flippantly do things that reveal our unredeemed and unhealed self. It is a self we stumble over and try to tame but can’t quite seem to master and control. Help!

We spin our wheels, naively thinking that we will somehow, perhaps through persistence, get ourselves unstuck. But, we don’t. We just get out of the car, feeling very helpless, and ignorantly look at the mess we got ourselves into. Did we ever think to ask someone for help? Or, taken the advice of One who is wiser and avoid this route altogether? “Come after me,” are words that Jesus says to all of us. In order to heed his invitation, we must leave our ego-self behind and follow.

When we really see and understand the freedom, peace, justice, and love he offers, we find ourselves with such sorrow in our hearts for how foolish and silly we have been. All the misguided choices and sinful actions come full view and we see how risky our random impassioned behaviors really have been. Repentance is beautiful. When done with a sincere and contrite heart, it directs us to the glory that can be ours, ignites us with the challenge of living a life in service of others, and reminds us that all is well.
